UK Safe Foods
« on: June 19, 2010, 06:07:11 am »
Forgive me if this info is on here already but I can't find it!

Can people share UK safe brand foods/ names that they use?

The idea of a big label Reading shopping session is not appealing with a 3 week old and 21 month old in tow!

It is tough. I used a list of milk free products from the Sainsburys website the other day only to find that Mr Kipling must have changed their ingredients and I was eating something with milk protein in it! (should be double checked - doh).

Anyway, the best way I have found of shopping is Waitrose online delivery. On their website you can narrow down their entire product range by foods for a milk free diet, then you just add what you want from that list to your trolley! SO much easier than checking every blumming product you want to put in your trolley in the suypermarket.

Thanks ladies - love the waitrose thing - will have to take a look.

Junk food is OK too.

Not soy free yet but that will be the next step!

ok I'm back! I can really recommend the alprosoy dark chocolate pots from the freefrom section in tesco or asda. They are really nice. Even though they are meant for DS, i use them quite often for my lunch at work ;)

Most of the houmous's in any shops are safe (nice with asda breadsticks) but steer away from other dips, as they tend to have milk powder or cream in!

Kelloggs cereals are quite good: raisin wheats, corn flakes, rice krispies, even crunchy nut clusters are ok. Have just moved DS onto rice dream milk (available in the UHT milk area) and that seems to be going down ok here.

The trufree range is good too

All the following are egg, dairy and soy free:

Golden wholemeal bread from Marks and Spencers
Plain Hob Nob biscuits
Asda crumpets
Tesco crumpets
Some of the Organix range - animal biscuits, gingerbread men, date and apple bars, cereal bars, fruit pots
Little Stars fruit juice jellies
Vitalite spread
Pure spread - the one in the yellow tub. There is also one with soy so if you are avoiding soy, look out.
Eccles cakes from Aldi
Birds eye fish fingers
Heinz baked beans

I'll add any more as I think of / remember them.

Not sure about other stores, but our Asda has a whole 'Free From' section - could you phone your local and find out if they do?

'Pure' margarines. They do a good sunflower or olive oil spread. I LOVE my butter and have always disliked marg but they are OK in a sandwich - have no taste really. Unlike Vitalite which is vile! Tested the sunflower one in a sponge cake with 'butter' icing and it was great  ;D

Hi,

Has anyone else found any dairy, soy and egg free UK foods?

I got some 'cheese sauce' from Holland and Barrett - looks safe to me but how it can taste of cheese ?!?

Must admit I don't bother with stuff like that since I know it won't be the 'real deal'.

What sort of things are you looking for? I'm not egg free though.

Not tried it but DS eats that "cheese" sauce mix - easy to make :)

Every supermarket now seems to have a "free from" section which will have the relevant foods.

Vanilla Alpro pots are the ones we buy for DS, which he LOVES!!!

Also great fans of the Pure spread (works fine in baking too), yellow one.
DS not that keen on the free-from bread and it doesn't look too appetising (but the bread mixes - Wrights, I think - are free from dairy/egg and you just add water to them) - found beside the baking stuff/flour, etc

WATCH OUT for cold meats as some of them have milk protein etc in them (not sure why!!!) ???

Almost all bread (especially white bread) !!! :( That is why we use the Wright's bread mixes.

If cooking dairy free I just follow "normal" recipes and they usually work out fine :)
