Desperate... Please Help!!
« on: August 03, 2007, 08:57:09 am »
Hi Everyone,

I have a set of twins that are almost 6mo.  My little girl, Holly, sleeps through the night (no matter what kind of day naps she's had), but her brother, Thomas, doesn't.  About 1month ago I weaned him off the paci, as it had become a prop. The weaning went fairly well and continued so for about 2 weeks.  Then my DH and I went away to a wedding for 2 nights, leaving the kids with our au-pair and my mother and everything went pear-shaped.  He started to wake and stayed awake for 2hrs during the night.  Our au-pair is great and was trying to ssh/pat him back to sleep but without success.  Then when we returned, I foolishly went to stay with my parents and he started to wake 5-6 times a night.  I returned home a day early (1 week ago) and have since been trying to re-train him back to sleep.  The 1st 4 nights he was waking 3-5 times/night.  Then 3 nights ago he only woke once and i thought I was getting somewhere.  Unfortunately, the last 2 nights have been a disaster and he's woken and stayed awake for 2hrs approx.

When he wakes, he does a mantra cry that could go on for about 10-20 mins this then develops into a proper cry, which is when I go to him.  Initially I try to sshh/pat him, which sometimes settles him but he won't fall asleep and always starts crying again, this develops into a full blown wail.  I then try PU/PD which drives him mad, and to be honest is beginning to wear me down. He eventually falls asleep but I think he's more exhausted from crying than any thing else.

Both babies are still in,our room as we have a bit of a space issue and I don't think this is helping.

  His routine is as follows:
06.30-7 Awake and btl followed by b/fast
  07.30-08.30 A
08.30-10.00 S Usually he settles himself once I've got him to his cot before he gets ovetired.
Sometimes he'll sleep for 1 1/2 hrs, but a lot of the time he'll wake after 45mins requiring a ssh/pat
back to sleep.  Other times he wont settle at all.
  10.30-11.00 E btl and spoonfeed
  11.30-12.30 A
  12.30-2/2.30 S (can be 11/2hrs usually)
  2.30-3 E btl
4.30-5.30 cat nap (never longer than 1/2hr in buggy/car)
  5.30-6 E btl and spoonfeed
  6-7 - Bath, massage
7-7.30 Bed(sometimes self settles, but usually needs ssh/pat or just a hand on his back
  10-10.30 DF

Please, please can somebody help me as I 'm losing my resilience to persevere with all this and have even thought of trying the paci again at night.

Look fgorward to hearing from you,
  Maggie(aka Goose).

P.S As I speak he's waking from his first day nap after 45mins, you can set your watch by him!!

Usually when they wake 45mins into a nap, thats an indication that they need more A time. Do you think he would be ready for a longer stretch between naps? Something like this:

6:30 - wakes
9-10.30 - morning nap
1-2.30 - afternoon nap
5-5.30 - catnap
7/7.30 - bedtime

When did you introduce solids? What is he having at the moment? Could he be waking from the uncomfort of solids (if too much too early they can't handle yet). Do you think he might be teething?
