Yup, it is now 9am here and he had the Rice Milk for 8am.  He drank it all, so at least the taste difference doesn't bug him. So far so good!

Yeah, my ped totally made me mad.  All he said was, "He'll grow out of it."  Well my son is almost a year and he still has these symptoms full force.  The ped thought once summer hit the eczema would go away, he figured it was due to dry weather.  Said the same thing about his congestion, said it was "dry weather" and to use a humidifier.  I told the ped that his eczema isn't so bad right now (right now as when I had the appointment) because I have been using the steroid cream for a month, which helps to "tone down" the eczema, but doesn't rid it completely.

Then when I told him about my son throwing up 10 times in a row 2 hours after he eats anything with Oats, Oat bran, or barley and their derivatives, and he is extremely lethargic and he has diarrhea and is pale and clammy he said, "He's just got a sensitive tummy, he'll grow out of it, try again in about a month."  Well, I accidentally fed him some oat bran in some mixture of baby food 3 months later and my son had the same reaction.  Now he's on a restricted diet on advice from my GP.  And here I thought specialists knew more... :)

Are you giving him wheat?  If he is that sensitive to gluten in oats, barley, then I would think he would be the same with wheat.

Just wondering, because that could be the root of his problems.  Celia Disease/ Gluten intolerance causes all sorts of issues, one being eczema.

Hmm, no I haven't tried wheat.  Can you get that in cereal form?  I'll give it a try.

No, I was saying have you tried wheat.  Personally with his history, I would not.

BUT.....  Wheat flour is in all types of foods.  finger foods, snacks, crackers, bread, pasta, etc.

What foods are you giving him?

Oh, I see.  I am currently only giving him straight veggies, fruit, and meat, because my doctor is trying to restrict him from getting anything he might be allergic to while we try the different milks to see if anything changes.  However I do remember giving him those Farley cookies, I looked them up and they contain Wheat, he never threw up on those or had any other adverse reaction.

That is good.  Sounds like that may not be a problem then.

Chiming in on your comments about the doctors Melanie.  I have to laugh too at what they say.  I think that is all well and good and maybe they will grow out of it, but in the meantime we are living in our own private HELL and puzzling through on our own.  That is the part that gets me the most.  If one of these doctors actually lived 24 hours 7 days a week in our shoes, I would hope for more support and sympathy.  My Thomas used to rub his chest and tummy all day.  He would lay on the floor and push up against the couch.  Cry all day long.  Throw up 20 times (that I knew of) a day and I got the old "It's hot, he's fine, he's teething, blah blah blah.  I know I sound angry and I still am.   I mourned the loss of my happy, healthy baby that they seemed not to care a bit about.  Anyway, life goes on and I lived and learned to fight for everything I feel.  Moms know best (and dads too).

Couldn't agree with you more.  Your poor little boy, can't imagine being in such discomfort all day like that.

Had a question regarding the Rice Protein.  Could it cause upset stomach?  The reason I ask is this, Thursday morning I started on the rice milk with coconut milk, left out the rice protein for that day as it was so expensive and I wanted to make sure he took to the rice milk first.  Thursday night was fine.  Friday I started the rice protein and since then he's started refusing the bottle, and in the evening when he usually was waking to eat he now wakes screaming and crying really badly.  He won't drink anything during the night, gets mad, screams, cries as he swats the bottle away.  Eventually I calm him enough to go back to sleep.  Friday, Sat, and tonight he refused his 7:30pm bottle.  I'm just wondering if he's experiencing pain at all?  I'm not sure.  All day today I didn't give him any Rice Protein, I will see if he'll wake up lots tonight or not.

The rice protein can be a little chackey (s/p).  It may just taste like crap to him and that is why he is swatting the bottle away.  Then he is crying because he is so hungry.

Zach never had a problem with it, but I added the strawberry nesquick to every cup of it to cover up that taste.

I would deft. just try it without and just make sure he is getting protein elsewhere.

I am still in shock though that they can't get you a prescription for a hypoallergenic baby formula.  Is there anyway you can push for that?

Hugs to you, Wendy

Well I was wondering about that actually.  I was wondering if there is any point to getting that special formula now considering he is going to be 1 in one month.  Isn't 12 months when we usually switch them off of formula and onto cow's milk?  Or is it at a later time we do that?  If so I might ask my GP when I go in 2 weeks.  The pediatrician wouldn't do it, but I never though to ask the GP, and my GP is the one who actually thought it was an allergic reaction to the formula in the first place.  I'm so confused! Ahhh! lol

The normal age is 1 yrs old to cows milk, but some lo's stay on formula up until 2 if need be.

You may be right though, unless he is not gaining weight well, then I would just stick with the rice milk plan.  If he is not gaining weight or seems sick a lot, then I would deft. ask for the formula.

Sounds good.  Well last night went better, he didn't wake up screaming and crying.  In fact he didn't wake at all and slept straight through the night.  I am finding since I switched to the rice milk he is lasting longer between feeds as well, I think it is because of the high fat in the coconut milk.  So hopefully things will continue to get better.  I was looking at my baby food jars and one large jar of peas has 10g of protein, which is really awesome.  I'm going to start giving him higher protein food since he won't be getting it in his milk.

I know with Thomas that he pretty much stopped taking all bottles around 9-9 1/2 months.  Everytime he would see the thing, he would take off crawling fast.  I started using different cups and making smoothies which worked for a while.  I would mix some formula, fruit, milk (we still did not know that he was intolerant at this time) and yogurt and put them in a cup.  I could adjust as needed for nutrition.  It worked for a short time and then he became suspicious of any cups with straws or mixed drinks of any sorts.  He still does not trust things he can't see through and he says "I wanna see I wanna see" and I have to show him the liquid without the lid and then he tastes it.  we tried several trials of Neocate and Neocate splash as well as Elecare.  He just would not even try more than a sip and then I had to throw that cup away because in his mind it was tainted.  I just added fat and protein elsewhere in his diet and he has been happy and healty since.  I worry and give him vitamins daily and wish he would consistently take a calcium supplement and protein supplement, but he doesn't for now and seems OK.

How the heck did I miss this post? Thanks for starting it :-*

Ds is on rice milk for an unpleasant reaction to cows and goats' milk. The main things I do are a tsp of cod liver oil in the morning (mixes in well with his milk) and ground flax seed in his Weetabix/porridge. Also, he eats a lot of oily fish, and, if it's something like tinned salmon or tuna (his fave sandwiches), I'll drain them quite dry, then get them moist again with Hemp Oil - it has a 3:1 balance of Omega 6:Omega 3 oils, which is what's needed. (I once read an article on the fact that, since the media latched onto Omega 3s, we've lost the balance of the Omega 6s, so I keep that in mind).

I wish I could get him into avocados, but even I find them grim, so I can't blame him ;)

I'll be lurking here for tips :)
Caroline :)
