calling mspi mummy's. Need some eyes please
« on: November 12, 2011, 20:16:05 pm »
i think dd is following the mspi route. Basic story- things were ok, baby quite small but grew a bit, not enough to go through the night without a feed. We introduced a milk formula feed at 8 weeks and things went downhill from there. The nights got worse, and we started getting a lot of squirming after feeds and mucus in poo. So we switched to soy formula, and have stopped bf'ing. After an initial improvement, after 10 days things are looking dodgy. Night wakings not for hunger- sometimes 7 times a night. Constipation too (unusual i know, but same happened with ds) and quite a bit of mini spit ups maybe 30 times a day only a couple of ml's at a time, sometimes more. These are all very similar things that happened with ds, but once we switched to soy it was like a different baby within one day. This is not happening with dd. Do you think we need to go to nutramigen?

I would definitely request a trial on an elemental formula - only way to be sure.

Agree.  Some babies with milk protein intolerance can also be intolerant to soy, so best to exclude from diet & see if it makes a difference.

I agree with the two previous posts at 4 months though you might struggle with nutramigen its foul and can often be rejected if your in the uk you can request Aptimil pepti which is still a perscription only milk but is better accepted by older babys

My Sophina Soya made a huge difference, Alyssa soya doesnt agree with her either

See if you can try Aptamil Pepti 1 first - it's quite palatable and my MPI DS has been fine on it. You will have to get it on prescription though!

I agree that soya isn't working for your LO. I have never given it to DS because I have soya intolerance.

Hope things improve soon  :-*

Soya actually isnt reccomended in the UK anymore for a couple of reasons...

1. soya often sits hand in hand with dairy intollerence
2. Soya contains oestrogen which they do not know the effect it can have on a growing baby, although for female babies it is unlikly to make anything too adverse it is thought to possibly hamper development in male babies if given over a period of time
but all in all they don't risk it for either sex

that was an intresting tidbit my pead shared lol

we are already on soy prescription. So thats no problem. I just worry so much that they will say its my bad routine thats causing all the nw's. Tbh she sleeps well in the day, has good a times, and is feeding approx 3.5h through the day. Could it just be me or do you think its likely to be the milk?

Why don't you post your routine and also the times of the NWs and how you deal with them and maybe we can see if it sounds more milk related or more routine related.

we are on just about 3.5hr easy. With e after naps. So e at 7.30, 11.00, 2.30 and then half feed at 530 with the rest at 7. Sometimes she takes a long nap independantly other times its 40 mins, but i'm not too concerned because its the right age for short naps. Bedtime routine is bath bottle story and bed by about 730. At 4 weeks old she was sleeping til about midnight from this feed. Now she is wakin at 4 hours after bedtime. She cannot be settled by  shh pat or cuddles. She squirms around and pulls up her knees. And cries hard. If i feed her she sometimes takes about 4oz which is a full feed for her. After that she'll settle, and then wakes after another 2 hours. I always try to settle in the cot with the paci. If she wakes after 2 hours again, she's obviously not hungry. If i offer a bottle she takes a few ml's and then starts crying again. After a long time of cuddles and me getting more upset, she'll eventually knock herself out again. If i try and put her down before her breathing is completely silent she will wake again within 5 mins. Sometimes there is spit.up on the sheet.

My DS is both MSPI and reflux and her behavior definitely sounds suspect. The knees up and squirming sound like pain for sure and it isn't unusual for nights to be worse..especially as it is the one time they lay down for sleep right after eating. The knees up seem like she has tummy trouble whether gas or digestion issues or both...which can cause reflux/spit up issues. I'd look into trying something other than soy as an alternative and or try keeping her upright after she eats before bed for 20 our so minutes, elevate crib mattress and other reflux aides and see if that helps. Then you can talk to your ped. My son need reflux meds in addition to the different formula before  he improved

Lili I would def try another formula and see.  My DS was like yours and a completely different babe within a day so I'm sure you'd see a difference quite quickly with her if that was the case.  Nutramigen is pretty foul though....  Are you just seeing a GP or do you have a paed?

Perhaps ask him if you could trial something else then?

We have some nutramigen "AA lipil". I hope this is the right one. The pharmacist seemed a bit confused. She likes it, so thats a bonus. After an initial fussiness at the taste, within 5 mins she was drinking it down. Please indulge me in the answers to a couple of questions I have when you have time.

1. Should I see a difference in her behaviour immediately? I ask this because on the first night, after 2 feeds of it, she slept til 3am....which has been unheard of. Last night (the 2nd day) she slept til 12.30, and then til 4.30. There was a little sqirming last night but I think it was wind after the eating

2. Is she likely to be more hungry? There are a number of factors here that make me ask this... She's seeming able to take 6oz from a bottle. She woke 2x last night hungry...obviously hungry, and guzzled the bottles quickly, and went back to sleep. She's put herself on a 4hr EASY.

3. The formula is amino acid based, does this mean she will digest it more quickly? Do i now expect to be up in the night feeding more often

4. With regard to weaning....if this works (please god i do hope so) then can I still start to wean to solid foods at 6 months, just avoiding milk/soy products?

5. The label says to expect strange (and loose) poos. She hasnt yet had one since the switch. I guess she's just digesting. After the constipation issues last week, I'm a bit concerned that she's not been yet. Last poo was monday afternoon.

Thanks
