Thank you for the finger food advice.  I have tried pasta and they do like it.  I'll give rice, toast and other stuff a try since they should be able to do it even without teeth.

Funny that they were born the day after Rosie.  They were actually supposed to be born on Dec. 12, as I was induced that day, but my body didn't take to it.  Guess they wanted one more day inside mommy!

Oh fun! I'm always looking too for interesting foods for DS...any suggestions v. welcome!

6:30 wake and 8 oz (1/2 Similac, 1/2 whole milk - organic)
8:15 breakfast 1/2 whole grain waffle, like Kashi, or peice wheat toast with cream cheese, fruit chunks, like bananna or plum. Sippy whole milk.
10:30 7 oz 1/2 and 1/2 as above
12/12:30 lunch protein like turkey meatballs I make, or Bell and Evans chicken burger, sliced low sodium turkey, peices of goat cheese...fruit like the other half of whatever fruit I cut up for breakfast! Sippy diluted pear juice.
3:30/4 7 oz and teeting biscut like Zwiebak, or handful cheerios, handful cut up grapes (LOVES them...)
5:30 dinner - protein like tofu chunks, whole wheat pasta of some kind, green veggie like broccoli, peas, asparagus, sippy water.
7:15 bed time bottle offer 8 oz, sometimes finishes sometimes not.

Hi, I just wanted to say my LO was born Dec 14.  I was actually induced on the 13th but my body didn't take either.  The funny part is LO's personality is still as stubborn today as she was on her birthday.

Regarding the topic of the board, I've noticed the past 2 weeks or so that our routine has finally plateaued into a schedule.  LO eats at noon and somewhere between 4 and 5 for dinner (we're still figuring that part out).  We'll give her fruit or cheerios to snack on in between if she seems hungry, we've also added the sippy cup for snack time and that has become routine as well.  Sometimes she just plays with it, sometimes she points to it and actually wants a drink, whatever the case she knows what it is and I'm hoping it will help weening the bottle in a few months easier.

Happy November everyone, its good to see the boards back up!

we went straight to sippy cup without bottles, and now have only 2 breastfeeds a day with some milk in the sippy and juice in the sippy as well. it's great  that she's so good about it.

anyone having problems or issues with self feeding (spoon)? rosie isn't showing any inclination that way at all, and I'm wondering when that's meant to start etc?

My LO isn't at all interested in the spoon either -- but she'll pick foods up and eat them like cheerios and sometimes even lint off the couch if I don't catch her first!  Eeek!  ;)

Ok - I need to know if DS is getting TOO much milk through the day!  I have been bfing but over the past month have weaned to only 2.   He is 10 months old on the nose:
7am wake and bf
8am - 3tbsp cereal (dry, then mixed with water), 1/3 carton of yogurt, 2 cubes of fruit plus a handful of cheerios before he starts his meal and a few tbsp of chopped fruit at the end (kiwi, pineapple, grapes, banana, he'll eat any kind of fruit, lol!)
1130am - bottle, 8oz formula (usually takes 6-8oz of it)
1230pm - 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich or about 15 whole wheat pasta noodles with melted cheese, 3or 4 green beans and a few tbsp of peas or carrots, a tbsp or two of chopped meat, a few tbsp of chopped fruit and puffs or a baby mum mum.
2:30pm - 8 oz bottle before his nap, taking at least 6 oz of it most days (this is a new development and where I'm wondering if he needs less milk and more solids - he used to take this bottle after his nap but now wants it before!)
5:00pm - similar meal to lunch
7:00pm - bf

I notice many of you are doing snacks and only 2 milk feeds by now.  advice?

no that's probably about as much milk as rosie is getting.  actually though she doesn't have as much milk at snack times as him though. she gets a BF morning (7am) and night (7pm), and dairy produce as part of her 3 meals, but at snack times she gets about 3-4oz of milk. she has the first milk before her morning nap and the second one after the afternoon nap.

That makes me feel a bit better.  I'm starting to think that I'm not giving out as much milk at the bfs now that I have been on two for a few weeks.  That may explain why he suddenly takes so much at the snacks.  I always offer 8 oz then and he usually takes 7oz, occasionally a bit less or more.  He gets his first bottle after his morning nap but a little snack of some water and puffs before the nap and then the second bottle comes after his second nap but again he gets a tiny snack to hold him over through it.  He also has some other dairy through the day with yogurt, cheese and sometimes a bit of cottage cheese.

Hi, I've been reading through all the posts trying to get ideas on what I should be feeding my almost 11 mo old dd... I've got lots of good ideas, thanks.  My question is that it seems like they're forever either taking a bottle or eating... do you all do both of those things in the high chair?  Currently I put her in the high chair for her bottle, and again for any solids, but it seems like I'm forever strapping her in and I don't think she likes it very much and that may be why she doesn't want to eat much.  She loves to crawl around and I know she doesn't want to spend her time in the chair... advice please.  Also I guess I'm stuck on the 4 hour EASY and 4 x 8oz bottles a day but I think I should be cutting that down?  Any advice on how I should be doing that?  We've been having night wakings and I'm beginning to think it's her food intake causing them and not insufficient or bad naps as I had originally thought.

I can't really give you any advice on how much milk.  Ds is a tad over 10 months and getting a 7am and 7pm bf and then an 8oz bottle at about 1130am and 4pm.  He usually takes at least 6oz from those two bottles but I can tell my bf supply is starting to diminish so I am going to replace the 7am with a bottle ASAP - was planning to do it this morning but with teething he woke up at 5:15 crying and crying so I caved and soothed him with a bf - what can you do, lol!
I only use the high chair for solids.  I give his bottle in my lap.  That being said, some people I know give it in the highchair, too.  I think it is more what works best for your lo or what they will tolerate.

Hi Jenna's mom!
My 11.5 month old still drinks 4 bottles/day, but he's a pretty good eater as far as solids go. At the beginning of the month though, I did cut his 2 day time bottles back to 6 oz, and add an afternoon snack of crackers, or some other carb. Bottles are always in my lap, but he holds it (took several weeks of coaxing on that) Day goes something like this:

Early bottle 7-8 oz upon waking
8 am breakfast of finger foods: whole grain carb, protien and fruit, with sippy of H20 - he just drinks what he wants, maybe 1 oz MAX.
1045 bottle after nap - 6 oz
12 lunch of ff: same as breakfast sub veg. for fruit, sometimes
330 bottle after nap - 6 oz + snack (grahm cracker, or whole wheat crackers, sometimes a zwieback)
530 dinner of ff: same as lunch, with fruit, sippy cow's milk
About an hour after dinner I'll offer him some H20 in a cup.
7:15 bedtime bottle 7-8 oz

One thing I did notice is that lately, he;s become a bit picky about what he will eat - so I have kind of caved to that (he will eat grapes, loves them, but not broccoli, so I find myself giving him lots of grapes...cut up, of course!) but I figure I always offer healthy choices, some more so than others, and for me right now, I'd rather he gets enough food!

Not sure if this is helpful or not - maybe try giving your DD some new things, could she be tired of something? Or, just let her have a streak of eating the thing she likes best a few meals in a row to see if getting the calories in there helps her sleep more?

Waking could be so many things at that age...has she started walking?

HTH....and good luck!!!

Hi, some days solids and bottle work fine in the highchair, others not so much.
Every morning & evening bottle, usually about 8oz formula, is given in my (or her Dad) lap.  Lunch and dinner bottles are served with the meal (not everyone does this) and they are 4 oz bottles.  Some days she'll eat half her oatmeal, ask for the bottle by pointing at it, drink that then still finish her oatmeal.  Then other days she'll eat all her solids and not want the bottle unless/until I bring her back to the couch to drink it on my lap.

My question to the board is... we introduced a sippy awhile back and she does great with it.  Especially now that we do snacks she'll drink out of it just fine, even hold it herself.  WELL... she now has this habit that when she's done drinking she'll fill her mouth with water and then open her mouth just wide enough that the water spills out over her lips.  She must like the feeling of it or maybe its her new game, but if left alone with a sippy she soaks herself everytime and its not because the sippy leaks or she doesn't know what she's doing.  Any ideas how to stop that before we add milk to the sippy???

My other question is... Is there a link on this board to show what amount of protein/veg/fruit a LO should get as they transition off of formula to milk?  I don't intend to do that until 12 months, but I'm worried we're behind in introducing non puree foods - finger foods usually only come in during snack time - and although LO seems to "chew" just fine, even bite OK, she only has 2 bottom teeth and I think that slowed me down in my original plan to have her eating grilled cheese sooner than later.  If I can get a good idea of what her nutrition should look like at 12 months I can work to get her used to those foods now   ;)

Thanks!!

rosie has only ever had milk from a sippy, i still breastfeed her twice a day but never introduced a bottle, we just went straight from boob to bottle for the snacktime milks.  She sits in the lounge with her sippy and a biscuit.

Rosie does the water everywhere thing, but when it's time for milk she doesn't mess around, there's very rarely any spillage at all. I think she takes her milk more seriously than water or juice!

rosie only has the two bottom teeth as well and I think it's hampering her on the solids front because there's so much she can't quite eat yet. lots of people seem to have their LOs on things like pieces of fruit etc, but unless it's really squishy rosie can't eat it because she can't take a bite, which is frustrating. She really wants to feed herself more but can't bite properly yet.

she also seems to be going through a bit of a picky stage and is really not into eating vegetables 9other than cooked carrot) as finger foods, she'd much prefer pieces of toast (but won't eat mini sandwiches or untoasted bread as of last week) or baby biscuits. I think there's possibly some action on the rest of the teeth so it might be that she's seeking out foods which feel good on her gums??

GvackM that's so funny you mentioned the water spilling out of the mouth... my dd just started doing this about 3 days ago... and I notice that my dd is only a couple of days older than yours!  How funny, it must be developmental at a particular age  ???  I don't know what to do about it either, so I don't do anything in the hope she'll just stop one day.  I think maybe she likes the way it feels and it's different or something, who knows with these crazy babies  :P

Thanks everyone for your help, I went to the store last night to get lots of different foods so I'm going to try some new things over the next few days and see if I can get her eating more.  Also I cut down her two middle bottles by half, so I think in a couple of days she might notice that she's hungrier  :-\
