Layla, My eldest stopped napping in his bed about 9mo ago & would nap in bed with me or out watching TV, but it never translated to him wanting it for bedtime... just as when he was younger he only ever had a Dummy for naps & didn't want it for bedtime... I think they get to know the difference & sometimes they need that extra comfort as they get older & they notice more & get more interested/stressed by what is going on around them, still need the nap, but can't shut off the world on their own to relax KWIM

Sounds great. I need to lie down with Iona when she's really wired sometimes.

great to hear you found a solution Layla.

I know cole needs to nap, as he does at school.  but he'll only nap for us if he crashes in the car.  I even tried quiet time on the couch with me this last weekend, he was having none of it.  I too would be fine with no nap, if he wouldn't fall asleep at the drop of a hat in the car when we go out somewhere ::)
And by then it's late, and he's so tired that he's hard to wake ::)  and then we have late bedtime ::)

ahhhh, i can't believe i'm saying this, but part of me can't wait until the whole nap thing is DONE. i have stressed about this for 2.5 years and it's gotten me nowhere!

I don't think you have anything to worry about.... Catherine sounds like the child that will continue on sleeping until she is 5 ;D

Ok.... can I just say that a small miracle happened today. She was very restless & kept getting up so I gave her the option of sleeping with me in my bed or in her cot. So she said her cot. I put her in there, left & she was QUIET!!!! Not asleep but not screaming to get out either! Maybe I smell or something :-\ :-X

I can't stop pinching myself... could it be that she is going back to the cot for naps :o ;D :o ;D

I just checked & she's asleep!!! Yay!!!

I promise this is the last post on my dd's naps :P

woo hoo! (and don't feel that has to be the last post - i am sure this journey has helped many moms who might have totally abandoned the nap).  when kids are making the transition to nop nap it can be very back and forth and gradual over a year even (even more for my 4yo who is back to napping more days than not - insert anti jinx dance here ;))

Doesn't need to be!  You offer so much support here, the least we can do is try to offer some back to you  ;D

My 7 yo still naps on the weekends  :).  Both of mine napped up until kindergarten (where they don't nap anymore - they do have quiet time but no naps).  And ds (30mo) will nap up to 3 hrs on the weekends w/o it hurting his nightime.

For those of you that REALLY still need/want your lo's to nap at this age, I might add that I think the reason mine have napped for so long is because I work and they have to be up in the am to get ready to go.  So you could start waking them a little earlier in the am and leaving the bedtime the same.

Thanks everyone for letting me have a post of my own & go on & on about it :). Thanks for helping me get this sorted.

LOL Jennifer... she already wakes at 6am. I can't imagine waking her up any earlier :P ;D

Hey Layla, Glad things have been getting a little better. I am pleased you feel less stressed about it as well. Silly how our LO's sleeping habits get so important to us. I know though if Henry does not sleep well, he is grumpy - like another male int the house I know ::) ::) Therefor his sleep is importnat to me. But when I let myself stress bout it, I wonder whether it is worth it.

In any case, off topic, have you found a new home yet to rent?

Love
DI

Layla, I don't know why but I was thinking about you & Isabella's sleep today & about something I had noticed with my 2yo... I think they are at the age that if you "let go" of a bit of control & let them have control they actually end up learning about themselves & realise that hey they are sleepy. Certainly found that in the last month when I have let mine nap when he chooses (any time from 11am to 2pm start) he is actually asking to go to bed too.
