But I have to explain things like: tell him before you do something. Don't just pick him up and change his nappy, explain to him what you're going to do (she looked at me like I was nuts  :?  )

 I was at the grocery store the other day and I picked up a box of cheerios. I held then up to Leah and said. Look honey, mommy is going to buy you some cheerios. Do you want to look at the box? Then I kept talking about what we were doing and going to get. This lady next to me kept staring at me like I was nuts.  :P She's nuts if she never talked to her kids!

Christine-you crack me up.  I talk to Kelsey all day, everywhere, all the time.  Today at Kohl's (surprise, I live there  ), I was telling her how we were going to look for a tie for daddy, but first mommy needs to try the pants on her big butt!  I talked to her in the dressing room, ask her how I look.  Oh, it's quite silly, but she's my best friend!!!!  I talk to her just as I do an adult sometimes.

Heather,  Emily starts walking when I pull her up (cause she can't crawl to anything and also can't pull up).  Otherwise she's stuck!  Tonight she was walking all around the rec room turning around by herself and walking in circles :D

Schae, You'll probably find that going to work and the nanny will work out just fine.  But there'll be a transition period for all of you.

hi ladies!

Birthdays & cake - well, luke's had some pizza crusts & yogurt, so i'll probably make a cake, and give him a cupcake to play with.  if he's anything like jaina, he won't eat it anyway... though he does seem to have quite the sweet tooth, so i don't know....    as far as a party, i think my parents will be here and my sister & BIL, and perhaps a few friends, but we're definitely not throwing a big shindig.  (i feel so guilty for giving birth so close to christmas  )

walking - ha!  not a chance.  though in a major development, luke is butt-scooting much more.  still, if he has too far to go, he'll cry to be carried.  but we're getting there.

meat - luke's favorite is ham.  can't stop shoveling it in!

happy luke news - he's started clapping his hands and shaking his head "NO" this past week.  i think i'm in for it now!!!

JulieG, I did a search on this board for cake recipes (especially in the food allergies forum).  I found a few dairy free cakes, but most used eggs and wheat flour.  And some seemed like A LOT of eggs!  I also checked http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com (has a healthy carrot cake).  My Super Baby Food book didn't seem to offer much.  And her recipe for cheesecake had all kinds of stuff in it!    My recipe I've used for cheescake cupcakes for years is just 16 oz of cream cheese and 1/2 cup of sugar.  I've thought about the flour alternatives, and I know Bob's Red Mill (?) makes a wheat/gluten free baking flour.  I believe they have recipes on their website and on the packages (again with eggs and milk though).  But I haven't tried spelt and I'm not sure if I want to mess around that much and experiement.  I think I'll just stick with my fruit cheesecake for now.

Birthday Celebration: After talking to many of my friends about their LOs first birthdays, we've decided to keep it to just family because it is already so large.  My friends mentioned doing low stress because the party is more a celebration of you surviving the first year than it is for the child because they won't remember anything.  And they said to save the fancy kid parties for when they're older and remember.  If you have older kids at the party, often the 1 yo gets lost in the mayhem and the older children are right there "helping" to open gifts, blow out candles, eat cake, etc.  So they suggested keeping it to adults if we want most of the spotlight to be on Asher.  Plus, I think the more familiar people we have around him, the more he'll enjoy it and not get overwhelmed.  He does really well with our family, even if they are several, but not so good with my friends at the playgroup right now.
That said, we'll have a laid-back lunch on the Saturday after his birthday at our house with all the family.  I'd rather not have to serve a meal, but that is Asher's longest A time so I don't have much of a choice.  DH's birthday is 10 days before Asher's (and our 9th wedding anniversary is 10 days before that  ), so that's why we're not doing the weekend before -- trying not to have everything back to back.

Deb, once Asher started standing alone for a few seconds, he took his first steps shortly after.  I don't think it'll be long by the sound of it!  Your year of travel sounds like a wonderful plan!  We'd love to do that, but I doubt we'd ever have the means.  So do it while you can!!  :D

PJs:  I change Asher into his clothes first thing.  Otherwise, the PJs seem to get very dirty and I don't have enough to have a new set every night.  At least if he gets his clothes dirty (spitup, breakfast, etc), I know they're going into the hamper that night!    Also, if I don't put him in them till after the AM nap, I won't feel like he's worn them long enough to get dirty, KWIM?  Oh, who knew there was so much thought process behind the time to get dressed!

Speaking of PJs, anyone else notice that they don't seem to make all cotton PJs?  Especially sleepers?!  I managed to find a couple thin sets, but once I needed something warmer, it was all polyester!!  I resorted to sweats (80 cotton/20 polyester  :?).  Anyone else so passionate about 100% cotton clothes and bedding?

Schae: 7 years for school??  Wow!!  And I thought I was being a rebel wanting to start Asher at 5, or even 6, for homeschool!    And I think the measles (part of MMR) is at 18 months here??  It's the one that seems to get the most bad reactions.

Speaking of vaccines, my best friend's 3 & 5 yos got chicken pox from Disneyland, just mild cases.  Neither had been vaccinated.  Their 8 yo was vaccinated and just came down with it.    Didn't hear if it was a bad case though.  Ironic.

Heather, Asher didn't learn to stand up from the middle of the floor until he was walking for a good month, month & a half.  I think it's a skill that typically comes after the walking from what my mom was telling me.

Christine, I laughed at your message on my dropshots site.  "You're enjoying warm weather fun while we're enjoying cold weather fun."   That IS our cold weather fun here in AZ!!     The playground is far too hot during the "warm weather".   You could fry an egg on some of that play equipment!    I also have running conversations in the grocery store.  I used to get embarrased when Asher was really young, but I have no shame now.    I get going with the weird faces, sounds, and so on.  Half the store is laughing at me by the end, including Asher!  Whatever I have to do to keep him in that seat!

I get to watch my friend's 13 mo tomorrow morning for a few hours.    She's going on a job interview and doesn't have anyone else.  Wish me luck with TWO babies!  I'm gonna have to feed them both breakfast somehow.  Her LO doesn't take morning naps (She's very AP and has no clue of BW).  Whee!

Hi Ladies,

I am reasonably new to this website and am really interested in joining a chat (my bub David was born Feb 05) - is it encouraged to start new threads - or am I welcome to chat with you.

I have not met many people with bubs around my age and am located in a rural community. Luckily though there is a playgroup starting up in one month which I am really looking forward to taking David.

Thank you for letting me know.

Hi there Melissa - I would think you are more than welcome to join us (I haven't been on that long)

I just have to say that I just LOVE all our avatars at the moment; so many gorgeous happy babes all in one place!

Ciara has started letting go of holding on to things and balancing alone for a second or two then lowering herself carefully down to sit.  It's so sweet to see her look of concentration!  She seems to want to master that before she even thinks about taking a step, although she did love the pushcart we tried at my mum's.  At home we just push a chair around but not much space to go far!

Branwen - I think your plans sound great.  Having someone to help and you getting back to school will really be something to look forward to.  I also had no idea how hard this SAHM thing was going to be.  Some days I feel like I am just here as Ciara's appendage, rather than myself.  But I think the first year must be the hardest (hoping anyway ) At least until the twos I guess  .  As we learn to communicate with each other more every day it does feel better and better.

Vaccinations - Schae I was going to ask a similar thing.  Nice to have you back again!  On Monday we went for our 4th DKTP/Hib shot, (might have different name where you are but it is diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio and Hib) all in one.  She was so brave but when we got home she was starving and ate like two adult size meals for lunch, then slept two hours (already had one hour that morning) and then woke for another huge meal and slept 13 hrs that night.  I woke her at 8am - got a shock as she was motionless on her front - my heart almost stopped! but she was just fast asleep.

Anyone know if this exhaustion might have been a reaction to the shot?  She is eating like a horse these days.  And sleeping well too  :D . She is 21.5 lbs and about 29in.  I was a bit annoyed cos we only got to see a nurse and this is our first checkup since 6 mo.  She hardly asked us anything and didn't look at her ears, teeth, etc and then I was mad at myself for not saying anything at the time.  I just always feel grateful that they are talking English to me and then when I leave I am like - hey, she hardly checked anything!  :(  :x    The MMR here is given at 14 mo by which time we hope to be back in the US so I guess it won't happen then till 18 mo?

Kate

Melissa, feel free to join in :D

Everyone, who brushes their LO's teeth?  So far we've played a little bit with the toothbrush but no paste yet.  And do you just let them swallow the paste?  I bought baby toothpaste and two toothbrushes but Emily ends up dropping them on the floor and I forget to pick them up and then the dog destroys them :x  I've got to buy another one.

Jamie, how do you prepare the ham?  Is it little chunks or pureed?

Us, we're meeting dh for lunch today.  We both look forward to it every Wednesday.  So I just spent 1/2 hour cleaning the ice/snow off the car and reinstalling the carseat.  I haven't driven my car since before Xmas :!: .  Have a great day everyone!  Tarri

Just a quick post before we take off for the orthotist again.

Tarri - Ice and snow, what I wouldn't give for some!  It's 70 here.  We have been brushing Maya's teeth since the first four came in (about three months).  Dh does it in the bath, and he uses the edible paste.

Screaming baby - got to go.

Some days I feel like I am just here as Ciara's appendage, rather than myself.

Kate- you are too funny! This is sooo how I have been feeling lately.  It's just so crazy somedays when what I am worrying about is the fact that my dishwasher is broken or that there are laundry piles in 5 places around the condo. and that Eirwen needs new clothes again  It's just such a contrast to the things I was worrying about a year and a half ago...somedays I feel as if I will loose myself in all of the household logistics, but then I come out of my fog and I wouldn't change a thing.

Eirwen was like that after that shot as well, minus the eating, but the sleeping definitely!!! She was soooo still in her sleep I too freaked out! A couple days after she was better.

Julie- you write so much I can't keep up! :D   I'm not giving Eirwen meat-  I hope that isn't bad.  I mean I don't eat much of it except chicken.  I probably need to be better about introducing it.  I can't handle how many poops Asher has! I think I would die!   Is it because you're not feeding him things like wheat and dairy that would be more constipating??  That might change when he gets more of that stuff into his diet? Maybe?

Deborah- I can't imagine what you have been through with Maya, but I hope we all have been somewhat of a support for you.  I think you must be beyond exhausted with it all, esp docs so far away.  Sending you good vibes and lots of strength!

Heather- you are too funny too! Living at Kohls!  I love Kohls...none really around here but I am on their email list- and definitely enjoy their website lol:  8)

Happy Eirwen News- she has started giving me things.  Yesterday we played "giving mama the block" game over and over and over again  .  She also tries to feed me her crackers and puffs in the high chair.  It is too cute!  She also put the lid on her shape sorter.  I think she might be learning the "letting go" part.

Vaccines: The schedule in SA is 6 wks, 10wks, 14wks for the hib/polio/diptheria etc. After I did some research (after the vaccs  ) I so regretted doing it so young. There is a separate measles vacc at 9 months, then the MMR at 15 months (but we're doing it at 18 mo after some extensive research)

Walking: Did I congratulate all the walkers? If not: CONGRATS! Everyone who sees Luka tells me he'll be walking soon, but I think he'll wait till after his first birthday. He can stand for long periods, and stand up without holding onto anything, but walking... nope! He won't even walk if I hold one hand

Melissa: Hi and WELCOME!! Please feel free to join in and tell us a bit more about yourself and David. :D

Kate: When will you leave the Netherlands? It must be so hard to not be able to speak the language properly..

Teeth Brushing: Haven't done it yet - there's only one tooth  Dh keeps asking, so maybe when at least one more tooth pops through?

Branwen: what do you give as an alternative to meat? Luka used to love lentils. Not since he's tasted meat though.

What do you ladies think of the following shirt on this pic? My mom HATES the shirt
