yah--thats what I'm kind of thinking, don't really want 2.5 total naps--whenever we have them---especially too many days is a row--the next night is shorter.

Congrats Stacy- hope it keeps up!

I posted this on another thread, but I'll post it here too:
DH & I are so annoyed b/c Tuesday while we were working my sis & mom totally disregarded our nap schedule!!  They know how he is struggling to get on a 1 nap routine & I specifically wrote out instructions & posted them on the fridge. That if he gets up early & needs a cat-nap give him a 3hr. awake time. If he doesn't take a cat-nap, keep him up no longer than 5hrs.  After his nap, not to keep him up more than 5-5.5hrs. before bedtime. B/C he gets overtired & has a hard time during the night & has NW.  Well, my sis said he woke at 7a, she gave him an AM nap 10am-10:40am (too long- I told her not more than 30mins.).  I called her on my lunch break & she said she would give him a PM nap at 2 since she & my mom were meeting for an appt. at 4.  Well, she ended up not giving him a nap at 2, & their appt. was cancelled so instead of putting him down for a nap they went shopping at the mall!!! It was my mom's idea, & I'm so mad b/c she knew he had been up since 10:40 & knows he does not sleep in the car or stroller!  DH came home at 6:30pm & he had been up for 8 hrs.!!!!! She said to him, oh at least I wore him out so he'll sleep good tonight!! Needless to say, he had a NW at midnight & again at 5am, then slept in till 8:15. Totally screwed up. I of course got home from work so late (almost 10pm) & DH told me the story but it was too late to call her.
My mom & sis are the primary ones who care for DS while we are working, but it's only like 1 day sometimes 2 per week b/c I work part-time. I approached my mom yesterday, but she was annoyed that I was so upset. She has often said to me before that I let the baby's schedule rule my life & I have to be more flexible & he has to learn deal with it. It makes me so mad she has no respect for his sleep! ANd she's not here when he's having NWs!!!!

So yesterday since he woke late 8:15. He skipped AM nap all together. I gave early lunch & tried to put him down at 11:30. He was not having it. So he finally slept from 12:30-2:30pm. Then went to bed at 7pm. So total of 4.5hr. awake time in morn. 2hr. nap & 4.5hr. awake time in afternoon before bed. It worked out well, but If I was not there trying to adjust things- he wouldn't have gotten his 2hr. nap.

Today so far, woke at 7am. And only 20min. AM nap. I'm going to feed lunch soon. Hopefully will have a good nap again.

Jenny, I know you feel, Im back to work now too. I've sort of had to pick nap TIMES as well so there's no confusion. That being said, neither my mother or my DH's mother is good at following the clock. they don't undertsand the difference btwn 10am and 10:10am or how 15min up to long in the afternoon will lead to a shorter nap. Of course the days that they watched him this w/e they had shorter pm naps. My husband is the same way but the last few w/e he has gotten the picture.

I've tried to relax a bit about it though, I figure its' just one day every once and a while. That would annoy me though on the whole nap in stroller at mall though. Noah won't do that either....

;D Yeah Kaleb, good boy for Mummy.  Well done Stacy!  Nice timing for your trip too.  Is he finished with the 16 teeth yet?

Jenny- >:( Grrrr to all Mum's who most of the time do know better than us, but not in these situations!  My Mum just now, finally understands that earlier to bed means later to rise!

So, I thought yesterdays naps seemed to go good yesterday but today I am not so sure.  He woke up last night, not sure how long he was awake because he did not cry and I fell back asleep, and he woke up early again this morning.  Naps are very confusing!

I have been back to work since he was 4mos. & he was on EASY. I always had his EASY routine with times posted on the fridge. He was always pretty much a textbook baby so it wasn't hard to keep with the times.  I would update it every month or so. After 11mos. he really didn't have a set times anymore. I stopped posting a "schedule".  But now that we're in the 2-1 nap transition I think it's important to stick with a routine.  It's kind of hard lately to put down times b/c he wakes anywhere from 6:30-7:30usually. But it depends on the day before & the kind of night he had. Sometimes he'll take the cat-nap, sometimes he won't.  I've been taking Stacy's recommendations & not judging times of naps but judging Awake times. It seems to be working, but again each day is different. I did post a tentative schedule on the refrig. along with the instructions that said:
Sample routine:
6:30/7am Wake
9:30am nap no more than 30mins.
12:30pm Nap
6:45/7pm Bed

So that day he woke at 7. Sis followed my instructions about 3h awake time then nap at 10am
Of course she let him sleep till 10:40. too long.  So of course he was not tired at 12:30. So she gave him lunch & told me on my lunch break she would put him down at 2 (a little more than 3hr. awake time again). But of course he didn't go. And lately he has been having about 4hr. awake time. So since they had an appt. at 4, instead of trying for a 3pm nap they got him dressed & out the door. When the appt. was cancelled instead of coming home, they went to the mall! And since he didn't sleep at all in the afternoon & they gave him dinner at the mall, she should have put him to bed early like 6pm (b/c I have instructions no later than 5hrs. after wake-up is bedtime & it's underlined!). But DH got home at 6:30 & he was still up & overtired!

It was just a bunch of things, & I know it's only 1 day so I shouldn't stress. I told my mom how I felt & I'll tell my sister too. But what annoys me most is that she didn't think it was a big deal that he was up for 8hrs.!!

6:30/7am Wake-Up, Breakfast & Milk
10am- Give a filling snack (fruit, yogurt, cheese/crackers)
11/11:30am- NAP (4.5hr. awake time in morning)
1:30pm- Wake-up (2-2.5hr. nap) & Give lunch.
5pm-Dinner
5:30- Bath then Milk

Dropping back in after a while to ask one quick question - if my lo has woken up 3 days in a row early in the morning (at least an hour) should I be waiting out taking only one nap a bit longer or is that a HUGE sign he's not ready for it yet?  I only ask b/c after yet another stretch of 7 days of refusing the AM nap, we decided to not even try for it (he didn't have early wakings for those 7 days, btw) and just do a 12:30 nap.  All three of those days were followed by early wakings.  The fourth day we did an AM nap which he happily took and no early wake the next day.  The past few days he's back to taking FOREVER to go down for his AM nap and skipping the pm nap.  Ugh! :P

question for you guys...
Last night R went to bed at 6:30 - (he had 1.5 hour nap early) and was asleep by 7...
He didn't wake til 6:30 (or that is when I heard him)

So 5hrs later - 11:30 nap time...he slept only 1 hr!!!!! He has not done this in forever - even if he is was overtired he would at least do 1hr 15 or 20...
He didn't wake up crying or anything (just his usual wake up moans), seemed quite content so I knew I wouldn't be able to get him back to sleep - I did try, but I gave up after 20 minutes - it just wasn't going to happen..
Under tired, overtired?
He was rubbing his eyes and yawnign at 10:30, but I waited til 11:30...

So, he's been up since 12:30 -
I'm not sure he will catnap in the pm (he doesn't sleep in the stroller or car - can u imagine?) and I don't want to fight him or make him sleep for only 15/20 minutes...

So even earlier tonight?  It just seems that we're going earlier and earlier and I don't want this to become a habit...
CAn you please give me some insight?
I could try 6:30 again but that will be 6 hrs A time and he usually does best on 5 (sometimes 5.5)...
What would you do???
Thanks alot guys!

Zaibun---similar here today!!!

yesterday he woke at 6:45 (after playing 4-5am) slept 10-10:20 and then played in crib from 12:45-1:45 and finally fell asleep at 1:45 and we woke him a little after 3pm, so I thought 20min am catnap was too much but today....

Noah was in bed by 6:30pm and asleep at 7pm and woke at 6:30am  ;D
I thought no catnap but he fell asleep at 9:30 while on a walk, which I didn't think he'd do---so I let him sleep 10min until we got home. I thought nap at 12 or so.
So he was in bed for 11:45 and asleep by 12:10 and woke 1hr later. I'm not sure why, but maybe he was overtired? I mean if he wasn't tired enough he would have just played right? So great its 1:15pm and we have until 6:30 at least.  I'm going to try to keep him in his crib until 2pm as long as he is happy or I'll be doing WI/WO

The last time this happened---we ended up going for a 1hr walk at 4pm--he didn't sleep but at least he rested and then bed at 6:30---is this a possibility for you?

Deb -
I took him for a drive for 30 minutes so at least he would rest at around 4:15 or so...ofcourse he yawned the whole way but did not sleep....
I had him in crib at 6:15 - left him at 6:20 after a few lullabyes - he's gotten used to that now after I did it while he was sick ::) - but anyway - he fussed as I left and then started his going to sleep moans - but did not fall asleep until 6:45 or so - so over 6hrs A time.. I hope this doesn't mean a bad night :-\

This is all strange as the previous days he'ld been having 2.25 naps...(well except yesterday)
maybe it's all cumulative and somedays he's just going to nap short? Because he has some good nights and naps it all evens out?

Who knows we might have to do catnap again tomorrow if he wakes super early..

Ahh the saga continues...

Zaibun,
oh yes the saga does continue...
Noah was sleepy looking by 3:45pm----so I'm thinking he was either overtired before his nap or the postman woke him when he knocked on the door (I was downstairs).
We went for a walk and he napped for 10min at 4:30pm---so I'll probably aim for in bed for 6:40, asleep by 7 or so. He's all full of energy now of course--so we'll see.

so I think its either 30min am nap/3hrs awake and 1.5hr pm nap,
....or its no am nap and long nap 4.5/5hrs after waking....
less then 30min in the morning doesn't seem to be working to bring the pm nap forward....

here's hoping for a later then 6am waking....

we had a horrible night - worse in ages - he woke at 11, (after 4hrs) moaned for 10 minutes and went back to sleep - then again at 12:30...but this time he wouldn't go back to sleep - he was up for 2.5 hrs!
Finally asleep at 3, but then awake briefly at 5, and then again at 6:30 (i think as I fell asleep too)...

So - he's had very little sleep the past 24hrs...I'm not sure what is going in...he is teething, and seems to be getting a cold(again)...so maybe that's it?  or just plain overtired...how can he function on so little sleep?

I'm going to try catnap again - if not nap at 11:30 again and hope for the best....

yeah Stacy - I've got to keep remembering that - I can't control every thing lol!

Though R has never had such problems when teething before - maybe these are different..I don't know which ones are coming out to be honest...

Here's praying that he'll nap well - he used to go down fine, now its a struggle - sigh...

Hi there

I think my LO (14mo) is making the switch now. So far she has been great at following the EASY routines but latley (last month) she has been a nightmare with her naps. Her routine is as follows:

7.00 - 7.30 wake and play in cot
8:00 up and dressed
8.30 breakfast then out to groups or friends

11.30 short nap of 1/2 hour but can sometimes go on as long as 1.5 hours - this is new as she has always been a 45 min napper

12:00 or when wakes - lunch

2:00 (this is where her old pm nap used to be for 1-2 hrs)

3:00 milk
5:00 tea
6.30 bath n play, milk, bed (7:00)

OK so what I am finding is that she is konked out by 11:30 - sometimes if she has slept well she will go to lunch without a sleep then sleep after for 1.5 hours but this is rare at the moment so she has a little nap at 11:30 - usually we are heading home  from the morning's activities and get home for 12-12.30 when  she will have her lunch. So up until this point she is usually a happy bunny.

if she has a long morning nap she is eye rubbing at around 2.30-3pm or at around 1.45 to 2.30  if she has a short morning nap. I would normally carry her up to her cot with her comforter and she would lie in bed happy and fall asleep.....not any more! When I put her in her cot now for the afternoon nap she just screams and throws a tantrum - if I leave her she goes into meltdown. I have left her to see if she will settle and it has been 45 mins sometimes before she calms down. this upset me so much that now if she is not happy I take her downstairs again and she has no nap at all in the afternoon.

This means she is existing on 45 mins sleep in the day most days so by the time 6pm comes she is very very tired and miserable which results in biting, throwing and generally destructive behaviour.

She is a good sleeper at night bar teething and illness.

I know its the routine but I am at a loss as to what to do with it and I want to start to get it sorted as my next baby is due in 13 weeks!!

xx
