Well so much for the good bedtime. The night was absolutely awful. Aiden woke up probably 10 times during the night. On one occasion I had to change him as he had soaked through. Not sure why he kept waking, sometimes he would only be back to sleep for 10 minutes, then wake again. I took over part-way through the night and now DH thinks that that was the problem.  ???. He was up at 6 for the day then napped from about 1-2:45. DH woke him at 2:45 for some reason when I told him to wake at 3. He is definitely overtired tonight and I am curious how DH will do. Am really quite frustrated b/c dh now thinks he's the bedtime god and that Aiden's hyperactivity tonight is because I was doing bath and that he should do the whole routine. Nice. I'm not sure whether this stuff is contributing to conflict between dh and I (well I guess it is) but am truly fed. up.

Stacey - i am sure some level of dependency is at play. While dh was away i was way more attentive b/c couldn't face the fight with ds#2 around having to do the whole night and early morning too. A week ago I was sitting outside his door and putting him back in his bed. When he woke during the night, though, I do think we are sometimes quick to go in. However, he often screams and opens his door and is standing at his gate. DH is going to do the whole night tonight to break him of the habit. In fact I told Aiden I had to go to work and that I would see him in the morning and I pretended to leave the house. He was quite sick for the past few nights with a very heavy cough, croup and trouble breathing. He still has his cough but is better now. We will see what the night will bring - not much sleep for me I am supposing as DH and I have to hash some things out tonight and Aiden will likely wake up lots, then I have to leave early in the morning for a class.

LOL you guys! DD sleeps quite well in her stroller or car seat. Not as good/long as at home as she can't turn onto her stomach, but..

Meg - nice to "see" you again but sorry you are having some sleep issues. Will PJ stay happily in his crib even if it takes him a while to fall asleep at night?

Ugh Rina - sorry that happened with Zara but at least you guys all had a nice nap in the process? Hope today went better for you.

Becky - sorry for your bad night. Could there be an medical issues involved with his sleep?

As for us, after surprisingly taking a nap yesterday (falling asleep around 2:20) I tried to wake DD at about 3 but it took until almost 3:15 to get her up. But she still seemed tired (hyper and in a good mood though) and we got her to bed by 8:30 and she was asleep by 8:45 or so. She half woke at 11:45 but think she was just cold so covered her up and she was right back asleep. Then DH woke her up at 6 when he mistakenly dropped something getting ready for work. Luckily she went back to sleep and then woke for the day sometime between 7:20 and 7:40. Will probably try for a nap around 1 and see what happens...

So previously I was going with the flow and letting DS get as much night sleep as possible, offering naps, and not sweating it if they didn't happen.  However, after a few days of no-napping in  row it was clear that he really needs to nap for his mood.  So, this week, I've been shortening his night sleep to 10.5 whether he naps or not, trying to force him into a napping cycle.  I think my results have been a little skewed b/c he is simultaneously adjusting to the time change, but here's our week so far:

Sunday:
8:30 wake  (6 hours A time)
2:30 nap (played for one hour, then slept 90 min from 3:30-5:00)
9:30 bed time (fell right to sleep; I expected partying and playing)

Monday:
8:00 wake (6 hours A time)
2:00 nap attempt (didn't sleep, crabby while in his room)
9:00 bed

Tuesday:
7:30 wake (5.5 hours A time)
1:00 nap (played 20 minutes, slept 90 minute, woke hysterical  ???, took an hour to chill after nap)
9:00 bed

Wednesday:
7:30 wake (5.75 hours A time)
1:15 nap attempt (played 1 hour, climbed out of crib, dismantled child proof knob cover, left room; after being returned to crib slept for 20 minutes--think this nap was foiled by a knock on the front door right after he went down initially)

Thursday:
7:30 wake (5.75 hours A time)
1:15 nap (fell asleep instanty, slept 2.75 hours  :o, when I woke him; should have woken him sooner, but, erm, Mama fell asleep too  :-[)
9:15 bed (surprisingly, fell asleep very quickly)

Friday:
7:45 wake (5.75 hours A time)
1:30 nap (fell asleep after 35 minutes, slept 75 minutes)

Okay, glad I wrote this out here before I forgot any of the days.  Too lazy to keep a proper sleep log.   :-[  We seem to be getting a nap every other day basically, general mood has improved, except that he's pretty crabby when I first wake him.  I hate having to wake him every morning, but worth it to get some naps I think.   :-\

ok, well, I can see that PJ is starting in an overtired cycle again.  It is so hard to judge if they are overtired or dropping a nap, huh?  after waking at 530 this morning it took me 45 min at noon (which would be 6.5 hours awake time!!) to get him to sleep just to have him wakeup 30 min later!! omg he is in a miserable mood.

I just don't know what the he!! is going on here.

Will continue to watch and wait.

Yes, pj does play happily in his crib before bedtime for as long as it takes him to fall asleep. It has take up to 2 hours sometimes - this is with all sleepy signs including yawning during bedtime routine.  He just doesn't want his day to end so he resists it.  Now nap time he won't do it. He will cry usually so I rock him.

We shall see what happens.

Another late nap of 1.5 hrs (with me) yesterday. Late bedtime of about 9pm, but went to sleep fine. Up early due to a mess up with DH and his car pooling for work, so whole family up at 5:30 :P She might have gone back to sleep if Hugh would have, but he wasn't having any of it, which meant I had to get up with him, and she simply followed, but suprisingly parted happily with dummy, so must not have been too tired :)

aisling - that sounds like THE perfect routine. My life would be so different with that! Nonetheless, last night was slightly better for Aiden (after our horrific dozen wake-ups the night before. I think that night was partly because he was sick - he ended up having a few undigested poops yesterday (sorry TMI ::)). That's probably because of his cold - they usually make his stomach go wonky too. Anyway, last night he was asleep for dh by 7:50 (after a 1hr 45 minute nap that day) and only got out of his bed once. He did wake a few times (the third at 4:30 for about 1.5 hrs  :(), but DH managed to get him back to sleep from about 6-7:20 - yipee! Can't remember when he last woke at 7:20. Anyway, he was asking for me during the night and there were a few tears and asking for mommy, but also singing, etc. He is not protesting DH taking over bedtime, though and I am happy not to be doing it now. He had a short nap (50 minutes - I woke him at 3) today and is going to bed now. I really hope that the night goes well.

DD ended up napping today from about 1:20-2:40 (I woke her). Tried to get her to bed at 8:15 but she wasn't falling asleep and then our neighbors stopped by with cake (we just moved in a month ago) and we let her get up and have some milk and cake and then potty, brush teeth again and back in bed at 9:20. It's almost 9:40 now and it's pretty quiet so hopefully she's asleep. I'm sure we'll have a rough night and/or early morning but at least we all had a nice day/evening.

Becky - it really does sound like Aiden might have a physical reason why he's not sleeping well - between the multiple wakes a night and undigested poops - could he have food allergies?

We had a blast! The older 2 girls didn't go to sleep until 1am!  Mr Nello saw the crack of light through my tape job of our pull down blinds at 8:05 and says "Morning Mummy?" Then of course remembered that the kiddies are all here sleeping so got up like a flash.  I'm letting DH sleep more as he was up making sure the girls eventually went to sleep. He is talking their heads off right now and they are all like zombies....lol!  9.5 hour night oh boy.Oh well, I know for sure he will nap today.

Same here Aisling - 9.5 hour night. After finally falling asleep around 9:30, DD cried at 2 or something, then again at 5:40 and then woke a little before 7. Plus she had stripped off her pajama pants and pullup and peed in her crib. So then I had to strip the bedding and put it and her teddy and blanket in the wash. Which led to a mini heart attack while she cried for her teddy and blanket and insisted on watching them the whole time in the washing machine (crying hysterically) and then wouldn't let me dry them.

She'll only be getting a car nap today as we are going shopping - I BADLY need clothes. I've lost 35 pounds and nothing fits me and DH needs work clothes and we were going to take DD to the Disney store at the mall too. But she can get 1 hour or a little more on the way there and sleep in the lot until she wakes up. Then her grandparents are coming at 7-7:15 tonight so DH and I can have a date dinner out.

In addition to the overtiredness, I think part of the problem last night was the milk so late - I think Katet said it once in another thread that it can be hard on their digestive systems so late and we do seem to notice that - on nights she has too much milk much after dinner time she doesn't seem to sleep as well.

Good vibes to us all!

Sounds like you are having quite a party Aisling! Congrats on the weight loss Karen. That's awesome!
We had another bad night last night. Don't know quite how many times he woke (DH is on total night duty) but it was a lot. He was up for the day at 6:20. He is still sick with his cold and now his eyes are all gunky. THis morning his eyes were all purple underneath. I am going to hold off on the milk tonight. we always suspected allergies or sensitivities when he was younger because he was very gassy, had reflux and seemed to have a sensitive stomach. We had him tested but the Dr. said the testing we did was not scientifically validated. Both he and I were completely off dairy, wheat, soy, gluten etc. for a few months, although I didn't see a hige difference. We even had him looked at at the Children's Hospital. They said he was fine and to take him off his reflux meds. So we really don't know. I do know that his tummy would always get bad with teething or colds.
