stupid question - cheerios
« on: April 05, 2011, 07:01:54 am »
I see that a number of you give your LO's cheerios for breakfast & I have a stupid question:

As they are small & could be a choking risk do you let them go soggy & mush them up before giving to your LO or do they eat them whole?

DS is 7months & wasn't sure if I could try him on them if I did this, or if I'd need to wait til he's older & can chew them whole.

I think the reason cheerios are not necessarily a choking risk is because they have a hole in, so even if it gets stuck, lo can still breathe, kwim? Xxx

They are great dry too - really good for hand eye coordination when LO gets a little older. My ds helps himself to them dry out of the box if I'm not quick enough with breakfast!!

They go to mush in seconds in their mouth as well.

Are they sugar coated? Just wondering as I've seen them in the supermarket here.

The ones you can get in the UK are really quite sugary. For some reason the US version isn't.

Here in Canada we have Honey Nut Cheerios, frosted, apple cinnamon and some others, which are all sweet, but there is also just the plain Cheerios which ppl give to their LOs. I think it's the Yellow Box.
I'm guessing the mulitgrain is also unsweetened, but I'm not sure.

As Anna says, there is a significant difference in cheerios in the US and UK.  If I was in the US I would be OK giving my 8mth old cheeios, but since I'm in the UK, I wouldn't give them.  Still don't - too much sugar.

UK cheerios - 21.3g sugar/ 100g product
US cheeiros (yellow box) 1g sugar / 100g product

Charli, can you find other cheerio type cereal at a health store?  There are other brands here that are healthier than things like Cheerios.  Natures Path makes corn, millet, and rice puffs that have nothing offensive in them.  They also make their own 'O' cereal that is healthier than regular cheerios.  Maybe if you have a look around you'll be able to find something.

Cheerios pretty much turn to mush when wet, like pp mentioned, so not much of a choking hazard.

I really don't know Charli, Shreddies are very sugary too, and muesli like Alpen is very high sugar. Stan has porridge.

Weetabix crunchy bran = 5.7g / 100g
all bran = 18g / 100g
rice krispies = 10g/ 100g
shreddies = 15.4g / 100g
shredded wheat = 0.9g / 100g
puffed wheat = 2.0g / 100g
bran flakes = 22g / 100g

Found those after a quick google search.  I do find though that the supermarket own brands have less - the rice krispies / bran flakes / all bran is for kelloggs.  The boys love the weetabix crunchy bran - they eat them straight from the box.
