Protein Bars
« on: September 18, 2007, 14:07:26 pm »
Forgive me if this is a stupid question...

My LO eats a fairly varied and healthy diet, but has never been a big meat eater and we really haven't managed to move past sausages, sometimes mince and sometimes sliced chicken or ham, but maybe only 2 - 4 times a week. Most recommendations I see is to give them about 1/2 oz most days per week. She will also eat scrambled eggs which we have 1 - 2 times a week.

I am not overly concerned about her protein intake (although I think it may be a *little* light), as she does like her milk and will drink a lot of it, even after filling up on decent sized meals. She is growing well and has no issues with energy (apart from when she is ill / teething). She is 75th percentile height and weight, so in proportion, and she certainly feels very strong!

So, my question - is it OK to give LO's protein bars as an occasional 'treat'. I have never eaten a protein bar, but they do look sort of yummy in the health food shop, but, of course I could be completely wrong! I am not talking about giving her a whole one, but maybe having a bite from one that I might have.

I do have a book at home on optimal nutrition, so I could look this up, but I wondered if any of you genius mummies would know / have ever tried this?

I am based in the UK, so if there are any other things I could get (runny tofu or something?) instead, can anyone tell me where to buy / what to buy? We have Asda and Tesco nearby.

TIA

If she likes milk, why not make her a smoothie with silken tofu, milk and frozen berried in a blender?  This way she gets a nice "treat" without anything suspect that may be hiding in a protein bar.  I know that Hunter LOVES smoothies and will drink them rather than his normal juice / milk.  Give it a try, don't know proportions though, so just try it by feel.

I would stay away from Protein Bars for now.  Maybe you could hide some cheese in her scrambled eggs?

Smoothies are also a great idea.

You can also buy firm tofu and cut it up for her to eat as finger foods.

I think beans are a good source of protein too!

 :) :)

HTH!

Thanks - where do I get firm tofu and silken tofu? (sorry, not very up on these things!!) Are they both in the chilled sections in the supermarkets? Any brand you can recommend?

I know they have smoothies at nursery from time to time, so a smoothy might work really well.

I have tried cheese in her scrambled egg, but she is quite particular about cheese, so it hasn't worked too well. I will try again.

Also, I forgot she likes beans (well, baked beans from a tin  ::) ) - any easy at home bean recipes to try?

Now that I think of it, she is probably fine!! LOL.

Thanks again

Frances,

I'm sure your lo is fine too!!

You can find tofu in any Asian mart and also any refrigerated section of most grocery stores.  Some kids love it, some hate it.  It has a consistency that not all are crazy about.

If the cheese in her eggs is melted... does she notice?

GOOD LUCK!  :)

How about trying her with chilli?  Hunter loves the stuff, though we don't have it often enough for my liking  :D, and he's weird and loves spicy food like DH ... so it's no issue.  I'll call my mom and get a home made recipe for baked beans if you want.

DS is much like your lo, loves fruits, veggies and grains but not so hot on meats.  He will eat the odd scrambled egg, likes chicken meatballs and hotdogs (I buy a special kids brand of hot dog with way less fillers and sodium than regular ones).  He will eat some meat (ie chicken) with his meals but it is usually the last thing he goes for.  He does like cheese, though.
Does your lo like broccoli or mashed potatoes?  I usually thrown in some grated cheese into either when it is really hot and it is easily disguised if that is a worry.  I used to give DS broccoli mashed up with the cheese though I don't do that now since he enjoys cheese on his own and likes eating big chunks of broccoli now.
Another alternative is to buy some of the "veggie meat substitute" products - you can buy lunch meat, patties, sausages, hot dogs, nuggets, etc. etc. that come from veggie and tofu sources that taste really good and not too different from the regular stuff.  Just be sure to check the package for the sodium content.
As for protein bars, I tend to shy away from them - there are a lot of things in there our los don't need right now....

Thanks everyone - I don't know if we have any Asian stores around here, but I will look in the supermarket next time I am in there.

Katie is not keen on potato in any format, but she does like brocolli, so I will try that with cheese on it. When she has had cheese melted in scrambled eggse before, she has noticed it, and just keeps repeating ' I don't like it mummy' (her verbal skills are pretty good now). Maybe I put too much cheese in...

I tried a kind of vegesausage thing you make up but she wasn't too keen onit - I guess I just have to try some other kinds. I like Quorn a lot, so maybe she would like that (actually, she *has* tried some Quorn mince, and it went down well enough).

Thanks again - it's good to get ideas and remind yourself of things to try or re-try - I get stuck in a rut every so often and can't quite remember how I got there!

Beth - if you could get the recipe for home made baked beans, that would be great! I know my DH would like to try these out too (he does most of the actual cooking - lucky me!).

My DD is milk intolerant so I always worry about her protein as she tends to live on fresh air so I add rice protein to her rice milk, it looks brown but is tastless and we also add it to breads we make and I put a bit in veggie sauces and other dishes if she has been off protein foods. I have also seen protein pasta that I thought I might try, it is wholewheat which is what she eats anyway and you can get it in the health food shops  :)

My ds is also not much of a meat eater.  He loves chick peas (garbonzo beans) though. They work if you're looking for finger foods. We add them into everything, pasta rice etc.

Here is a web site for a pasta with super high protein.  I haven't tried it yet, but plan on it soon. I know it's hard to find here (only found it in one place) but maybe you'll beable to find it.

What age do you guys think protein bars would be good for kids?

Hmmmnnnn...I don't know when I'd give DS a protein bar - probably not until I think he could handle the sugar and other stuff better.  Not for a few more years, anyways!

Beth - thanks! I look forward to the recipe!

Yeah, I have never really looked to see what is in a protein bar, so my original question is probably a bit silly! Come to think of it, I probably wouldn't give one to my LO until she specifically asked for one (like, in 5 or 6 or more years time - heehee!).

I have had lots of great ideas from this thread, so thank you ladies.

talked to my mom today, FINALLY, and she said that the recipe she uses is on the bag of dried Navy beans.  Take a look in your store at the bags of dried beans, apparently a lot of them have good recipies ont he back.

Sorry i don't have an exact recipe for you dear!

Beth - thanks for that - no problem. I don't know if we have Navy beans here in the UK, but I will look at all the dried haricot beans in the supermarket next time we are in.

Had a wee break through on the old meat front over the weekend - DH bought some sliced ham and I broke a piece up into small bite-sized pieces for Katie, thinking that she probably wouldn't eat it, but, of course, she decided to show me I was wrong and promptly ate it all really quickly and asked for more! So that is another protein food that she likes - yippee! I am going to try sliced chicken again soon, as it has been a while since she has eaten it. I am assuming that I shouldn't give her too much ham because of the salt (she is over 2 now, though).

Thanks again lovely ladies - you have given me a lot of ideas and I feel much more confident about this part of Katie's diet.
