Is coconut milk my only option?
« on: September 09, 2013, 02:08:50 am »
Thomas can't have dairy, soy and oat milk has gluten (I think). Rice milk isn't ok for under 1s so is coconut my only option - it's only for cooking ATM.... ???

Technically oats are gluten free, but unless they are specifically processed apart from other grains they are cross contaminated that way. Do any oat milks have gf on the label?  I've never looked. Are nuts okay? Almond milk?

Ahh that's good to know. On some of the oat packs they say contains gluten - rather than trace of YK? - I assumed the oat milk may be the same. Ill have a closer look as there are also 2 oat milk brands I can check out. I quite like oat milk myself so if he can have it, that would be a bonus ;)

I've been told to avoid nuts for T till he is 1... But almond milk... ???

If it's just in baking etc rice milk should be fine (and we don't have the arsenic issue that there is in other places, so that's not a worry if that's why you say that he's under 1)

Isnt all rice affected by arsenic due to the fact that it grows in water? The FDA in the US is currently studying it to see what levels are safe. Not sure where rice milk falls with amounts and such.

I would avoid the almond milk then! There is hemp milk too but I have only ever seen it in a specialty food store.

Olly has oat milk and it didn't even cross cross my mind about wheat contamination tbh. If T eats oats now he is ok with oat gluten. It is the lack of wheat that makes it gluten free

T doesn't eat oats yet ;) grains he eats are millet, brown rice and quinoa
But, I love oat milk, so once he is 1 I may try it. I think here it's the 'same factory as' rather than 'trace of' :-\ I'm not sure...

Anyway. A friend on FB suggested water in place of milk so I may try this too if I can, and ten I thought chicken broth even ;)

The annoying thing with our coconut milk is it's typically in tins. ::)

If you use store bought chicken broth check the label, most are not gluten free! I've only ever found coconut milk in tins too (though cant say I really looked too hard for it!)

Heidi - there are lots of options for coconut milk that is in regular milk cartons now ;)  In major grocery stores - same with hemp milk!

Sara - if you are just using it for a bit of cooking - why not use his formula?

As for the rice milk debate - I have a friend whose LO has FPIES (read: allergic to everything!) and he was put on rice milk at 10 months in place of formula by a pediatric GI at Children's Hospital ;)  He's 2.5 and still alive ;)

Because his formula is RANK, and tastes like chemicals. (Oh why do I feed my child this you say :o ) I've made things up with it like cereal and it is gross...so I don't want to waste my expensive GF flour and coconut oil by making a batch of muffins or something with milk and it ruining it ;) same with in cooking.

Yeah - no carton coconut milk here. We have a lot of soy, rice and some oat. No hemp in the supermarket and coconut in tins. The coconut in the tins ALWAYS has a solid bit on top which is a pita!

I think I have seen 1 brand of coconut milk in a carton. I'll look out for it and let you know the brand name.

If you have the time and space (and a really good blender) you can totally make your own coconut milk from shredded coconut. Here's a simple recipe that takes about 10 minutes according to the recipe (although with the straining-out I'd plan on 15): http://wellnessmama.com/2447/homemade-coconut-milk/

The stuff in a tin I do keep on hand; I use Native Forest (don't know if you get that there) which has no BPA in the liner. If you can store it at a warmer temp or warm it up before use, then the thick stuff on top isn't so solid - the fats kind of congeal when it's cooler. Shaking the can vigorously before opening it helps too. My kids will happily lick off any of the solid stuff that sticks to the sides if I give them a little spatula. LOL

I know you're concerned about the rice milk - if I remember rightly, the arsenic comes from the rice plant leaching the arsenic from the soil - maybe you could do half-and-half coconut milk and rice milk? Not as thick so more easily drinkable and if you only add even just enough rice milk to thin it to a consistency you like for cooking/drinking/whatever and don't use it often? How old is your LO now? (I lose track!)

Oh, just before I hit Post, I had an inspiration: you could make your own oat milk too. Once you find GF oats, do this: http://ohsheglows.com/2013/01/10/homemade-oat-milk-easy-fast-cheap/ Definitely soak the oats overnight first - much easier to digest!

Coconut milk is a good alternative, I don't do dairy so I drink coconut milk, I like the taste and besides, its also very beneficial. Here are some facts about coconut milk nutritional value and concerning calories in coconut milk. For babies of course its better to use natural coconut milk rather than store bought one that contains additives, but I don't know how the process is.
