just sleep please
« on: February 01, 2013, 13:39:29 pm »
M is 20 months. Her sleep atm is awful.
I am wondering if it is canines but cannot see an actual tooth. Problem is naps have never been great and nights are ok (the odd 4am crying wake up which can go on for up to an hour) but generally ok but she is just not sleeping enough...what can I do.
Today she has napped for an hour and last night was 11 hours but fought BT. I know she must be OT but BT earlier than 6pm is not an option. I can handle short naps and i can handle short nights but not both at the same time. Fed.Up.
Her normal routine is

A - 6am ish - on a good day more like 6.20pm and a bad day anytime from 5.30am
Nap - 12pm - anywhere from 1-1.5 hours
BT - anywhere from 6-7pm depending on the nap.
I was advised to push the nap to 12.30pm but from a 6am wake up I am just not sure. When I do push her we get short naps or fighting naps.

I guess i could be teeth but I need a plan someone please. We are all tired. She was up at 5.40am today and only napped an hour. :(

Sorry, no plan, just hugs. I thought that we were doing better, but x was up 11 times between 11 and 6 last night! ::)

Have you tried giving her meds before naps and bedtime to see if it helps?

Hugs Becky.

I was going to ask about meds too, but also, what is her mood when she wakes from her nap? How would you feel about pushing the nap back slowly towards 12.30 & see how you do after a week or two. I know your not sure she will make it, but I suppose my thinking is if her naps are bad anyway it might be worth seeing if it makes any difference iykwim. What do you think?

Sending lots of hugs xx
Do you struggle to get to a 12 nap? Does she wake herself up? Maybe if she is up early you need an earlier nap. I know when my LO is up early he is desperate by 12 and often goes down earlier as he stands at the bottom of the stairs crying!!

thanks clare...have not tried meds, have in the past for naps and seem to make no difference but might try again. This is all just getting old but you know that ;)

Naomi - I could push her to 12.30pm and I guess that should be my plan, I just feel I am pushing her so much anyway and if she short naps then I wonder if she is just more OT because of the long am. What do you think?

Clare - No we don't struggle really. She is quite happy enough, I know she is tired but she never gets upset or anything. I would rather not pull the nap back because it is so much further to BT and she has never been a great napper.

Who really knows..ho hum.

Hugs, Becky.  Have you tried 12:15 nap? Or 11:45? I mean just 15 mins to try.  I remember those days just too clearly!!!  We are having the same right now!  Xx

yes Koe - tried both! I really have accepted she is not going to do consistent good naps. I just can't accept bad naps and mornings that start before 6am ;(

(((Hugs))) Becky is she still suffering with her cough?  If earlier BT not an option and you don't want to move nap earlier, not sure you have any option other than to try a later nap?  Not really much else routine-wise to change!  Are you ever able to resettle (even if means you lying on floor in her room or similar)?  I guess if you chance it and push her to 12.30, even if she only does an hour you can do a 6pm BT which is a short pm A and should avoid the OT at BT?

Hi katherine,
Cough is much better thanks. She is impossible to resettle which is so frustrating. I used to be able to settle DS but not her. I have tried going in quickly and also leaving her to see if she will do it but no. She gets upset and then I go in and reassure her and sit in her room in the dark so at least she is resting. She sat up today and whispered 'hello' through the cot bars which was quite cute and then tried to talk to me about the dark and 'night nights'. ....sigh. cute but sigh.
She has had a language explosion in the last couple of weeks but still.

An earlier BT than 6pm is really hard here.
I guess it will have to be a 12.30pm nap then.

I was absolutely convinced that x would never give me a decent nap but he has been doing a consistent 2h nap for a few weeks now - maybe she will just get to a developmental point where she can do it, which I think is what happened with x. I doubt that the language explosion is helping matters, though - we have had lots of problems with developmental waking which you do just have to live through.

I agree with Katherine, if you've tried everything else then a 12.30 nap is worth a shot. e often short naps but at least with her nap at 12.30 it's not too long to BT which seems to work here. I know what you mean though, I can cope with short naps but only when night sleep is ok. ((Hugs))

yes but is she up at 6am..or sometimes earlier??

I got her down for 6.10pm but have just heard her now at 6.25pm. Oh well, if it is this bad it is just up to her to wait until the OT breaks I guess. Exhausting.

rough isn't it...hugs to you. I feel as if it is never ending tbh. We struggled with 2:1 for ages, then had 2 weeks of amazing sleep which turned out to be a growth spurt, then everything went bad again and we have just had constant illness and rough sleep. Boo. Hope j sleeps well for you x
