10 month old suddenly waking in the night for milk
« on: February 05, 2017, 12:24:45 pm »
Hi

I have a 10 month old who's suddenly started waking in the night and will not settle. He screams and thrashes and then we give in and feed him. We've tried to settle him for 1-2 hours before feeding him but he won't settle.

It's just been the last 1-2 weeks. Last night it was twice; midnight and 5am. If he wakes once it's usually around 4/5am.

His usual routine when not at nursery is:

7am - wake

Bottle - 6/7oz

8/8.30 - breakfast

10-11.30 - nap

11.30 - lunch

2.45-4.15 - nap

4.30/5 - dinner

6.30 - bottle, 6/7oz

Asleep by 7pm

I'm at my wits end.

He's not got a dummy. He did have between 6-9 months but then it became a hiverrbve when it dropped out and he couldn't find it so we weaned him off it.

We've started waking him by 4.30 if the second nap runs later.

No idea what to do! Help!! Thank you x

Does he have another bottle somewhere in the day?  He's quite young for just two bottles and it could be genuine hunger if that's the case.  But to consider other things - is he teething right now or is anything else going on which could be causing him discomfort?  Do any pain meds help?

The other thing I wonder about is whether he has been on this routine a while?  His A times are fairly short for 10 months and UT could be a possibility.  If none of the other things seem to apply have you thought about increasing A times to 3h15/30?

Is he an independent sleeper at bedtime?

I just noticed he's at nursery - how many days does he go and what's his sleep like there?

He is an independent sleeper. No dummy or any soft toy.

He's been on 2 bottles since 7 months and this routine probably since then too.

At nursery he has 2 naps of 45 mins!!! And he's fine there whereas at home I think he'd be a wreck!!

Today because he was awake late he's only had one nap of 3 hours from 11.15-2.15. Same as yesterday so putting him down to bed a little earlier tonight.

I think he can go longer awake but I don't think I could get two naps in if that's the case?

Thank you sooo much for helping me! X

He's had a tooth cone through today - top lateral incisor.

That could definitely explain the long wakings at night - often they have been discomfort-related here.  Let's hope now the tooth is through things ease up a bit for you :D

As A times get longer you basically choose one nap to keep long, and then gradually shorten the other.  So for example a long am routine can go up to about 4h A time:

WU 7
Nap 11-12.30/1
Catnap around 4.30/5 for 30-45 mins
BT 7/7.30

Or with a short morning nap:

WU 7
Nap 10-10.30/45
Nap 1ish-2.30/3
BT 7

Hope that's helpful!
