How strange the differences in the sugar content?  I will never understand it.

This thread reminded me, once when I was out with my SIL when dd was about 10 months old, we were at a pizza place, and I put some cheerios on dd's tray, breaking each one in half as I did.  I asked SIL "When can I stop breaking these in half?" And she quickly answered "About 3 months ago!"  I laughed so hard!!!

They are made by different companies - Nestle in the UK and General Mills in the US.

In the US Cheerios have about 7 or 8 different types...some low in sugar (the original) and goes up from there. I just wish there was an alternative for UK moms, because Cheerios are such a great munchy food, and kind of a staple for Moms of toddlers around here!

UK cheerios - 21.3g sugar/ 100g product

Mmmm, I thought they were high in sugar ;)

The boys love porridge. And we also eat Weetabix, Rice Krispies and Cornflakes - they all go quite soft after a while in the milk, so they should be fine with younger babies.

Thanks for all the posts folks!!!  Interesting that UK & US cheerios have such different sugar content.  Stupid really.

DS will eat readybrek if I mix it 50:50 with baby porridge but wont eat it on its own - I'm guessing he doesnt like the texture.  He also likes weetabix but was just trying to think of some others to try him on to expand the range of breakfasts a little!  will maybe try the rice krispies/cornflakes too.

There are LOTS of alternatives....just none of them named Cheerios! ;D  :P

Organix snacks are great, my DS was eating the rice cakes from about 7 months or so, and not long after that the carrot sticks and onion rings.   For tinier things to help with motor skills he loved to pick up kernels of corn or peas (still does love both!) and was on both of them probably around 8-9 months.

from what I can see, cornflakes have only 8.8g/100g....

the fave cereal here in Polska as a fingerfood or handheld snack for very little ones are corn puffs....the nautral unflavoured ones of course...

Just some other options for breakfasts which we love and would work for a younger baby - we make our own dropscone (Scotch Pancake) mixture - its got milk, eggs, flour and a little bit of sugar and tiny pinch of salt, so pretty good really. I make a batch at the beginning of the week and it lasts for 4 or 5 days in the fridge.

Then you can serve it with honey, jam (OK sugar but mmmmm) or chopped up fruit.

That, porridge and cheeriups and raisins are our favourite breakfasts. We've given him Cheerios (we call them cheeripus as he loved them so much when he was little we would bribe him out of a grump with them!) from quite a young age - despite the sugar content the rest of his diet was largely home made, and he had no sweets or chocolate etc until more recently, so I figured in the overrall picture they weren't a disaster.

And someone commented on the supermarket own brands having less salt and sugar - that is generally true I've found, although I suspect its from an economy point of view rather than a vested interest in our health!

Remember no honey before a year, but agave syrup is similar and is super yummy!  :)

Oooh of course, forgot about honey, but we use agave syrup too as I don't like honey.

We buy some wheat puffs that are sugar free (like sugar/honey puffs but without the sugar/honey  :P), and use them to bulk out other cereals - that way it halves the amount of sugar that he would have if he was only eating something like rice crispies or bran flakes.   We do porridge with banana or grated apple and raisins some days, but we get bored of having the same old thing every day!
