Hugs sweetie.  You know you can call me if you need some telephone support during this.  You are NOT a pushover, this sucks.  It must have been so difficult, but you both got through it.  It was the times that it was so horrible that I cried with him, that kept me from giving in and going back to the paci when I weaned Owen.  So hang on to tonight, and let it give you strength.

Love you
Z

Thanks for the support guys!  And, a small miracle:  He slept all night till 6:30 this morning!!!!!!!  Woo-hoo!!!!  Thank goodness.  I know I'll have to deal with those NWs eventually, but I'm glad they didn't happen the first night!
On the downside, he woke up sneezing and with a runny nose.  He seems to feel ok, so I'm going to keep at it--DH would kill me if I asked him to take the crib tent down, and I don't want to have to do that first night over again, so send Chase healthy vibes, please!!!!! I thought he'd already had that cold that DH has...must be another one :(

Thanks guys!  Here's an update...

Chase has a cold, but he's doing a great job with this, so we're sticking with it.  I'm laying about 2 steps away from the crib now (that is huge, you know, for us!!)  For naps and last night, he doesn't even cry now--just looks at me every once in a while to make sure I'm there.  The hardest past is the NWs, cause he does cry then.  But I just talk him thru it, and eventually he lays down and goes back to sleep.  3 steps away from the crib, here we come.....

So, I am now at the doorway to ds' room.  He cries for 1-5 min, then settles down to go to sleep.  I say my phrase if he seems to get really upset, otherwise I'm just quiet.   I thought I'd do one more night/nap on my cushions right outside his doorway where he can still see me, then start wiwo.  Does that sound right?
The hardest part at this point is getting him into bed and getting disentangled from him enough to close the crib tent.  I feel bad cause I feel like I'm putting him in jail.  I experimented with a timer (we can hug and cuddle while he stands in his crib till the timer goes off), but that really seemed to make it worse--like delaying the inevitable.  So, I'm trying to do tons of extra hugs and kisses in the rocking chair at the end of his winddown, and then as soon as he goes into his bed, the tent closes and I go to my cushion.  That seems to be working a bit better.
I can't wait to get back to sleeping in a regular bed.  My back is killing me!  I'm so proud of Chase though :)

Yes that sounds right.  I think when you start wi/wo, maybe only come into the doorway--where your cushions are right now--and say your phrase, then step out of sight and so on.

I think you're smart to cuddle lots in the chair, but not once he's in the crib.  Because that's the old prop, I think it's sort of tantalizing/a tease to cuddle in the crib for a  limited time and then refuse to do it until he falls asleep. . . . if that makes any sense.

Yeah Jen!  I'm so proud of Chase too!  And you!

Have you seen in improvement in his night wakings or nap length as you've become less involved in his falling asleep process?

No NWs for the last 3 nights :o  But, I actually wish he would have some so he could see that I am not going to help him get back to sleep in the middle of the night either (I've known Chase for too long to think that they're gone for good)!

OK, now, a question...I have always been the one to put ds down for naps/at night/night wakings.  DH has tried but Chase always freaks out till I come.  Now that we will be starting wiwo, when should I start involving DH so both of us are able to put him to sleep?

I would say Yes, absolutely.  Tell him exactly how you do things, so he can copy you.  I would stay away from having both of you in there as that would be way too fun.  Remember too that with DH it will be different, so it may take longer than it does with you - but he will get that both of you can say good night, and he can put himself to sleep.  You're doing so great.  Give Chase a squeeze from Owen and I, he is a star!
