Hi Everyone  ;D

My beautiful baby boy is 6 1/2 months old, and has been on solids since about 5 months.  He is still on four hourly breast feed, and he has solids twice a day, around lunch time, and tea time.

My question is... should he be getting fed four hourly (6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm - usually he gets fed around 4.30pm also, before his solids).

He also wakes once or twice in the night, and I usually feed him then too.

I have had a look in the forums to see if there is anything on routines for a 6 1/2 month old, but haven't seen anything as yet.  I just don't know if I am feeding him too much, or if he can go 5 hours between feed during the day, so getting 6am, 11am, 4pm kind thing????

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers
Michelle ;D

I don't think a 6.5 month old should be going more than 4 hours between feeds.  Until 9 months or so, the bulk of a baby's food intake should be milk, and it should still be quite a chunk even after that, up to a year.

My 7 month old still nurses every 3 to 4 hours, and usually once or even twice a night.  Her older sister did, too.  It wasn't until 9 months that my DD1 went 5 hours between BFings, and stopped night nursing (with a little encouragement from me and help from DH).

Hi Sabrina

Thanks so much for replying.  I am totally more comfortable with continuing breastfeeding every 3-4 hours.  It makes more sense to me, but I just wanted to know what other people thought.  I might stick to giving him solids only twice a day, and not introduce "breakfast" until 9 months or so.

Thanks for your help~~  ;D  It is much appreciated!!!

I am also still breastfeeding my 7.5 month old every 4 hours or so and slotting in solids around that.  We've been steadily increasing her solids since we began at 6 months, but as Sabrina said, breast milk is still the bulk of her intake at this point.

Here are some links to topics about sample routines for 6 - 12 months:
