Just time for a quick post.

Daniel is still under the weather.  His cough seems to be getting worse and now he's starting to sound wheezy. I was going to go to the baby clinic tomorrow to get him weighed so if I can get a dr appointment that fits around his nap time ( ) then I'll get him seen.  I'm guessing there's not much that can be done for him.  But still, I feel better if he gets checked out.
This 'not crawling' thing is just getting funny now!  I keep putting all his toys out of reach lying him down on his tummy and then leaving him to it.  Every time he just looks around at the toys, has a stretch for them and then just rolls over onto his back and amuses himself with fingers, toes, voice etc...  It's like he's saying 'oh well, I can't reach them so I'l just entertain myself thank you very much.  I am trying to see the positive side to this.  He is just so contented even to be on his own with no toy for like 20 mins!   I guess I should hope that this part of his personality remains so when he's a toddler he'll still be hapy to amuse himself.  At times I do find it hard though - it feels a little bit like he doesn't need me.  He just gets on regardless of whether I'm there or not :(   I know that's silly and course he needs me but I just get sad sometimes.  But then I see babies where the poor mum can't leave them for even a second and I feel happy again

Deborah - you said something about posting a picture of a position that the pt told you was good to encourage crawling.  I'm interested!

Branwen - yeah I am a SAHM and that seems to be why I need a little bit of cash to get out and about in the days to amuse myself.  Like you said sometimes that means shopping and spending but I'm trying to be more strict with myself.  My SIL is due her baby in about 1 week.  So in a month or so I should hopefully be able to hook up with her a bit more which will be nice.  (I gave her the BW book and I keep pestering her to read it!  She keeps saying she's not had chance    Let's hope she reads it soon!)  Great news about the 2 teeth.  Yay.

Must dash now.

Well, the dreamfeed continues.  She woke at 8:30 crying hard enough that she had tears, I gave her 2oz and then not a peep all night.  But I'm going to keep up my policy of only giving it if she wakes before 10:30.

hi ladies!  long time no post, but i've been reading along!

Christine -   hope Leah stays healthy.  i don't think whooping cough would have occured to me either.  especially during cold/flu season.

Hazel - i think it's great that Daniel can amuse himself.  i was always so surprised/impressed when jaina could play by herself - sometimes it seemed like hours that she could amuse herself!  as a toddler, that's been very helpful - especially while i was sleep-training luke

Deb - pulling up?!     better watch out!  she'll be chasing alex before long.    btw - love peek a blocks too.  a friend has the peek a balls - they are pretty cool, but i like the blocks better.

Deborah - good luck with your MIL.  if it's any consolation, i won't leave her totally alone with my kids either.  but that's a whole other ball o wax.  stick to your guns & just keep reminding yourself that she will be leaving eventually.

Branwen - teeth!  yay!

Julieb - i have strategically placed gates, so i can block off as much (or as little) as i want.

I also appreciate my BW buddies so much!
i feel the same way.  i love 'chatting' with you all - even more so cause we share such similar parenting philosophies.  i also think it's really cool how we're scattered all over the place.  not just in the US, but all over the globe.  kinda connects everyone a little bit more.  i better stop before i sound too much like a hippie flower child!

ps - i did go ask for more $$$.  they're looking into it.

hope you all have a happy thanksgiving.  for those out of the US, happy Thursday - it's almost the weekend!

Hello, all.  I don't really have much to say, but I wanted to check in with you guys.  Sounds like most are getting along pretty well.  Kelsey has her monthly runny/stuffy nose again, and as someone else said she, too, is wiped out from it.  Yesterday she had 2x 2 hr naps that I had to wake her from.  She's been happy enough, but I can tell she doesn't feel well.

Unfortunately, our Thanksgiving travel plans may be scrapped due to illnesses in my cousin's family-3 of her boys are throwing up, etc.   So, my mom and I are scurring around to make a backup plan.

Happy monthdays to those that have come around.  1 yr is fast approaching for us all.

Branwen-so glad to hear of Eirwen's progress.

Hazel-Kelsey would roll onto her back like that for the longest time, then slowly progressed to her crawl.  It was real slow I'm telling you, like 2 months.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Branwen-just found this thread as I was poking around.  Didn't know if it would help you at all, but as much as I know you, you've probably already researched the mouth sores  :D .

Sorry about that - I took the photo, but never got it downloaded to the computer.  The idea is that with one leg tucked behind, they can naturally go up on that knee when leaning forward from a sitting position.

Maya is so cute!!

JulieB: I was giggling about your questions about Xmas. We pretty much sing the same carols as the Northern hemisphere. lol!

Daniel makes me laugh too. I think it's great the he entertains himself, even if it means he isn't crawling. Too cute!

Hazel, I almost had tears in my eyes the way you were describing Daniel's lack of crawling!      It's amazing, isn't it?  My mom always feels sorry for Asher because I keep his room pitch black with no toys in bed.  She thinks he gets lonely and bored.  I tell her to come by my house at 5:30 am and she can listen to the monitor and hear the one-man-party he's having in his crib, complete with dancing and a DJ (courtesy of Asher's "singing").

I'm busy preparing for turkey day!!  Decided to give three feeds a whirl today since I can't seem to get Asher to nurse before bed.  We'll see!  Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow!

JulieB- I cannot get Leah to take a bottle before bed anymore either. My problem though is then she wakes at 9:30-10 and wants the bottle then.  I have no idea why she won't drink before bed. She just wants to go to sleep I guess.

Leah and I went shopping today in a town about 45 mintues away. She did very well. We left at 8:00 and arrived just before her morning nap. My thought was she could sleep in the stroller at Target. BUT, she thought Target was way to exciting of a place to sleep at.  So she didnt't take her morning nap till 10:00, then it was only a half an hour. We left at 1:30 and she slept on the way home and I was able to take her out of the car and she finished her nap in the crib - 2 hours.  :D Julie B - This made me think of your friend you just talked about. I schedule my events around Leah's naps, not the other way. As I am sure everyone else here does too!!! Some people just have different views I guess. I too hope her next child is touchy or grumpy!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!! I'll be filling my face at my mother's tomorrow.  Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

I wish we had Thanksgiving! I just fancy a feast    Happy Thanksgiving to all of you celebrating.  (Heather, hope you get to celebrate still)

Definitley gonna get Daniel to see a dr today.  His cough is no beter and now he's really wheezing as he breathes.  He is completely off his food (first time ever in his whole life!!!)  Last night we made up an 8oz bottle before bed but he barely even drank an ounce.  Still, he made it through the night and then took 6 oz this morning.  But then didn't want any breakfast.  I am determined not to worry though.  He is usually such a good eater that a lapse like this is not gonna starve him (all 25lb of him :)

Deborah - thanks for the photo.  I can see how that is a good position.  Tried it with Daniel this morning but wouldn't you just know it he just pulled his leg back round so he was sitting up normally

I can hardly believe my little boy is nearly 10 months old.  Where did all that time just go?  Maybe I'm kind of glad he's not yet mobile.  Somehow it makes them still feel like babies doesn't it?  I laugh sometimes imagining him as a 3 year old still lyng there on the floor just playing with his toes (yeah I know - not likely).

Have a great day everyone.  I am enjoying this thread too.  Thanks everyone.

ok - how badly can a cold affect eating??? i know Hazel is saying Daniel is also off his food....

this is the past 24 hours for Liv's solids and i cannot tell if she is just being stubborn (she only wants food she can control these days  )or it is related to her cold (insane amounts of mucos streaming and atch out if she sneezes - doubles the amount!!)
Wed dinner - refused all finger foods offered (pasta, carrots, zucchini, little bit of beef mince) and spoon food offered (avocado - mashed; pumpkin and zucchini puree) finally ate 4 pieces of pear before i gave up
Thurs breakfast - refused solids
Thurs lunch at daycare - ate some cheerios and pears but refused the spoon food (mixed veggies)
Thurs dinner - ate pear pieces and 2 bies of avocado that i snuck in  , ate 1-2 pieces zucchini and 1 small piece of oven baked french fry / chip,  would not let a spoon near her

i have been begging her and she is laughing at me - why woudl she be happy to eat pears and cheerios and nothing else???

we are sticking with the DF until this subsides too - last night she took 4 oz (120ml) and slept until 7-7:15 am   will i ever get her to eat enough during the day?  will i be DF my 1 year old ???  it is driving me insane (i lost it yesterday at dinner and was yelling at her to open her mouth and when she grumbled at me i told her to shut up already   - needless to say it was a very bad day) i am not sure of it was related to my period - i hate usng that and PPD as "excuses" but i can tell certain days that my blood is boiling...

so i am not all negative - positives: she took her first 2 hour nap today in i don't know how long (has to be 2 months at least) and is pullng up on loads of things - so proud of herself!

Happy Thanksgiving to all those in the US :)

Debra, I can't help much on the cold front.  I'd say as long as she's eating or drinking something each feed time not to worry.  Just think of all that fat she's got on her :D

Hazel, I hope the doc can pinpoint Daniel's coughing.  Hope he gets better soon.  Emily started sitting with one leg bent backward about 2 weeks ago on her own.  And twice now she's gone to her tummy in a controlled way from this position.  It started when she was trying to turn in a sitting position to reach toys.

Christine, it's wonderful when they cooperate on an outing!

Heather, good naps are awesome, arent't they?!

Us, last night was our first missed dreamfeed :D  :D  :D She woke crying several times but only for a few seconds and I didn't have to go in her room.  And she started waking this morning at 5:30am (her usual time).  At her dinner I put 3oz of formula in her porridge instead of water so I think that helped.

This morning my poor baby was hurting from constipation.  I picked her up cause she started crying hard and was dancing to the music with her in the living room and she fell asleep on me!  She hasn't done that since 2 months old.  So I put her to bed 1/2 hour early.  Hope she's better when she wakes.

why would she be happy to eat pears and cheerios and nothing else?

cause she's a toddler in training, and alex is secretly giving her lessons.

remember, until she's a year, the bulk of her nutrition is coming from the formula.  she's mainly learning how to eat food, and what the stuff tastes like.  as for quantity, many times when your nose is stuffed up, you can't taste things as well.  if she can't taste it, she may see no point in eating it.

and in the meantime, i think the babies think it's fun to drive us nuts!

Happy turkey day!  we're at my parents for the holiday.  all 4 of us in 1 bedroom... well, 3 of us - luke's in the bathroom (no windows - it's dark!)

Christine, interesting about Leah's bedtime feed refusals as well!  Though the REALLY strange thing with Asher is, he'll happily take a 8 oz bottle of EBM even though he can get it from me faster.  So go figure!  I posted on the BF board again and the two who replied said I should just go ahead and drop that feed, concentrating on the others.      I don't know what I'm gonna do yet.

Hazel, hope you got Daniel in to the doc, the wheezing concerns me as well.  That sounds like it's getting worse instead of better, as it should.  Do you have a humidifier going for him?  May help the breathing.

Deb, hang in there!  Deep breaths, big hugs!!  I definately think food can be affected by colds, it always happens to me!  I also wonder if Olivia just has a picky palate right now.  She's not eating because she doesn't see anything she likes?  I know when Asher started out, there were far more foods he DIDN'T like than those he did.  I felt like he'd be eating pears for every meal!      Still eats one a day.     In the beginning, he only liked the sweet things (and bonus if they were finger food), pears, bananas, sweet potatoes, and peas.  New foods always took at least a few tries.  Still doesn't like avocado or kiwi though.  I always read about offering 15-20 times before they develop a taste for a food.  One trick I learned with Asher is to offer the new food alone at the beginning of the meal.  If I offer it with familiar items, he turns his nose up.  It's like he needs to have a "clean palate."      Try to relax, offer a variety of foods (in hopes of nailing 1 or 2) at each meal, and then try again at the next meal.  I think you're right that Olivia does pick up on your stress and may think of it as a game.  I promise she won't be like this forever!  :D

Asher had a fun day today being the social butterfly.  Takes him a bit to warm up, then it's party, party, party!  I don't know who entertained who more, the family or Asher?    He also had turkey and liked it (just like me!  yum!).  We've been giving him bits of chicken this week as well (liked that as well).  Amazingly took GREAT naps, pretty tuckered out from all the people, I guess.  Had to wake him from both!

I fed him part of our "dinner" for the first time last night -- chicken stir fry.  It was all things he's eaten before, but it was mixed together like ours is.  He didn't know what to think.  I gave it in a bowl on his tray, but he doesn't know how to use a spoon and the rice, small bits of chicken and veggies were hard to pick up.  Occasionaly he'd just pick out something he recognized.  Ended up spoon feeding most of it to him.  When should I start letting him practice eating with a spoon?  What age is normal for them to be able to do that?
