When did you switch LO to low fat milk?
« on: November 11, 2010, 19:51:19 pm »
Here we have homo (whole), 2%, 1% and skim (no fat)

We were told whole milk for Finn...but not for how long?  He's quite a solid little lad, don't think he's having any issues lol

When (and if) did you move LO to a lower fat milk?

As far as I know the calcium content is the same in the different types, it's just the fats that are different?

I am pretty sure that in Canada the recommendation is whole milk until they are two, then to switch to lower fats unless they still need that little bit extra in their diet.

Yup, they are supposed to be on whole milk until 2 (and it is just because of the fat content),  I used to love borrowing a bit of Masyn's milk for hot chocolate...so creamy!  Too bad Spencer is on soy!

Just spoke to our clinic who said he can change at any time now.  Interesting.  I think it's really dependent on the kid.

Funny enough there was an article on yahoo today saying that kids should be able to switch after age 2, and that it was recommended to do so unless they have a specified reason to stay on whole. I guess your health professional would know better though :)

I've always understood that it's at least 2 b/c they need the fat, specifically for brain development.

Nathan is roughly the same size as Finn I think (89 cm tall, 30 pounds). I asked about this at his 18 month checkup a few weeks ago and the doc said 2 yrs. He was pretty firm on it. So... maybe it depends more on the doc than the kid??

Why are you thinking of switching?

(And Heidi, I use N's milk in my coffee as well... it really is like cream!)

Why are you thinking of switching?

Because we have to buy 3 different milks in our house.  Tom refuses to have low fat so he wants 2%, Finn is on 3.25% and I need to be on skim.  Adults do not need the fats, I have been reading up on it and the amount of calories and fat content in full fat milk is astonishing.  I need to be creative with calories lol

Tom has been drinking the 3.25% but I think it would be better if he moved away from that, he drinks a TON of milk plus uses it in tea.

I trust our doc and also remember now that the dietician said something similar before she left.

Gotcha. One option would be to mix the 2% and the whole milk for a while, to wean him off the fatty stuff slowly. But if your doctor said it was ok, then go for it!

I watch Scott's fat intake a lot, as well. Sigh.

We are still on full-fat everything at 5, 9, and two 45-YO's. I buy full-fat milk to make our yogurt, and I add fish oil to it when I dish it up! :D

And actually, we DO need (some good) fats in our diet because without them our metabolism tries to slow down making weight loss MORE difficult. [Caveat: this is a controversial subject; this is one link for information but not the same as medical advice: http://www.eatfatlosefat.com/research.php.]

I'm pretty sure here in England they recommend they are on full fat until 5. My 5 year old is still on full fat but he's on the 9th centile for weight so try to fatten him up any way I can!
