You can give paracetamol regularly for a long time without any harmful side effects - it is a very safe drug when you give the correct dosage, so I wouldn't worry about giving it while you think she is teething.  Ibuprofen does last longer - about 8 hours, I think - and I would say that we generally get better nights with ibuprofen than calpol.

Agree with Clare, we find the Ibuprofen works better and lasts longer for teething pain. And if it's REALLY bad (hello, upper canines), you can stagger both so give Calpol at 4pm, Nurofen at 7pm, Calpol at 10pm etc.

Thanks girls, I don't have any ibuprofen but will get some tomorrow. I gave calpol 10 mins before bed, she fell asleep in 7 mins, 8.15pm...which has been a good time before for bedtime but goodness knows what will happen tonight. She was dribbling today for the first time in months so we are sure it is the toothypegs bothering her, poor kid. Just wish DH wasn't on such a hard shift right now!!

Feeling positive about tonight, no idea why, perhaps I am in denial :)

Anna how are Stan's EWs? Is he still giving you "lie-ins" ;)

*touch wood* he is doing brilliantly. Silly mummy didn't recognise OT when it was staring me in the face. A few days of long naps sorted him out, he's consistently sleeping til 6.30 now which is fine - obviously later would be nice at the weekends but that's when I'd have to wake him up on work days anyway. So he's pretty much doing 11-11.5hr nights and 1.5-2.5hr naps (depending if he's at nursery or at home).

Actually last night was amazing, he woke up at about 1.30 and my heart sank, he started to cry at his gate and I just called out to him and said it's still time to sleep, please get back into bed and put your blanket on - and he did! Just stopped crying and put himself back to bed! Amazing.

So glad she went down easily tonight, fingers crossed for a restful night for you all :-*

Fingers crossed for you, Charli.  We have put the girls in together tonight, so we could have a great night, and we could have an absolute shocker!  And (((hugs))) for the hard shift.  My dh works away a lot, so I get the being on your own thing, but I suspect the difficult shifts are even more difficult since he is there but not there.

Great news about the "lie-ins" Anna - hope it continues.

Wow that is great Anna, I sooo hope it continues for you. That is brill that he put himself back to bed too, what a clever boy.
The shifts are a pain and we live a good 35 miles from his work, round the M25 at that so even if he finishes at 6.30pm on the dot it can take an age for him to get home. I am thankful he never works away from home though, I think I would find that really hard so (((hugs))) to you too :) And here's hoping for a peaceful night for you.
Have the girls never shared a room then? We have 3 bedrooms but I *think* I will let DD and this next baby share once baby is old enough...Although it totally depends on how they are both sleeping at that point!

Where do you live?  We're in Kent, so dh has to drive round the M25 sometimes too.

The girls haven't shared, but we always planned that they would when E was old enough.  Not sure if we have really reached that point yet, but M was so excited we thought we'd give it a go!

We live in Herts and DH works near Heathrow...I went to Kent Uni :)

That is sweet that she was excited, I hope it goes well! Ideally I would keep the new baby in my room til 6m, then the kids would share...But DD was in our room for 8m because she was nowhere near STTN so I just won't know til I've figured the new kid out :)

A 10.20pm  :-\ took 40 mins of hysterical screaming to settle :( Totally refused dummy, fell asleep with her fingers in my mouth with me lying next to the cot...I am 99% sure this is teething pain but I gave calpol just before 8, I can't give her anymore yet. The other 1% thinks she is playing me the *slighest* bit as she was just screaming and pointing to the door shouting "OUT" So I get the feeling if I had put her in my bed she would have settled a lot quicker...but the pain won't be any less in my bed so I didn't want to give in so early...
Night  :'( xxx

Calpol should last a good 4 hours, so I dont think it was pain unless she is a REALLY bad teether...

Oh no Clare!! It's especially grating when you have had a great night the previous night. Do you think E is teething?

This is definitely the worst I have ever seen her with teething, but you're right, the calpol shouldn't have worn off that quickly, I am glad I didn't give in. Thankfully she slept from 11pm-4am after that NW, which I am thrilled with given recent nights. Then at 4am she had more calpol, lots and lots of screaming but I settled her in her bed, snuck back to mine at 4.40am and she was awake at 6am (I think she heard DH going to work) Her room was very cold so I put her in with me and we dozed til after 7. So actually by recent standards, not a bad night...

So I am a bit clueless with this teething lark, I never noticed it having an affect before although that may be because she has never slept well! She is cutting bottom molars by the looks of things, she has 4 bottom teeth but we can see 2 coming in at the same time on one side, perhaps that is why it is so painful for her. Presumably I can give her teething gel and pain meds at the same time? Bonjela isn't medicinal is it? I just realised she may have had a very dry mouth after screaming for 40 mins straight last night, and the drooling may have dehydrated her, but of course last night it didn't occur to me to give her any water  :-[ I will have a cup in her room tonight...

if you can get some ibuprofen today i would give that, she might be teething badly and you need to rule that out (either literally or just from your mind) before you will know how much of it is teething and how much of it is the 'usual' stuff.

i'm sure she would have slept well in your bed, they get some comfort from being with you when they aren't 100% from illness, teething or OT

yes you're fine with the bonjela, i actually tried a few out when i had toothache one time and found calgel the best  :D

sorry to hear about your 3hr nw Clare, that sucks  :P :-*

I'm pretty sure she is teething - she has been screaming all morning and pointing at her mouth.  Although, entertainingly, we gave her some calpol before we went out in the car and by the time we got to where we were going she was sitting in the back going "yaay yaay!" - the wonder of drugs! ;D

The molars are pretty bad - they're such big teeth and they have so many points and they take a really long time to come through.  Bonjela isn't medicinal, so it's fine to give with calpol/ibuprofen - also worth looking at other teething gels as some work better than others for different babies.  Dentinox is good - if you lick your finger after putting it on your lips go numb! - and I think there's one called calgel as well.  If you like homeopathic remedies, a lot of people like Nelsons Teething Powders - you can give those as well as everything else.

Thanks girls, well I ended up giving her calpol at about 10am (before I had been out to get neurofen) because just like E she was pointing into her mouth and crying :( Similarly she was happy as larry shortly afterwards!! Lots of drugged up toddlers wondering around today :) I also rubbed some calgel (thanks both!) into her gums before her nap, well tried too, she was basically eating it off my finger, hopefully it will have some effect!!

I don't know if I am getting confused, are the ones next to the 4 bottom teeth molars? If so that is what is bothering her I think.

She screamed before her nap but was asleep at 12.05 after a mini wind-down which I don't normally do. She had spilt water on her top so I put her sleep suit back on, had a quiet story and a cuddle and took her up...Praying this will induce a nap longer than 45 mins but who knows!
