Wonder if I need a tweak?
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:28:00 am »
Hiya, we have separate bedtimes to stop kids keeping each other up.

jack goes bed at 7.30 and abbi at 6.45 and is generally asleep by 7.00/7.15 max

Her daily routine looks like this:

Wake 5:45/6am/6:30 am, this varies!

Nap at 11:45 - 1:30pm (1 and 3/4 hours), literally have never been able to keep her up later even when she woke at 7am

Bed 6:45

Sooooooooooooo the ews of like 5:45 are happening a little more, do I need a tweak? she def cant do without a nap in the day as is howling by midday!! :-\

Any thoughts :D thanks x

Yeah, she might just be needing less sleep time at night.  Have you tried shifiting everything by 15 minutes to see if that helps?

I like that idea of shifting by 15 mins every day till nap is at 12:30 or what have you...

How old is Abbi now?  She might need a shorter nap (don't you hate that?!)

hi and thanks am deleriously tired by EW this morn, so yep, 15 min shift is poss and will do

Also she is 2 year 6 months old.  How short should I make the nap?  When ds has on occasion woke her early from her naps with his noise, she has wailed all afternoon.  UGH! I put her to bed late the other day and had to spend ages waking her up and she cried all the time :( :(

I hate this age :(

she is definitely at that yucky, awkward napping stage.....at 2, most naps are 1.5 hrs on "average" with nights of about 11 - 11.5.  At 3, the nap drops to 1 - 1.25 hrs and the night drops to 10.5 - 10.75.  So she's probably in the middle somewhere.  It's a tough place to be because she's OT from bad nights, so she wants to make up for it with a long nap (and there isn't a mum around who doesn't love the long nap), but then bedtime is a bear because of the long nap, so she gets to bed late, has another short night and is OT again....so you could try shifting things 15 min, and/or shaving 15 min off that nap (I know that sucks especially since she's making up for the nights there, but it's likely hurting you in the long run) - if you cut the nap a bit, you may want to do bedtime the same or 15 min earlier at first.

hey thanks :) thats great! today she went sleep at 12, and I woke her up at 1.15, plan is to put her down AT 7pm tonight to be asleep for 7:30 latest maybe. then ds can pop in bed at his normal 7:30 time. lets see if this makes a difference. does that sound ok? Normally she is asleep for 7pm but just have a feeling a later bedtime might do the trick. what do you think? she seems happy. I woke her up by turning off her fan and then didnt speak to her until she came round a bit, and then she came to me. She seemed happier that way :)

sounds like a great plan to me - here's to hoping she thinks so too :)  It might take a few days for the routine switch to sort out into better all around sleeping, so just keep that in mind too.

thank you :D it didnt go so good tonight lol, she was put down at 7 on the dot, and fell asleep at 8pm, I do kind of attribute that to ds being so noisy and also her routine being ever so slightly changed. Am so PRAYING for a lay in from her tomorrow, fingers crossed!

am back :) She actually slept until 6:45am which is great stuff :D :D

She napped from 12pm until 1.10 when I woke her up, she cried for a long time as didnt want to get up, but I am hoping that it will stop soon once she is used to the shorter naps!

She was in bed for seven and asleep before seven thirty this eve, so we shall see if tomorrow is as good :) hope so!

Thanks again :D

YAY for the later wake up!!!!  My Abby's always a bear to wake up from naps, so we try to "help" her wake up on her own - by just making a bit more noise in the house prior to when she needs to be up - or opening her door but keep things at a "regular" noise level.  She often needs some extra cuddle time when she has to be woken up (and I don't actually mind that!) - but she has gotten used to it every time we've needed to shorten her nap.  Let me know how you get on!

hi again :)

sadly on sunday she woke at 5:45 and this morn at 6am :(

The funny thing is that if we get ds and put him in with dh, he goes back to sleep, and then I go into ds's bed, put the fan on and tell dd to go back to sleep and she does ???

So both woke at 6am, and dh came and woke me and dd at 7:30am.

We live by a road where the traffic starts at 6am, it is possible that it wakes them tbh, i mean big tractors. tried putting the fan on when I wake for my 3.30 am pregnant wee, but that doesnt work. Maybe i should just be pleased we get both kids to swap rooms and they go back to sleep kwim and so do we??

They both sleep through the night with not a peep out of them, so could be worse right?
On a good note, when we next move which will hopefully be in near future they will both have their own room. when dd wakes early she disturbs jack, and then they start messing about screaming, running round, i mean, they are little, they aint going to think hmmmm am tired lets go back to sleep are they, i suppose maybe they think wooohooo party time, ive been asleep awhile!

They clearly need the extra hours sleep though as they go back to sleep if its me in with abbi and jack with dh.

Think I will keep naps short still, and if she ew's get into jacks bed and get another hours sleep :)

Em, I think that you should still go with the 6.45 bedtime,  from what I can tell is that the original problem could be due to overtiredness and it stemmed from her afternoon nap was too early so not benefitting her nighttime sleep, so if she goes to sleep at 12 and has around 1.5 hours (hopefully) she will go to bed at 6.45pm which will be around 5.5 hours after waking from her afternoon nap which will (hopefully) combad the overtiredness and therefore sleep later for you.  What I mean is, adjust the daytime nap by 15 minutes but don't change the bedtime because if you do then you adjust the nap and change the bedtime then you are just oving the timings, but her earl wakings are a signal that she is overtired so still needs the early bedtime.  Am I waffling?  Probably!

What do you think? Not about the waffling!  What do you think about my suggestions?

Hi mari, thanks for the thoughts too :) I put her bed yest aft at 12pm, she slept until 1.25 and woke naturally.

I put her to bed at 6:45, she was still awake at 8.30, i went in and she had a horrible nappy, so changed that and she went to sleep at 9pm :( she then woke at 6am, and the pair of them were playing/shouting/screaming/running about :( :( :( I went in, and ordered her back into bed and sent ds into dh and i got into his bed. at 6.30 ish I looked at her and she was back to sleep, and then woke at 7:40am

It just gets worse each night, so hit and miss now whether she will go sleep.  Thankfully ds goes to sleep even with her singing her heart out, but last night I was cross as when I went in, while ds had been asleep she had removed the plaster from his hand (he had fell and cut himself), and was IN his bed, with her blankets and teddies, which although looked cute, meant she wasnt sleeping, she was singing in his ear, and he didnt wake, as he sleeps sooooooooooo deeply!!!

UGH I know 6am isnt the end of the world, but she screams all morn with tired, and now today she has only caught up on an extra hr, and I just want her to sleep and be happy. I am up and down all night peeing (joy of preg ;) )  so am tired as it is, so going into their bedroom at 6 seems the only way to get myself an extra hours kip......

Shes looking at me now and can see big bags under her eyes

I dont even know what to do today napwise !

thanks for listening, I was greeted by doggy poo everywhere this morning so am not feeling in the best mood!!!!!!
