Wendy I switched DD to semi skimmed (I *think* that's equivalent to your 2% ???) shortly before she was 2, basically because I'm not at all worried about her fat and calcium intake and it was easier to just buy the semi and my rice milk as opposed to full fat as-well, and she doesn't notice the difference in taste :)

I'll think about it I guess.  Not in a rush but just a note to said husband: I don't want to hear any complaints about a 'milk belly' when you get one.  He's pretty much swapped beer for milk lol

At least he's getting calcium from the milk...my DH will only drink chocolate milk.

I was told it should be whole milk until 2yo, then they CAN (don't have to) switch to semi-skimmed until 5yo and then they CAN switch again to skimmed after 5yo.
Apart from the fat though I think it is also to do with the higher quantities of fat soluable nutrients that are in milks with higher fat contents.
If you put half water and half whole milk would that be the same as semi -skimmed?

Actually thinking about it, he doesn't drink much milk at all.  He will sip through his sippy cup and that's all.  Must move more to an open cup I think then he'll take more.  The only real milk of value he is getting is in his bottle - we've cut back to 4 oz at bedtime because he was just dawdling to drink it.  He's getting really skilled at open cup with water, must get brave to try it with milk lol

So that means I should stick with the 3.25 I guess until he's taking more volume.

I just had a thread on this same thing before DD turned 2. Ped. at her check up ended up telling me to switch her to a lower fat milk of our choice but to take her off the whole now that she is 2. I inquired if skim was okay b/c DH and I drink skim and preferred to buy just one container of milk for the household and she said that if she'd drink it then it was great as a lot of kids won't drink it b/c they prefer the creamier texture of whole milk. She drinks any percentage just fine so we use skim at home and where I babysit they use whole and she'll drink either as if it was the same.

Wendy, M is on a rice milk, but up until 2, we added coconut  milk to it for fat.  Our ped said at 2, they want less fat in the milk, so now he just gets rice milk.  Not that you have these issues, but my cousin's ped actually made him switch to skim, since he was too big for his age.  For an adult trying to lose weight, cutting to skim or low fat milk is a good idea.  Deb is right that you need fat for metabolism and hormone production.  But it shouldn't come from saturated fat that is in whole milk.  Stick to the PB. ;)

This morning I let him have an open cup for milk - and before daycare, how brave am I lol  A clothes change would have meant missing my train.

Yet he did very well, when he did spill it he told me about it, and he did put some of his Shreddies in the cup, and then said 'uh oh, oh no' and came and got me.  I had to keep reminding him that 'milk is for drinking and we only have drinks in our cup' 'cereal is for eating and stays in the bowl' lol

But last night he got open cup with dinner and guzzled a bunch of water.  I really do think my kid is dehydrated a lot of the time...he must find the sippy cups hard work.  Now his dexterity is better I think we're going open cup and sippy when travelling.

But that's a digression from my thread - really it means that when he's taking more milk on a regular basis I will feel more comfortable switching to one with less fat.  I think I'll leave him on 2% with DH and then eventually they can move to the fine-filtered 1% which really tastes like 2%.  And I'm fine with my skim milk.

We have taken the valves out of the sippies because M likes to guzzle.  The only reason we don't do an open cup, is because he also likes to throw. ::)

That was my reasoning as well - but then after waiting and waiting, I just switched to semi skimmed anyway and that in itself made him drink more.  There are fewer calories in a cup of semi skimmed than in whole fat milk, so that in itself made him "hungrier" for it.

Just as an aside Wendy...why not a straw sippy? Spencer stopped drinking from her reg. sippy and we finally figured out it was because it was too much work!  She loves her straw one.
