Mucous?
« on: December 20, 2012, 01:57:31 am »
If poo is mucousy (is that a word?), what does that mean?  Also, if its mucousy, is it the consistancy of snot or egg whites or something?

It can mean a few things hun.
Can you describe more what you mean by the mucus in the poops..is it stringy? thick like slime/snot? lots of it or just a touch? any blood, poop colour? normal consistancy etc - also how is your LO in themselves?
Large amounts of mucus can mean an intolerance, but also other things such as milk imbalance (if BF) or teething etc

Her stool is either a light green , sometimes tab to brownish, and yellow green.  I'm working on single side nursing as I think there is a foremilk imbalance (was switching between breast too quickly).

As for mucous, I've seen stringy.  Only once did we see red specs.  I called my pediatrician and was told not to worry.  She's had green poo since about 3 weeks old and now she's 12 weeks.  Everyone dismissed my concern over the green storm and told me her gut was just not mature enough.

It makes me so frustrated. Every nurse will tell you something different with regards to breastfeeding.  Pediatrician s seem clueless about it.  This is the first place where people seem to know war they are ralking about.  I wish I found this months ago.

I have a fore milk imbalance but it seems to be better with block feeding (ie. feeding from one breast for 4hrs then switching sides).  You can get lots of help on these boards  :).

Yep, mucous comes with the foremilk overload. You should see improvements with the block feeding.

Here's all the symptoms:

Green poop.  Some seedy, some frothy (but haven't seen that in a while).  I think there may be mucus, but not sure.  The last diaper (yellow green poo) if I took the front and back of the diaper and touched the insides together, you can see the poo stretch between the diaper once opened again, but not a whole lot (does this make sense?)

Gassy!  This girl farts a lot (smelly too).  At night we notice she wiggles and squirms a lot and most of the time it's to fart.  We thought she was waking herself because of the farting.

She sneezes a lot
Her nose has crap in it all the time.  I was cleaning daily but them i read this makes it worse.
She has the hiccups a lot (mostly dry but Mon or Tuesday it was wet hiccups
Wet and dry burps (we were using a hand towel for the wet ones as it was a lot of spit up)
Spit up usually looks like think breast milk and we get the occasional cottage cheese ones

When breastfeeding, she pulls on and off a lot.  I think she has a shallow latch at the moment.  My first letdown usually feels pretty strong (I equate it to electricity running through my nipple).

She's pulled off once or twice and I've sprayed but it didn't seem like it would project very far.  That has not happened a lot (only the right side).

Cries in pain during car rides.  Doesn't seem to matter how long after a feed it happens.

Used to give a bottle of ebm at night until she started refusing the bottle.  At this time we could here here belly making gurgling noises as soon as she'd drink.  Then she'd stop drinking and cry in pain.  We didn't understand what was going on.  No more bottle from dad at night (had two bottles during the say on Wednesday and was fine).

I'm sure I'm forgetting something.  What do you all think?  And where do I go for here?  She's taking 1ml of Zantac 2x a day now and the next weight check is Wednesday

She was gaining well up until dec 7th.  We went to the pediatrician s that day.  In the 18th we were back tgee and weight gain from he 7th to the 18th was only 5 oz!  She was gaining at ~1oz per day.

I'm about to go dairy and gluten free.  Was gluten free til about thanksgiving (from pre pregnant til thanksgiving).   Doctor wants me to hold off on elimination diet to see how she does on Zantac first.  Waiting a week, although not that long, seems like an eternity.

I wouldn't doubt it being milk.  There was one time when her poo was green with red specs in it.  I had eaten a lot of jalapeņo jack cheese.  I think we chalked it up to the jalapeņos.

She's eating every 3 hours through the night.  During the day, its difficult to get her to nurse for the lunchtime session.  Like she could go 5 hours without eating (I thought she was reverse cycling as this first happened a few weeks ago).  I then as pumping and feeding in an effort to revere the reverse cycle.  Now I have no idea what to think. I'm just giving the breast all the time with the hope of better weight gain

Hugs. :-* sounds a lot like us :(
It doesn't mean it is the same but T is a lot better on neocate (prescription formula for Mspi etc) I'm 99% sure he was intolerant to my milk, ad I did try dairy free, but total ed was just to challenging for us right now, along with a milk imbalance. Mac I just discovered he wasn't even gaining.

If the Zantac doesn't help I think you may need to try total elimination diet (or at least dairy and soy) - it may fix things. :-*

Hugs.... I know how hard it is x

I will most likely be doing that.  It's weird...there were times we'd see the return of the yellow poo and I was having dairy, so I didn't think that was it.  So many things to work on...the imbalance, diet, Zantac.  Geez!

My first bf goal was to make it to 6 weeks, then 3 months (12 days left til I reach that goal), then 6 months.  Maybe my going back to work and having to pump may resolve this issue more if I pump to dry and its a better balance of the milk for her.  Then at night I have to be very diligent about block feeding.  I need to get that down.

What are indication signs that block feeding is working?  Return of yellow poo?  Less gassiness?  Both?

Hugs Kelly.  Wrt block feeding, with my Lo, her poos returned to a more "normal" colour.  Some are greenish yellow or dark yellow but she's also a bit less fussy in the evenings (though I know that O and OT are playing a role in her evening fussiness but that's a separate issue).

If she's got a stuffy nose, the mucous could be due to her swallowing what is being produced by her nose rather than any gut issue, especially if it's the consistency of snot. :-\

She does have a stuffy nose (I think...it always looks like it needs to be cleaned out).  It does look like snot in her poo, but not a lot.

Some days she poops after the first 3 feedings snd then she doesn't go for a couple days.

I can't believe how much I worry about her bowel movements!  Ha!
