Up the A again?
« on: March 28, 2013, 16:09:56 pm »
Hi All about 2 weeks ago I changed his A time from 345 to 4hrs. He was doing 2hr naps in the AM on 3hr45min but he was getting increasingly harder to put down. This fixed the problem. He went back to 2hrs and self soothing. This was only 2weeks ago. But the past 4 days have been odd. 4 days ago he did 1hr15min but woke very fussy crying etc. Thought perhaps teeth. 3days ago he did 1hr 20min south woke happy, but yesterday he did 2hrs and I had to wake him. (he did have a 1hr waking in the night due to discomfort from gas, constipation but still did a 10hr night his usual after I apopped him back to sleep.) Then today he went down fine on his own no fuss but woke after 1hr10min happy as a clam. What gives? Do I up to 4hrs 15min so quickly?

Just an fyi he does 10hrs a night with no help and then I apop an additional hour in the am from 5:30-5:50 I rock and he usually sleeps till 6:30. I know I need to wean but I don't want an OT baby so this is a choice I make until I get his A times right and he drops to 1 nap. :/

So I tried to put him down early at 3:20 but he refused i ended up getting him down at 3:40 (an A of 3hrs 45min) and woke after 30min crying. Tried BT at 7 but fought till 7:20. Should i have shortened that 2nd A even more?

Hi Siobhan, what a nice photo of your LO! He has grown so much since the last photo you had!

What is his usual second A? And how long is the PM nap?
I am just wondering if you started the 2-1 transition already by capping one nap.

TBH, I'd be reluctant to increase the A again, because he is already on the high side of A for his age, yk? If I was in your shoes I'd try and keep the same A as you are doing now for another week or so and rethink things then if there is change.

Hi thanks so much for replying to me :).. I got this after I did his long nap in the AM and I did push to 4hrs 10min. He's always been super high A times low sleep needs but I certainly don't want to push it ofer and make him OT.  Currently his schedule/routine give or take 15 min is

Wake 6:30
E: 7 6oz
E:9 Solids
A:
S:10:30 He was sleeping 2hrs-12:30
E:12:45 Solids
E: 2:45 Bottle 8oz
S: Was trying to put to sleep at 4 but he's been fighting that A time and it's more like 4:14-4:45 sleep at 7:30  He still does that early waking at 5:30 but I can usually get im back down till 6:30..
Today I put him down at 10:40 (A time of 4hrs 10min) and he slept 2hrs. We'll see if he does it again tomorrow if not I'll put back at 4.  But yes I'm definitely in the 2-1 territory already on a 13hr day but he's been fighting that CN  and fighting BT a bit as he doesn't seem quite tired enough. Surprisingly yesterday was wierd but he slept till 6:30 by himself.
Yesterday was
W: 6:40
S:10:45
W:11:55
S: 3:40
W:4:10 crying
S:7:20 Tried to put down earlier fought it
Slept through till 6:30 which has never happened... Weird right?

Can't you try switching it and doing short am and long pm, we've done 40 min nap am after 4 hours then been getting 1.5 hour nap 3.5 hours after, then bt 3.5 hours after that! We were getting bedtime parties but this seems to have stopped this!
I've only changed recently as one day got total pm nap refusal and it got to 4.45pm so I just did 6pm BT and thought stuff this I'm not having this stress again lol!!
Been a bit hit and miss but generally works most days..,.although my day does start at 5.45am :-(

Funny u say that I'm currently rocking him after he refused tofays pm nap for the first time. I tried for a 4:20 nap its now 445 luckily just got him down, will do 20 min and normal BT, just need to get through this weekend. I honestly am scared to cap am nap as he usually does a GREAT am nap and hes never been a great afternoon napper.he only does 10hr night with an extra hr with my help. How did u figure out that A time after a cappwd nap? He's so young to go to 1 nap but he just keeps fighting these CNs.

I do first nap in pushchair out doing shopping or in car on way to shops and he wakes happy then! Just trial and error with A time had a couple of days with both short naps so had early BT but then I tend to just watch him around the 3 hour 15 mark and if he's getting a bit whingy go for 3.5 A or 3.45 if seems happier! Way to young for 1 nap my LO is he wouldn't make it to lunch without mini snooze but the day he did that 1 nap he slept 6-6.30 I was amazed lol!!
Mine always loved his am nap but I thought I'll give it a couple of weeks and see!! The long am nap was making BT and his day too long and I was always trying to get nap when it was tea time!
I did rock from 5-6.30 am but I think that was confusing him so I've just bit the bullet and get up earlier but he tends to chat away from 5.30 till 6 so I leave him to it and some times he nods off!!

Yeah see my lo will not sleep anywhere but his crib so it makes CN's a bit difficult. i'm not going to do anything til probably after this weekend and then just keep doing what i'm doing until april when classes end and the babysitter is gone and I can really work on his A times etc. If he'll go that long. He'll at least be 11.5months if we do end up just dropping the nap. As long as he's taking a good 2hr nap in the AM i'll just leave it status quo for now. I'll let you know how it goes :)

I will. he's only done EBT once and it actually worked well. He refused his nap for the babysitter (but it was a short day due to late wakeup from illness) and so she put him down at 6:30 and he slept till 6:30 when he normally only does a 10hr night.. But never since. :)  They're always changing it up. I just see some horror stories from some people doing short A in the AM getting horrible OT naps etc. so I'm a little afraid.

My LO always did great am nap, variable pm nap, and started refusing pm nap or playing for a long time before going to sleep.  At 12 months I moved her to 1 nap thinking she was ready but she wasn't.  We then went to short am/long pm and it has been working beautifully.  She wakes around 6:30 but I don't usually get her up til 7am, am nap 9:30-10:15, pm nap 1:30 til she wakes (usually 1.5hr, sometimes 2hr), then BT 7pm.  I put off trying short am nap for ages but now wish I'd done it sooner!

Hi thanks so much for your input. I may try it but he such a high A needs lo. I honesty don't think he would even go down for a nap that soon after waking? I'd have to APOP it by rocking and I really don't want to get into that habit.  He needs almost a full A after a 45min nap so I would need to Cap it as well at 40min even then he wouldn't do such a short A and then a long nap.. But it's worth a shot. I probably wont try for another few weeks I'll just deal with what we've got until I can be home for all Bedtimes. No idea what tonight will bring. He pretty much refused his BT bottle and I just got him down at 7:50.. UGH.. How did you end up transitioning and capping the AM nap? Did you just do it coldturkey?

Previously DD was having morning nap at 10 or 10:30, and for about 2 weeks was just one nap around midday, and we just cold turkey brought it back to 9:30am and I was amazed that she was happy to sleep at that time!  I think we have only had one time when she hasn't gone to sleep in the morning.  Sometimes she plays a bit before going to sleep but that is pretty normal for her at any nap or bedtime.

Ok so he woke at 12:45. Babysitter tried for 25min to get him to sleep from 4:30 on. She gave up i dont blame her. So that would put BT at like 5:45??? Thats so early.. im going to have to try this short am nap i think?

I think EBT is worth a try, many babies catch up on sleep that way.
