When did you LO listen to stories?
« on: September 29, 2013, 18:06:44 pm »
At what age did you LO actually sit still when you read them story books. I have been reading my DD books before bed for quite a while but it does seem quite frutile, as she just pulls at the books while i try to read them, or tried to get up and run around. Just curious at what age do they actually sit down, relax and let you read it?

About two-ish.

And even then, not wth actual reading, but making him interact with what was displayed. "What's that? That's right, it's a cat! The cat is sleeping" etc.

J will happily sit and listen to a story now and has done for several months, but equally will have times where she just climbs around everywhere or wants to run around.  Best times for us are either when she brings me a book (so it's on her timetable, not mine) or bedtime when she expects it.

M LOVED reading stories from well before 1yo.  R was at least 2.5 before she truly starting enjoying and requesting them.  Now she loves them.

Well in our house sitting still doesnt happen much, but they have always been listening to stories regardless if they are bopping around on the bed or couch. Masyn will sit still if she is doing the reading of course and then Spencer tends to sit beside her.

Thanks ladies, DD brings them to me to read but as soon as i start she just wants to pull at the pages and throw it about. It drives me nuts, i love books i'm one of those nuts that will never crease the spine of a book so it drives me potty when she tries to crumple them  ;D.

I guess i'll just keep reading and one day she might sit still. Do you think its best to read lots of differnt stories or stick to just a couple so she starts to recognise them?

lol!!!!i had to make my peace with DD crumpling the "lift the flap" flaps in books.....it still bothers me when i come across one that i've forgotten she's bent the wrong way, but i'm learning to let go...kind of!!!!!!

DD loves the "that's not my..." series....she goes through phases of loving the feely bits, or finding the mouse on each page, or looking at the different illustrations...HTH

At that age we always read the same ones over and over for weeks! Mainly board books as they are hard to wreck...well unless your name is Spencer and you like to eat them  ::)

My younger brother was born when I was 10 and I still remember all the words to one book he loved us to read! Same with my kids favourites.

No i dont have either of those. Sounds like a shopping trip for me. I probably should read more board books, i've been reading things like. Some dogs do, Who's in the loo, A squash and a squeeze. A bit to advanced for a 13 months old, i guess it's because i prefer reading them. I must stop.

I still have the original book (Sarah and Hoppity) that my mum got for good attendance at brownies that she used to read as a child then she read to me and my sister and i plan on reading to to my DD. I can't wait until she is old enough for that one  ;D

Ds is 3yo but he would look at books when tiny baby and has been listening since very young. Dd is.a spirited monkey and does what your lo.does until.a few weeks ago she started to listen at 21 mo. Now she wants to read all the time and actually sits and listens. She wakes up every morning and Says 'books books' lol

When L was smaller, he preferred me to read my book aloud to him - he got the feeling of a story more than these little kiddie books do. He'd sit still in my general vicinity for that but never a kids book.
Only recently (almost 2.5) has he started consistently sitting still for a story (and its 10 stories :o ). He particularly likes rhyming ones like Dr Seuss.  This has coincided with him wanting to write letters and taking quite an interest in the words more so than pictures, he's never really been a picture kid. FWIW, books were too stimulating and exciting for him before sleep/BT til he was over 2yo - got his mind going and he couldn't switch off to sleep.

I would for sure invest in some board books...totally boring to read but my kids loved them and Spencer still enjoys looking at them.
