Help with set nap times
« on: January 15, 2013, 16:26:01 pm »
I will try to make this quick. C has sttn since 1.5 months -6 months with 12 hr nights. At 6 months with dropping CN things got wonky then good then 2 months ago we started getting ew and cot parties etc so I have been chasing a times all over the map leading me to have my anxiety go crazy. After much though my husband and I thought it would be best to do set nap times and see how we go. We started on Friday and I feel amazing. Probably cuz it's working ;)
My goal is 11 hr night so we went with a routine of
W630
S 930 (waking her at 1130 if she isn't up usually sleeps till 1115/1130)
S 230 (wake at 330)
Bed 730
So I realized she prob needs to go down at 715 as we twice have had a 530  cry out but ss. We are getting between 10.5/11hr nights and I try to keep her in her crib till 630 - usually happy waker.
Yesterday we had a doc appt that of course doc was running behind for so her pm nap was 250-350 in car. Well she slept 730-710!! So now I'm wondering what to do about naps for today. It's almost nap time now and she in no way is ready. What do I do? Push things back an hour? She was waking at 615 and quiet babbling till 630 so I  thought I would aim for as close to 1030 this morning. Just wondering how I go about this. Don't want to mess up a good thing ;)
Also I set my alarm for 730 am and won't let her sleep past that.

Sorry you got missed hon. What did u do? I don't have btdt experience of set naps but from what I've read on boards the idea is to stick to the set times as much as possible give or take 10-15 mins to give los body clock best chance to settle...hth

I ended up pushing nap to 1030 and woke her at noon.

She woke up screaming at 630 this morning. Very rare. Just saw that the top teeth looki like they are coming through.

If anyone else has help with set naps that would be great.  She is an ew so we are finally getting away from the 5/530 thing.

I just think that if she wakes at 7 she is in no way ready for a 930 nap. Yk?

Teething always cause EW here :/

Wrt to set naps I think u just need to stick with them regardless of wu, a times...that's the whole point so u don't worry about all that and just stick it out..it can take a week or more for Los to adjust...

Ok. So even if she sleeps till 7 put her down at 930?

I really think our ew crib parties were from too short a before bed so in this process I have learned that :)
She just woke after an hour am nap. Normally it's 2 hrs. She was just screaming. I gave meds before too. Poor thing.

The bottom 2 came in so easy. I knew it was too good to be true ;)

I have no experience with set naps as well, but I thought that this thread would give you lots of info: Set naps for a 5 month old - has anyone gone down this route?
Good luck!

Thanks! I have been following along that thread too. Helpful to see how it's going.

She is 9.5 months but was born at 36 weeks rather than 40 weeks.

I guess my only question is if her nights continue to lengthen do I move that 930 nap back or keep it?

Hi there, we were doing really similar nap times up until 9 months.  My LO always woke between 5:30-6am but once we were on set naps she started sleeping til 6-6:30 and we get the odd 7am start.  Unless she's sick or something, I get her up at 7am.  I haven't had an issues with her morning nap if she sleeps in til 7.

Around 9 months she started catnapping the morning nap so we moved it to 10am.  I let her sleep up to 11:30am and then put her down for afternoon nap at 2:30pm or a little later.  She often takes a while to fall asleep at this nap and the latest I let her sleep is 4:15pm.  Bedtime is 7pm.

HTH - set naps have worked really well for us but I know it's not for everyone.  Sounds like it's really going to suit your LO.  I would keep at the same times until she consistently (most days out of a week) catnaps one of the naps.

Hope I am not butting in charjanemom, but we have been going through similar problems for the past few months and I have decided to do set naps myself. I hope it will help because I am exhausted by now! My only question is, how does LO not get OT for morning nap if he is waking at the moment at 6-630? 6-10 is really too long of an A for us. i know that in time his body clock will get used to it but what about in the beginning? i will get 30 min naps for sure! should i just get him up or lave him in hopes he resettles?  obviously with this plan he will be completely OT by the end of the day. how long does it usually take to get a bit better?
I think my LO is getting sick (AGAIN!!) so I will have to go for it in a few days. Good luck!!!

I suspect you'll have to push it back else you'll get nap refusal as she won't be tired.

Maya, it really depends on your bub - I know with mine when she's OT she will sleep longer but if you think your LO will not cope maybe try increasing the "clock time" gradually.  Another line of thinking is that your LO is already OT from the inconsistency so what's another couple of days while you get their body clock in line...

In the beginning yes you'll get some OT naps. Hopefully he will resettle, if you try set naps for a week and you're getting toooo many OT naps then you might have to adjust the times a bit. The important thing with set naps though is that you give them a chance rather than tweaking A times all the time - cuz then they're not 'set'!

No problem maya. We are all here to help each other out ;)

I am a new person with set naps!! And my happy baby is back! This morning she woke at 7 after a 720 bedtime last night! At 915 we usually do books then nap at 930 I thought she wouldn't be ready but at 915 yawns and eye rub started so we did our wind down and she napped 930-11. Curious to see what happens tomorrow morning as I was always under the impression that if she napped that early we would get ew but I think my dd needed more a as the day went on and I didn't notice.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help ladies. Will report back when needed ;)
