Sounds like your lo is taking majority of her milk in the night, and then is not hungry enough during the day.  Have you tried cutting down on the night time feeds?

Have a look here

and here

What is her day routine like can you post in terms of

E times & how much
A how long
S when & how long

She could be waking foe other reasons and has got into the habit of being fed. Tweaking your routine may help.

Hi

Complete newbie here and would appreciate some help PLEASE.  Bought the BW book at the start of Jan 2010 and have recently switched to 3hour feed schedule from 4hour in attempt to get more food in during the day to help with sleep through and colic/windy baby.  Hey presto, I started with 4oz feeds every 3 hours and my little man slept through from DF at 11pm to 7am (he was 8 weeks old then, now 11 weeks old).  He was draining his 4oz bottles from Day 1, so I upped him to 5oz every 3 hours, after about a week he started to drain them too!  So moved him to 6oz every 3  hours and he fed okay for a few days and over the past week he has started refusing certain feeds (screaming and pulling away).  What should I do, go back to 5oz every 3 hours or simply move to feeding every 4 hours (6oz feeds).  I'm desparate for my little fella not to be in discomfort (he does suffer from terrible trapped wind) but also don't wish to loose the great nights sleep we have been getting for a few weeks.  I suffer from PND so the sleep is crucial reallly.... ANY help is most appreciated.  Thanks v much.  Lisa

Hi there and welcome!

Sounds like you have done really well so far and your nights sound fab so I can understand not wanting to mess with them!

Is it the same feeds everyday that he is refusing or is it random? Have you tried any thing for the wind like infacol drops (that's a UK brand but most countries have the same thing I think its simeticone?) or gripe water? Have you looked at the reflux info to rule that out? http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0

He could have been going through a gowth spurt and now doesn't need the 6oz feeds - maybe 5oz feeds 3 hourly suit his tummy better. He is a bit young for 4 hour feeds as he won't be up for the 2 hours A time which throws EASY completely. My refluxers went to 4 hour feeds earlier then suggested and we had to do EASAE (or similar) until they could handle the A time.

THANK YOU for that response.

It is interesting because I thought about going back to the 3 hour, 4-5oz schedule, but my mum looked after Harry this weekend and she fed him every 4hours (against my instructions so didn't tell me until late last night!) and he took the 6oz and also slept through.  Hmmm what to do.  Obviously 6oz every 4 hours is more convenient but I'd have to follow the EASAEY routine which I'm happy to do as even in the 3 hour routine my little fella point blank refused to sleep more than 1hour and seems pretty settled (altho windy) during the day and sleeps ok at night.

What do you think Lolly given that new info - would you still go back to the 3hrs 4-5oz feed???   In answer to your question, the refused feeds were generally random but ALWAYS the 10AM and 7PM feed (following the 7AM, 10AM, 1PM,4PM 7PM routine)......

THanks ever so much, it is great to talk about such things.
Will check out the reflux but have so far dismissed that as it wasn't affecting every feed.

If he is happy with 6oz every 4 hours and keeping it down then stick with that! Watch his weight gain and wet dirty nappies to make sure he is getting enough but if he is content for 4 hours and sleeping through it sounds like he is! Lucky you!  You can increase his A time very gradually until he is able to do 2 hours and you may find you get better naps.

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks.
I'm going to aim to fix this feeding problem and then move onto trying to sort out naps as he is erratic but can only deal with one issue at a time right now - choose your battles an all that.
thanks again.

Can the babies get overweight with too much milk? Is it setting them up for weight problems in the future?

It's very unlikely. Milk (human milk especially) is designed to be their primary source of nutrition for the best part of their first year and babies are very good at self regulating their intake.

What are your concernes? How old is your baby?
