help! 9 week old waking up after 5 min
« on: June 15, 2012, 12:14:31 pm »
Hi all,

We're on a 2.5-3 hr EASY, starting from 7-8 am. Not terribly regular but roughly ok throughout three day until late afternoon. This changed lately as DD started to wake up a few min after she's fallen asleep. She can usually be settled down after 10 min or so, only to wake up again in 5 min.

this can go on for ages until she gets hungry and after feed the whole thing starts again!

Help! ! Thanks

All naps unfortunately. First nap used to be the best, but only 35 min today. Won't resettle either. Naps get worse later on in the day . Never managed to nap after 4 pm either as she really fights it until bed time 18-19.

A time typically 1 hr 15-45, depends on how much she wakes after 2 min of eyes closed etc. she yawns after about 35 min, and we go to nursery and read a story or sing lullaby, while she's in her cot, then sometimes she needs to be picked up, sometimes just sh pat.
Thanks!

I would try pulling back that first A time closer to 1 hr and see if she sleeps past 35 mins. At this age my guess wold be OT rather than UT...or possibly discomfort of some sort ie wind/gas/reflux. Do you notice any discomfort on her part?

Not sure about discomfort. She doesn't draw her legs up. She had lots of hiccups, and used to grunt a lot while sleeping. We've propped the head end of mattress up a little and she seemed to be better. We were thinking about reflux, but she is not very sickly. So I don't know really.

Will try with shorter A time. things went wrong after her first jab, hope it will all improve soon. Sigh. Thank you very much for your advice, will let you know how we get on.

Silent refluxers don't spit up much - some not at all. It is more like heartburn, acid pain where the milk and stomach acid comes partway up the throat causing discomfort.

Here is some info on reflux just to keep at the back of your mind. Also strong fast flow if your BF can cause discomfort. Are you BF or formula?

She refused to sleep at first A....ended up being 1 hr 40. She looked tired after feed so I put her down but she woke up 5 min later, smiling, babbling, kicking, eyes wide open.. Unsuccessful! At least she was happy for the entirety of this rather long A.

Will see how the rest of the day go. This is sooooo hard!

What time did you try for that at first A? They really wake up around this age don't they ;)
Where is the nap being offered? - have you tried a dark room, white noise. Is your LO swaddled? Can You get a nap in the car, or swing, or pram?

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply.  HV doesn't think she has reflux... oh well.  She's BF, and refusing EBM in bottles at the moment... she's a trouble maker...

A usual day goes like?

E: 5:30am
S: til about 6:45
E: 7am
A: til about 8:30-  9
S: til about 10:15, depends....

E: at about 10:30-45
A; til about 12 or depends on how long the battle to sleep last for...
S: from 11:30 or 12 or whenever she agrees to sleep but there about to about 1:30, 2 on a good day

E: 2 ish
A: til about 3:30 ish
S: hit and miss!  some days she'll nap and some days she'll refuse (but actually the days she kicked up a real fuss were the couple of days after her jab so.... maybe that's why?)

E at about 4pm
then this bit is really hard as i dont' want her to sleep from 5pm, because then she gets up at 7pm wanting to play a bit.  I don't know how to stretch this bit.  If she naps then she won't go to bed until 8:30pm!  We usually end up stretching the A til about 5:45pm, and she gets a bit OT and cranky.

Dream feed at 10:30pm ish, but she's been refusing and we had to put it back to 11pm,
then wakes up at about 3:15am for feed, and then again at 5:30am (not sure why she needs this, I tried to settle her without feeding without success).  Both these feeds are quite reasonable length and draining 1 breast reasonably well.  And then the day starts again....

The naps are always offered in her nursery, blinds drawn etc.  she doesn't wind down well at all.  She won't sit still/lie on shoulder until she's just about falling asleep, unless I pace up and down the room/rock her slightly.  She'll kick and babble etc.  She doesn't like swaddling unless she's really tired, probably because we stopped swaddling after she's a couple of weeks' old.  We still swaddle her arm occasionally when she's really OT and impossible to settle.

The first A is usually spent in our bedroom, talking and babbling and smiling with DH before he goes to work for about 15 min, and lying next to me babbling at the curtain while I'm trying not to dose off and failing....

Sorry for going on and on.  She does this wake up after 5 min thing now only a few times for naps, so it's a bit more manageable, but I'd still like to know whether there's anything i can do to stop her from doing that.... But also would really like some help about what to do with the evening bit of EASY as it's quite stressful every day.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions so far - it's really really helpful!

I think your first A is too long so she is OT by the time you PD for the nap :-\
Have you tried to PD after 1hr15 or so and see if she settles easier? Or is the S when she finally gets to sleep after trying for 30 mins or so?
Have you tried offering a CN in the early evening - A 30min nap or so to tide over till BT. Usually the A after a CN is about 45mins at this age so just enough time for Bt routine, feed etc.

Does she respond to patting or shhing? Or both?
Your not going on and on! Its so tough when they are so little. What is she like when she wakes after 5 mins, are you sure she is asleep?

Hi thanks!

.
The first A includes at least 30 min wind down and ssh pat, pick up etc.

she responds tossh pat sometimes. If not I pick her up for a bit then down again.

The problem with the last nap is usually that by the time she falls asleep, we've spent so long trying, it's really late, if that makes sense.

I think she is asleep, her eyes closed, breathing slowed, and not moving/squirming like just before she drops off.

I still feel it could be discomfort...
HV doesn't think she has reflux... oh well.
Can I ask why? Im not saying it 'is' reflux but it seems like something is going on....
How are her poops?
How is she after feeds with wind?

I don't know. She doesn't scream all the time and is otherwise happy with feed, gaining weight well. Burps ok after and mid feed. does have some poo stain on wet nappies so I'm guessing that's wind?

She seems better yesterday, so fingers crossed!

Have you noticed if she is doing the 5min WU into a nap when she had a bit more stimulation on her A? For example, is it that she does this after you have been out, or she was on a bouncer or there was music around?
About your evenings, I wouldn't let her have such a long stretch and you could try, like Sara suggested to have a short CN there, you don't need to offer her a full nap.
I am not sure this is the case with you, but I still think it's worth a try: My DS was quite sensitive when he was that young and he just couldn't have a WD, it stimulated him too much, but when I put him in his cot and shh/pat him for a few minutes he was fine with that. He is still like this, actually, no WD whatsoever :)

Is it possible for you to post a day in an EASY format, but a specific day, yesterday or today - with the exact times thing happened. That could give us some more information.

Hi

Thanks! I haven't noticed any pattern. What I did over the last couple of days is to sit beside the cot  for 15 min, then I can get the ssh pat in before she goes off completely.

Ok today was a bit messed up as we had to go out. But here it guess, she didn't nap well but went down ok at bed time.
