Took Jake to my parent's and he sat on my lap at dinner. I put banana, pear (canned) and asparagus on my plate where he could reach. He ate a bite of all three and ate a lot of asparagus. The "flower" part off of six sticks. He already knows what he likes. My parents were very amused.

Mom was a little hesitant since we are worried about allergies, and she thinks smooshed up food is easier to digest.  I explained to my mom that he can sit and eat while I do something else rather than my time being used to spoon feed him. She totally agrees with that, and was really into it after seeing him feed himself. It is so cute.  :-*

Regarding the causes of food allergies: I think that we are all getting less healthy as each generation is born. It is no wonder: You have to eat 6 oranges to get the same nutrients as one in 1960. I saw a show on the epigenome, experiments on switches that turn DNA on and off and affect the health of future generations, it was fascinating! I really don't think that we can do much to avoid our children having allergies. JMO

My mum looked after L yesterday for lunch and she was really proud of her little GD picking up bits of food so daintily and hardly spilling anything (she always eats *nicely* when visitors are around  ::).)  As she said, at that age we were still eating mushed up food.

I was very proud!

Oh and here is a pic of L eating lasagne last night - she loved it.  And the last one is of her drinking her milk from her cup (she held it for a few sec's and didn't spill a drop!)

oh, her hair looks a little skanky in these  ;<

Wow, sounds like everyone is doing sooo well!  Alessa I love the pictures!

We are going out to a friend's house for lunch today so will be interesting to see how Katie gets on...  she's still not eating very much but is definitely getting better at picking things up - and yes she sure knows what she likes and what she doesn't  ::)

L is one on Wed  :o and no sign of a haircut yet!!!!

Well, after her eating so well the other day, we seem to be in a fussy phase....doesn't want the things she normally likes (except yoghurt) and just whines for things but I don't know what!!!  The girl can't live on fruit and yoghurt alone!!!

Apologies if everyone's said this already, but I'm just wondering ... how many 'meals' a day are your BLW babes having? (or were they having at around 7 months)?

Anna's taken to waking in the night for milk (and she really is hungry - takes a full feed, both sides) after months and months of sleeping though fine.  She has a BF at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 6.30pm and a DF at 10 ish. But she seems to be taking a bit less milk at each of these than she used to. Partly 'cos she is too distracted if there is ANYTHING else happening at all. But I'm wondering if it is also because she has had solids beforehand.

'Meals' are timed for when she wakes up from naps, so move around a bit but are roughly 10am, 2pm and 5pm. She's happy to try lots of different tastes and seems to eat a bit of most things but it is only a bit. So, I wouldn't have thought that the solids could be stopping her from having enough milk. But I can't think what else the problem could be.  I wondered about a growth spurt but it has been going on for over a week ...

I alternate between worrying that she's not eating enough solids compared to her non-BLW friends (even though I know 'till she's 1 it's just for fun'!!) and worrying that she's not getting enough milk (in the day) and should therefore be eating less :-\  So I wondered if I've gone overboard in trying to squeeze 3 meals into the day ... maybe we should drop down to 2?

Overall, she's a decent size, is alert and seems healthy and happy so I don't think she's missing out on what she needs. I'd just much rather she had it during daylight hours.  :)

Any suggestions?!

Thanks
Cathy

Cathy - we moved from 2 meals a day to 3 meals a day at about 7  months - but Katie really ate very little in the way of solids at that age (and still eats very little...). We also do milk first and solids about 1.5hrs later so that she fills up on milk first - we do milk at 7am, 11:30am, 4:15pm and 6:45pm (ish) and solids at 8:30am, 1pm and 5:30pm (also this is when I eat my breakfast and lunch, so we can eat them together!)

Not sure if that's any help?

I know what you mean about the distraction - I have to hope that Katie finds my necklace or clothes to play with while she is feeding otherwise she is wriggling all over the place...

Hi Cathy - I was going to say the same as Bryony.  I would switch to milk first then solids an hour or so after.  What I find good for nursing Lilly so she is not distracted and so she gets a full nurse, is to nurse her when she wakes from her nap.  that way she is still a little dopey and nurses really well.  I also only nurse her now in her room.  I can't do it in the loungeroom or out and about (though she will take a bottle out - go figure).  I started this as she was so distracted and would bite me  :o. and it really has worked well.  So instead of feeding solids after her nap, nurse her instead and then give solids an hour or so later.  I didnt' have L on 3 meals at 7 months, just 2 - bfast and evening dinner.  But each lo is different.

Hi Cathy, I try to do 3 'meals' a day, each after bottle at least 45mins later.  Breakfast is a bit of a non event lately, just likes to taste banana and chew on a rice cracker.  Lunch is turning out to be the bigger meal, prob cause i put more effort into lunch.  then later in the afternoon ive been doing another snack, fruit, yoghurt type.  Emilio is in bed before our dinner so it just doesnt suit us to have a family dinner.

Is anyone making cheese sauce?  what milk do you use?  formula? a friend (following Annable Karmel) says she says to use regular milk.  Its just we dont have regular milk - dh has soya and i tend not to drink it.  only bits for cooking.  Am i answering my own quesiton here - as in if its on my plate ... and no salt etc ... ??

Hi all,

Back again, we've got relatives staying with us, but we've sent them out for the night.

We had a beautiful service on Sunday, although completely forgot to take any pictures.

Cathy I completely sympathise with you.  Alice has started waking up in the night, we don't feed her, we get her back to sleep but she seems to be hungry.  We started with the BLW yesterday and do two meals about an hour after her milk.  However, she too seems to be taking slightly less in her feeds.  My mother-in-law suggested that she takes enough to satiate herself and then gets bored with it and wants to play, because she is so alert.  Saw the HV today and she suggested going to follow-on formula and seeing how that goes.  She said to try and fill her up on fatty foods during the day, e.g putting butter on her toast and giving her cheese and petit filous, bananas etc.  She said that if I wanted I could give her some baby rice in the evenings to maybe see her through the night.  Will try the follow-on milk tomorrow and see how it goes.

She did really well with her finger food.  She picks it up better than she was a few weeks ago (we had to stop because of her tummy upset and have started again yesterday) and does seem to be mashing wee bits and swallowing them.  So we'll see how she gets on the next few weeks.

If anyone has any suggestions about how to get her to sleep through the night on BLW, I'm all ears (well actually eyes!!  ;))

Pauline - was she sleeping through the night before?  Are you sure it's hunger?
so glad the service went well at the weekend, that must have been a lovely occasion...

It took Meghan two weeks to get back to sleeping through after her cold and she's still waking to eat around 5 am.  I have no idea what that's all about, but I think being sick can mess everything up!

How much milk is she taking, Pauline?  I might consider trying to increase that for now.  I have found with my big kids that complex carbohydrates, like cereals and stuff, actually hold them longer than even fatty foods.  So, maybe she could have a handful of cheerios or something like that before bed?

I am glad to hear Alice is doing well. Jake has something wrong now. :( He vomited twice this morning and is choking a lot I cannot lay him flat...he starts gagging. No solids today. Tried to give him his usual supplements (whey protein and acai juice) and he threw them up.

He also has not had a dirty diaper since Saturday afternoon. Shouldn't he have them more often on solids? On breastmilk only he would go 4-6 days.

Thanks to evryone for their support! 8)
