so good not to feel alone! Lets be a little support group for each other, okay?
Elliot sure is tired after an hour and 1/2, but we are keeping him up and not overstimulating him. It takes a lot of carrying and walking around with him, but its working. He goes down fine and his naps are longer.
Today all his feeds were 4 hrs apart, one was 3.5 which is fine. I just pray he has a good feed before bed and also the dreamfeed :o

Since I have started this I thought elliot drank 3oz a feeding....but now I am seeing its really like 6 or 7. I am praying that tonight be the first night he does well!!

Charlie - they CAN stay up longer!! I am witness to this!! :) :)

just to add my two cents here - u may want to try cluster feeding but i personally wouldn't at this time.  just something else you have to 'undo' sooner than later anyway.  how are things coming along??

he woke last night - about 4 times....I tried to feed him once but he wasnt interested, so he didnt eat after his DF....
This morning he took 5oz at 7 and 7oz at 11
I noticed one time when he woke he was hot and felt sweaty....so I unswaddled, lowered the heat and had him in only a Tshirt. I think this is another reason why he wakes at night!

during the day, Its still a struggle to keep him up though. He gets tired so fast. Also my husband never gets to see him, no matter what I do I cant seem him to get him to stay up later than 6:30. I would love a 7:30 bedtime. Even 7:00

Thanks.....
I was hoping that once he gets better at 4 hour EASY he may be able to stay up just a 1/2 hour later....
Right now he doesnt quite take 2 hour naps...and he cant quite go 4 hours between feedings. Just now he was crying at 3.5 hours....

Maybe once he solidly has the 4 down he can stay up a little later because his naps will be longer??

I get tears now just thinking about it...
Saturday morning my husband saw elliot and smiled...and then started to tear up because he doesnt get to see him. He said "I miss him so much"
Even if he would just stay up 15 minutes later my husband could give him his bottle :'(
Thank you again for your encouragement. Elliot is a great napper. I am lucky in that.

Wonderful to find some common scenario's amongst our 3-4 month old's.  My daughter has been a great sleeper and very settled child ( my second ) since early on.  Has slept through from 7:7:30pm to 6-7am for a while now, although the last 3 nights I am up every 3 hours.  I am now up at 3:45am after another waking and feed looking for some inspiration and other views from Mums.  I thought the wakings was leading up to the move towards solids, as I had my first one on solids by 4 months.  I am still breastfeeding completely and was sure that part of this was due to not being satisfied after feeding, although after reading views may consider trying to reduce a few sleeps during the day.  At the moment she would sleep 4-5 hours a day, plus I expected her sleeping through as noted above. Born 9 pounds and very good feeder, although I am feeling very drained ( as we all know ) after a constant feed fest before the day has begun.  It seems that 3-4 months also may be a consdierable growth stage for the babes, as they are wanting to be more active, although can't get anywhere ??? Instead of putting her down for what I thought was a sleep during the day when she was niggling, perhaps just bored and needs to need another activity instead. Anyhow a number of great comments to help me with and appreciated the fact that others were in the same boat - great forum !!!
Thank you !

The only thing that confuses me about the naps is that in BW it seems that babies this age should get about 4 or 5 hours of sleep during the day so your baby seems to be on track?
Thoughts anyone?

Thanks Stacy- that is very helpful info. for me. :) I appreciate you being so specific. I"m also glad to know how long it took you to
transition to 4 hour EASY. I was kind of hoping to do it in 2 weeks ( My son is 19 weeks). I wasn't sure if that was realistic or not. So far
he has done better than I expected at extending, but I"m sure there will be bumps ..ha! I would just love a good long stretch at night !

Hi everyone

Here is an update on the things I have tried. We are successfully moving to a 4 hour easy and I can now keep him up for nearly 2 hours. He does sometimes wake 15 mins before a feed. His consumption has gone up to 7-8 oz per feed as a result so over 5 feeds he's taking 35 oz ish, which for a 14lb 3 month 3 week old is plenty. But he does still get those 5 feeds in 12 hours at 6, 10, 2, 4.30 and 6.30. I re-read Tracey's book on growth spurts in the fourth month and figured it was that so decided the last three nights to add back in a dream feed at 10pm. He would not take more than 3 oz and it made no difference to the night wakings. So I'm not going to bother with the dreamfeed and see what happens.

He wakes erratically through the night, usually about 4-5 times. Only 2 of these do I need to go in and tuck him in. He's waking early at 5.30am for a 'power poo'  :). So clearly he's getting through his food quickly. I suppose this doesn't seem too bad when I read the nightmares others are having, but for a baby who always slept soundly it's a new experience.

We bought a sleeping bag, which was a success, so I can be confident coldness is not issue. I lightly swaddle his top half, but he seems happy not being swaddled anymore.

He's still a good napper, taking 2 x 2hour naps and 1 45 minute nap per day.

I have raised his mattress and give him antacids in his last bottle but this hasn't changed the nightwaking.

I was interested by the post on getting ready for solids, as he constantly chews his hand before, during and in between feeds while awake.

I just wish I knew what the night wakings were about.

Jo

Re: Sudden night wakings - at 3 .....solids expansion
« Reply #24 on: March 26, 2006, 13:33:47 pm »
I have continued the EASY with both of my girls and as mentioned in a previous post and completely believe it works fabulously. My second who is now coming up to 4 months in 1 week's time has been waking at night after sleeping from 8am - 6am at 8 weeks to waking sometimes twice each night. I remember from my first this happened at a similar time.  As we have all agreed a complex stage, with increased activity, demand for more milk and change in naps.  All of this is happening with me and I am trying to work through it as much as I can.  Although I will expand on further my experience introducing solids at 4 months with my first.  Both of my girls were born 9 pound and continue to sit on the 91st percentile in weight ( I make this comment as I am not sure this impacts the need for more food or not ) and have found that by 4 months that the milk was not satisfying them enough.  I know that the recommended time solids are introduced varies in every country between 4-6 months. Although my personal feeling was that my baby was ready to move on at this time, as the night wakings were out of the ordinary, she was interested food when others were eating around her and even when my milk supply adapted to the increase in demand, it felt like she still looking for something else.  You can call me impatient maybe, but I felt I had nothing to lose by introducing a small amount of baby rice with milk and see what she thought.  We were living in the UK at the time and my health nurse encouraged it when I discussed it with her, as long as the milk feeds were not going to reduce.  Anyhow, we never looked back. I continued the EASY 4 hour and introduced the solid, which she loved like chocolate, slept through the night again and we continued on.  Obviously this is just my own experience, and everyone has their own preference. But after going with what I honestly felt my daughter was telling me, I went with my instinct, she was happy and so was I, as I got my night's sleep back again.

Hi,
My son has just turned 5mos. And the last night was the 3rd in a row he woke many times. He sleeps about 14hrs in total (about 10 at night). You have written above about shorten naps. And my question is how to do this? Should I wake him?
Thank you in advance

Again me :) How did you shorten naps? You sat in a chair with a watch and after an hour you said "enough" and woke you baby? Here's my routine. What do you suggest? He wakes up about 6.00-6.45. And here's his routine (let's say he wakes at 6.30):
6.30 wake
E: 7.00 bf
A
S 8.30-10.10 (about 1h 40)
A
E 11.00 bf
A
S 12.30-14.15 (about 1h 50')
E 14.30 bf
A
S 16.30-17.30 (about 50')
E 18.00 bf
A 19.30  bath
E 19.50 bf
20.00 put in bed
One more thing: if his first nap is shorter (eg.45') the second one is longer (2h 30'). So he usually sleeps during the day over 4hrs.

Hi All,

I am having a similar problem with my almost 4 month old.  We started the EASY routine from the get go with him and by 8 weeks he was sleeping 8 to 9 hours a night.  Around 12 weeks he started waking again once a night (sleeping only a 6 hour block) very hungry.  The problem is that if we do feed him at night, he is completely uninterested in his feedings in the morning.   I am having a very hard time getting him to eat a complete feeding during the day (6 to 7 oz).  Instead, he will nibble and take more like 4-5 oz.  We've tried the DF but have had little success with this.  He just isn't interested.  A couple of nights, I tried the pacifier when he woke up and it seemed to satisfy him, but he would not fall back asleep and as soon as the pacifier would fall out of his mouth, he would begin to fuss again.  After being awake 2 to 3 hours in the night for several nights, I gave this up.  He does seem to be moving pretty well into a 4 hour routine during the day and is able to stay awake for about 2 hours.  His schedule is a little more erratic than my other kids were only because we are out and about more taking people to school etc.  Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!!!

Mom of three (4, 2 and 4 mos)  :)

Aaahhhh - i'm joining this support group!  My son just turned 12 weeks and has started waking 3 times a night, whereas at about 9 weeks he started sleeping through without a dream feed until 3-4am and then again until the morning.  He goes to bed between 7:30 and 8:00 and wakes up at 7:00.  He has suddenly started taking a full feed at 11:30-12:30 at night (haven't been able to get him to take a dreamfeed), wakes up at 3am but puts himself back to sleep after a while, then wakes between 4 and 5 am for a feed.  I thought this change may have been due to a growth spurt last week or the fact that he had a bad cold and cough but things seem to be getting worse, not better!  Before the growth spurt and cold he had about a week straight of 2 two hour naps and one 45 minute cat nap so I thought he was putting himself into 4 hour EASY but now he is eating every 3 hours again and taking shorter daytime naps (first one is 1.5 hours, then 3 45min naps).  Do you think I should be taking the initiative to move him gradually to 4 hour EASY?

As I see I'm not alone with that problem.  :-\
Stacy, these wakings are new, I mean the number of them: 7-12. He used to wake only twice for feeding. Besides sometimes I heard his voice, so I gave him a paci and he fell asleep. I dont't df.
This night he woke "only" 4 times: 2 times he wanted to eat, 3rd - he slept after shhh, 4th - he stayed awake from 00.30 til 2.15 :( And it seemed like he was having a good time. At first I hoped he would settle, but he didn't. About 1.00 (the previous feed was an hour earlier) I tried to feed him but he wasn't interested. He talked to himself, observed the room, etc (he was in a cot all the time). Like A time or so :( I hoped he would sleep longer, but he woke at 6.00 as usual.
Maybe I must accept this situation  ??? but I'm not pleased with that.
