This can't be this hard can it?
« on: June 10, 2011, 14:23:09 pm »
So dd2 is nursing well..yay...BUT wants to use me as a pacifier. I understand bfing proponents encourage babies to use breast as pacifier, but I don’t like it.  I like to feed her and have that bonding time, but not to constantly be attached to my nipple to comfort to sleep. I have a toddler to care for and yes I could wear sling, but how much longer will this go on?? The other thing I don’t like is that since she comforts with the nipple, she ends up spitting up because.she is full already.  I've tried giving her pacifier since two weeks, but I guess I took too long because she totally refuses...I need another alternative :-(

hugs ladies -

have you tried lots of different types of pacis? We needed 5 brands before we found one Emma liked.
Another tip is to dip the paci in something tasty - I used gripewater here...and my two loved it.

I agree, try lots and lots ofdifferent shapes of pacis. DD2 also refused 5 brands before finally accepting Nuk newborn. My friend's baby who was 3 months and who'd refused all pacis they'd tried actually also took to the Nuk (gace her a spare one of ours) so perhaps BF babies like them ??? Some also prefer latex to silicone or other way round. It is well worth perservering if you want an alternative sucking and soothing method. Some babies just take a little longer to take to it. You could also try dipping it in EBM. Will she accept a clean finger to suck to give your nipples a break?

So after some crying :( and back and forth switching with my nipple and NUK  and she took it in her sleep...some progress....Now the paci won't really replace a feed like bfing sites warn right?

We are using a paci as ds wants to suck all the time but won't use my nipple unless he is hungry (and I wouldn't let him anyway as, like you, I have other things to keep me busy!) and we are not having any problems with feeds.

never had an issue here either, they always spat out the paci when hungry.....only used it to comfort-suck.

I know Becky I'm still struggling....rethinking bfing because of her dependency on my breasts...it's hard, but I feel guilty since I so badly wanted to bf my first and failed :-/

both mine had dummies, I had trouble feeding DD, but it was due to introducing a bottle, DS bf quite happily until 1.5 years.
Both started with dummies in the first month, while it would have been good to not have one, or not have one so early, quite frankly they were both comfort suckers!!
