should i forget 2nd nap??? :-((
« on: August 27, 2007, 16:03:31 pm »
Hi,

My DD, 11mo has decided not to have her afternoon nap.  i have read the BW book and it says that it will take few week and it will get back to normal.
my question is, should i do anything to encourage her to sleep? i just put her in bed, and she stands, plays, whines, talks to herself. when i did the PD, she just thought it was a game and laughed through... :D she doesn't seem tired until the evening.

her schedule is:

0730 wake up+ BF
0830 Breakfast
0930 - 1100 sleep
1230is lunch
1400 bottle used to go to sleep for 1.5hrs - not happening for 3 weeks
1730 - dinner
1830 bath
1900 - BF and bed.

the problem is when she doesn't sleep enough, her sleep at night is bad!! she wakes up too many times for no apparent reason.

please give me some advise.

many thanks,

Ella's mum.

Have you tried limiting the AM nap? sasha at that age was 1hr in the AM,1.5hr in the PM.if she misses her PM nap then you need to do an earlier bedtime than 7 as she is probably overtired by then which is causing the nightwakings.

Eeek! Be very VERY careful just giving up on her pm nap, especially when her am nap is so early. You will end up with a very overtired little monkey and it's a bloomin nightmare to get back from that state (I think it took us 8 weeks in total  :P ) IF you're having EW and NW then you might be a little way down that road already

You need to have a look at the 2-1 transition thread - there's lots of us on there trying to get through this particularly sticky phase and lots of different experiences about what works and what doesn't. It's at:
https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=98011.0

Unfortunately the BW book makes it all sounds very straightforward, when for a lot of people it just isn't like that.
Basically there are two routes you can take:
1) Try and shift the am nap by 15 minutes every 3 or 4 days til you get it closer to midday whilst doing a VERY early bedtime (like 5pm) to avoid getting OT.
2) Limit the am nap by waking your LO up after an hour to see if you can get a pm nap happening again. If not, then try waking at 45 mins, or even 30 mins.

I think the second option is your best one as even with a very early bedtime, that's a very long A time between nap and bed and OT is a very likely consequence.

There's loads more info on the 2-1 thread and I think there's a really useful post in the FAQ too.

Good luck!

I'm not debating the good advice above ;D but i'd try limiting the AM nap before deciding to go down the 2-1 route. :-*
