getting started - questions questions!
« on: May 03, 2007, 04:53:11 am »
Hi
dd is 16 weeks (so nrly 4 months). We tried EASY at around 9wks but didn't really get going on it. Shes' a bit erratic, in that she has always woken 1-2 times at night. However, she developed a cold on Friday, and everything is going downhill! She normally goes to bed at 6.30pm. Friday she was unsettled till 8.30pm, then slept till 4am, fed, and slept again till 8am. Saturday she was up several times. Sunday a couple of times to feed. Since then, although the cold has pretty much gone, she has been waking every 1-2 hours overnight, but whereas before she would settle with a fedd or dummy she now will not settle for 1.5 hours, as if it were a daytime schedule. Her daytime naps have decreased from having one longer nap or 1.5-2 hours to only sleeping 45 mins at a time. Having some success over the past couple of days extending her naps as have blacked out her room, but the night time is falling apart! SHe is sleeping maybe 4-5 hours at most during the day. Feeding around 3 hourly. To compicate things I have just gone back to work this week, 2 mornings a week, and she is reluctant to take more than about 80-100 ml from the bottle for the feed when I am gone.
o compound things, my milk supply seems to be low, I am pumping to help it along, but whereas before I would have 100 mls in a matter of minutes from a single breast, I can struggle to get 50 mls from both.
Normally she is easy to get down for her sleeps, during the day and at bedtime, and although she has a dummy she spits it out once she falls asleep, and doesn't seem to be waking to look for it.

I want to get started on EASY, but not sure she is quite ready for the 4hour EASY. I think she's over her cold, so ready to get started. I am also wondering if this could be a growth spurt, and whether 4 hour EASY may then result in more night wakings. ALso if my supply is low, is starting 4 hours EASY a good idea? Finally, should we ditch the dummy, as it is v useful in getting her to fall asleep for her naps, and for extneding the daytime naps. I am also happier using it at night to try to avoid the feed-to-sleep association.

Hi there,
if you are not sure about 4 hours EASY, you could always start with 3.5 hour EASY.
Also from my experience, routine did not happen overnight, but took some time to get used to.Other thing what you could do is do clusterfeed at night to fill her up before night.
If you feel your supply is low, do you want to pop over to breastfeed section, lots of useful info there.
What routine is going on right now fo her? It would be good starting point to start EASY as you wont want too much change at once.

Ditto to what Efka said. A 4 hour EASY requires a baby to be able to stay awake for 2 hours. That is a long time for LOs. Try the 3.5 and see how it goes. It does take some time to adjust to a new routine, with a baby of 4 months, about 2 weeks give or take. Be patient and consistent and the routine will take shape.

Hello. :D  Here are some links to some really great info on our EASY FAC (Frequently Asked Questions) area.  These may be able to give you some additional incite as well.

****MY lo didn't move over to a 4 hours EASY until she was almost 5 months old.  Every baby is different as you know so it's mostly about following your lo's cues and figure out what will work best for her.  Mine jumped straight from 3 to a 4 hour EASY in one day and totally skipped 3.5 hour EASY.  I think that also depends on the temperment of the child and what they are ready for you.  You are doing great!

You may also want to visit our breastfeeding thread as they may be able to help you answer your supply questions, etc.  (https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=12.0)

Thanks! Made a start. She stays awake for 11/2 to 2 hours, but the feeding is the thing - she seems to want to feed more often. fortunately my milk is back up as have had some sleep - only feed from one side most of the time so have the second to offer if i need to. anyhow, we are making ok progress with 3.5 hour easy, thought i would try this first till she is used to it, and napping for longer. It is a bit awkward as it doesn't fit into the 12 hour day like the 3 or 4 hour one does though, and dd wakes at 6.30-7am ish, and is asleep by 6.30pm. SO tending to go 3hourly, and then cluster the last feed. cheers, off to find out what to do about PU/ pd with dummy vs losing dummy (with shich i am able to get her off to sleep in minutes, and also extend naps most of the time!)
