Bedtime struggles wiwo
« on: May 12, 2015, 00:14:56 am »
My 22 month old ajways goes in the crib awake and it typically takes him about 30 mins sonetimes more to fall asleep but no crying or fussing. The past two nights we put him in crib 5 mins later Hes crying hysterically. Last night we wiwo for 1.5 hours! Tonight same thing although I only had to do it for 30 mins. Not sure what's going on all of a sudden. I just go in lay him down and put my hand on his chest telling him it's ok its time for bed and I leave the room. Then when I leave the room he starts up again so I give him a minute but he doesnt calm down so I go back in again and do it all over. Any suggestions ?

Hun I think you need to look at your routine. On your last thread I said that the fact he was going to bed and lying for so long wouldn't last and he'd eventually start getting upset as he's likely bored.

I think the need for the extra A time up and about has clicked in and you either need to make bedtime later or start cutting the nap xx

I agree with PPs

We went through this (many times ::) ) with L when I couldn't believe that she could possibly be UT, but she was.  Capping the nap was what sorted out our BTs again.  (Of course, another option is later BT).

Just when I finally figured out a good naptime to get a good nap! Lol ok so should I cap nap at 1 hr say 1-2? Then a 13 hr day 7-8? Should I be putting him into crib at 8 or 730 which is what I've been doing being that it takes him 30 mins to fall asleep? Is a 13 hr day good with an hour nap?

I've always read that "Most parents find that their toddler’s natural bedtime falls sometime between 7 and 7:30 p.m." And that 10.5-11 hours is about average. He is doing about 10.5-11 hours at night and his nap is only 1 hr 15/30 mins which is not very long. Maybe U should just start with later bedtime. Putting him into his at 8 instead of 730 and starting bedime routine later at 730. Lately he always wakes up from nap nsp crying and cranky and it takes him a long time to come around so I'm worried about capping.

With L we found she got more sleep overall if we capped her nap.  Keeping a longer nap meant much shorter nights.

Having said that, many LOs don't like having their napped cap and so a shorter night works better.  Some parents also prefer a longer nap and later BT.  It can be a bit of trial and error finding what works best for you.

Maybe U should just start with later bedtime. Putting him into his at 8 instead of 730 and starting bedime routine later at 730.
Yes, this could definitely be a good place to start.

Let us know how you get on.

So how long should the nap be to keep bedtime if he's doing a 7/730-8/830 day? He wakes cranky anyway from nap now! Lol

My daughter had dropped her nap entirely by 26 months so at this stage was probably having around 45 mins. There's no magic formula, so I'd try capping at 1 hr for a week or so and sweet happens.

So would a 13 hour day be ideal with a 1 hr nap? 7 wake 1-2 nap 8 bed?

But put him into bed at 8 to be asleep by 830?
I had to wiwo today at nap time which he always goes down easily for. He was half asleep befirehand in his highchair. I did have my mother over so he might've known she was still here and didn't want to go down and the 4th time I went in he had pooped so maybe that was it but he never went to sleep! I hope this isnt a new thing at bedtime and naptime. The wiwo a million times is exhausting! Now I'm not sure what time for bed?

I'd aim for asleep at 8pm.

So put him in crib normal time at 730? Are there any other suggestions besides going in laying him back down in crib stroking his head telling him it's time for bed and repeating 10 times if necessary? I think now he knows i will come back when he cries!

That's how Wiwo goes! Remember you don't have to calm him down just reassure him that you're nearby.
