Is this just my town?
« on: January 28, 2008, 15:18:53 pm »
So the grocery stores in my town have limited selection of baby veggie purees.  I hadn't noticed at first, as DD hated to be spoon fed & so we've had great success with the BLW approach.  Recently she's started eating pasta, which she loves, and we've tossed it with pea "sauce" (pureed peas) which she loves even more.  So I sent DH to the store to buy some purees to go with pasta, such as broccoli & spinach.  He came back saying all they had, besides peas, was carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, and something called "mixed vegetables".  Then I went to the other store in town, thinking to myself, "he just didn't look properly", and found the same!

So, maybe it's just my town-- we're kind of in "meat & potatoes" country here.  And I can make her food myself, it's just convenient to have the purees on hand.  Just curious what kind of selection others have in their parts of the country (or other countries).

We're in the US, in the Northeast, BTW.

I started solids with #1 when we lived in the northeast, started with #2 when we lived in the midwest. The selection was the same in both places. The major baby food companies just don't make much in the way of veggies, IMHO. That's why I ended up making most of their food and freezing it.

If you check in the frozen or refrigerated section, some stores are starting to carry more "exotic" baby food, usually organic. I know our Whole Foods market here carries it and so does our Super Target.

Well i found the same problem here in my small town in Nova Scotia,Canada so i just started making my own.Which i might add my lo likes much better. But just for curiosity sake i emailed the heinz baby food company and asked the question of why these veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and a few others were not available. After all they are part of a healthy balanced diet and the reply back was..."We really dont have a answer to that question, but we will forward this email on to our production department".And i havent heard anything from them since so i will continue to make my own and they wont be getting my money....lol.
I also went looking one day in my frozen food section and found a few smaller bags of a few different veggies (here these are brand named green giant) so i dont have to buy the really big bags that would last forever before they would get eaten.
