what GREEN finger foods to have?
« on: May 26, 2006, 13:41:23 pm »
I want my 9.5 mo lo to have some green veggies but he's kind of boycotting the pureed stuff.  How can I make peas, green beans or other green stuff into a finger food for him?  I know I can do cut up broccoli, but what else?  Any ideas?

We did a lot of steamed cut up broccoli...I'd just make up a batch and freeze it. You could also steam peas and do the same, just be sure to give them a little squish with a fork before giving them to DS to minimize the risk of choking. I had a hard time finding fresh peas when Tyler was in this phase, so I used frozen and just microwaved what I needed. You can also steam and cut up green beans or peeled asparagus, but these can be tough to chew, so you might wait until your DS is really good at finger foods. Some folks have had luck giving cooked chopped spinach as a finger food, but Tyler always had a hard time picking it up.

You can also take just about any green food, steam it, mash it, and combine it with mashed potato or mashed sweet potato. Roll them into balls and you've got finger food! You can play around with the mixture to get it how you wanted...Tyler usually liked a stiffer consistency, so I'd stir in some crushed cheerios or dry baby cereal before I rolled it into balls. You can freeze these too.

Whoops-messed that post.  Doesn't broccoli cause loads of gas?

Green beans can be held in their hands - so I'd steam those and give them - just watch for stringy bits
Cucumber chunks
Celery chunks
Courgette - cut into fingers and either steam or lightly fry

Lola-

For whatever reason, broccoli never caused gas with Tyler either. You can make just about any veggie into a finger food, just make sure it's steamed so that it's soft enough to gum. If you're ever unsure, just pop a piece into your mouth and see if you can mush it up without chewing it, since that what your LO does!

What is that?  I have never heard of it.  Are you in the U.S.?  Does it have a different name here?

Thanks for the veggie ball ideas.  I think I'll try that because he's finicky about plain potatoes but likes them mixed with other veggies.  I am also really into batch freezing because I hate thinking of something at every meal, so that will be great.

I just thought that green beans would be to hard for him.  He only has the 2 bottom teeth, but the top ones are poking out.  I'll try it though, I think he can do more than I think he can... :) :)

Courgette is the same as zucchini or summer squash.
 HTH.
Dd loves frozen peas as FF (I usually peel them for her).
I make small balls as tylersmommy, but using cream cheese instead or potato, also make a dip. Take a bread stick or a carrot, and make a chees, cream and green veggie dip. Dip anything in it.
