Thanks Meg and Kelly, I am going to stick to 2 naps again, she is alot happier when she is awake and goes off to bed easily enough, and get some nice restful sleep in the pm.

We ended up with a 2.5 hour naps yesterday which was needed, apparently, b/c he woke up really happy.

But we sort of paid for it as he took an hour off of his night.  It wasn't a bad night sleep - 11.5 hours - but he woke up cranky.  Might have been teeth.  And he woke up at 7 vs 730 which means nap will be earlier - and, well, the whole day will be earlier - and we all know that viscous cycle....

Good luck Corrina

Good luck Maggie - The 10 am hour is still really rough for us.  We are usually out to try to distract but he still rubs his eyes and get a little cranky.  I try hard to offer milk/water/snack but he often refuses at this point.  Then come lunch time he is HUNGRY!  so we are trying to figure it out, too.  I hate to see him tired, but I guess it is to be expected.  I know if I put him down at 10 he would definitely be up in 40 min and it would suck.  We did that for a week.

Hi Meg

If I'm not working I sometimes give Zander his morning snack a little earlier at around 9.30am (breakfast is as soon as he's woken and had his milk).  I think it helps to boost his energy before he starts to get tired mid-morning!

At the same time pj started to change his sleep he really changed around his eating, too.  he refused his bedtime milk in any form (bottle/cup) and has good and bad eating days.  he very hungry for his 3 meals but for some reason won't take much at snacks.  he used to eat 5 mini meals a day.  now it is 3 meals and i try snacks and some days yes some days no.

well he had a 2 hour nap which was great, but i think just like before - sleep is robbing peter to pay paul.  if he is going to sleep 2 hours during the day he just can't sleep over 12 hours at night.  but i am no good at waking him up so i guess i will have to deal with him on the short nap days.

can you tell pj screwed up my shift key?  too hard to make a capital so i am not bothering, sorry.

I think we might finally be there  :o  (for this week at least  ;)).

Zander woke at 6.10am today so I gave him some water and put his aquarium thing on and he went back to sleep until 7am (I just can't stop that early waking even though he's not fed and he goes back to sleep but that's another post!).  I took him for a walk at around 9.30am and he had a snack in his pushchair.  We were home by 10.30am, lunch at 11.45am and he was still playing happily after lunch until he fell over and got upset so I put him down for his nap at 12.15pm and he played for a while and went to sleep at 12.25pm  ;D

Corrina - sounds like Faith and Rachel are going through the same thing.   Rachel has got 2 molars and 2 bottom teeth this weekend and so we are back to 2 naps exactly the same as yours and its working fine at the moment.  I am sure we will be back towards the 1 nap when this pain all stops for them.

Hi new to this post ;D
DDs has started on the transition to 1 nap about 2-3 wks ago.is it normal for them to sleep even longer than b4 when you start the transition.not that i'm complaining of course but for the last three days (when MIL stayed over) shes been waking at 5am, talking to herself for 20-30 mins then going back to sleep until 7.30am.
she normally has a 2 hr nap after lunch (12.30-2.30) and currently goes to bed at 6.30.she used to have a bedtime of 7pm but we moved it earlier for thetime being until she gets used to 1 nap.

What a fool for I've been!  Did I say we finally had this sorted?!  He woke after 40 minutes  >:(  Bless him, he does have a nasty cough and cold and didn't eat very well this lunch time which could both have woken him but the little monkey isn't going back down without a fight (though medicine and cup of milk have been administered to rectify the afore mentioned!) - I shall not be moved into taking him out of his cot early  ;)

Hope Zander feels better soon - did he go back to sleep?

We are trying one nap again. We tried limiting first nap for a few days and it does work - she will still take a second nap. BUT, it makes her SO upset to be woken and she's a royal crank all afternoon then. So my plan for now is to get her as late in the morning as I can without getting her overtired and let her sleep as long as she will and then early bedtime. Today she woke early at 6:10 am - and needed a nap badly by 10:20. She still sleeping now (knock wood) at 12:10 so hopefully she is rested when she wakes. Makes for a long/tough afternoon but seems easier than the other way....

LOL.  Don't feel bad!!  We all get so excited when we think everything is on track!!!

Hope Zander feels better soon.

I'm sure the short nap was from him not feeling well.

Okay, so this has been a bit of a disaster - I know it's only the first day and everything, but Marshall is not having any of it.  The plan was to keep him up until about 11am (usually goes for nap at 9) and he was totally fine until about 10:30 and fell asleep in the car while out running errands (he has not slept in the car for ages - I didn't think he would fall asleep!!!).  Slept in the car for 20 minutes, came home - soooooo cranky.  I tried to give him some luch, but too upset, so gave him a bottle to help with the hunger (we just stopped all bottles except morning and night - a little regression) and tried to put him back down.  Didn't work, so now we're just playing (happily, I must add - at least for now).  It's 12:30 at the moment.

Maybe tomorrow I'll try to only hold him off until about 10am and then do luch when he wakes - I think I may have done too much too fast today.  Also - since he missed his nap yesterday afternoon, he slept for 13 HOURS last night!!!  He was so tired, I put him down at 6pm and he slept until 7!  That's why I thought I might be able to get him to hold off until 11am today.  Oh well.

We'll see how the rest of the afternoon goes ;)  Hope eveyone is doing well (and feeling better - Zander!)

Maggie

Hey Karen (Marisa's Mom).

We are still in the same exact boat.  Zach has taken 2 naps the past 3 days.  At three days both naps in the car (traveling and then out running errands yesterday).  Anyhow that has screwed him up.

I am like you.  He seems tired around 10:30.  Today he fell asleep at 10:30 in the car on the way home from Wal-mart.  I woke him after 30 minutes and he seemed fine.  At 12:45, he was rubbing his eyes to go back to sleep.  He is in his crib now. Still not asleep, but trying.  He keeps laying down and then sitting up and crying.

I just wish I could find a good nap time and be consintent with it, you know.

Like you though if he sleeps 10:30 to whenever (2 hours or so), then by 5:00 is is pure hell.

If you come up with a plan that works, PLEASE let me know.

uhhhh now he is screaming and standing up (video monitor).

Tyler - 17 months.  My very very spirited little boy.  Can't turn your back for a minute.  He is doing the cutest things now!  Loves to eat and climb!

I don't know what is going on with PJ.  He went down last night at 7pm and woke at 820am!  But there were a few wake ups - call outs more like it - from 440-6am so I don't know if he was really sleeping soundly at that time.  I put him down for his nap at 1230.  It was a little earlier than 4.5 hours of awake time, but I didn't want it to get too late in the day - it will mess up his bedtime.

So I guess I really don't know what is going on. Since starting this he has slept mostly 12.5+ hours at night and naps have been anywhere from 1hour 15 min to 2.5 hours.  mostly 1hour 20 min.  I think the shorter naps are obviously due to the fact that he is sleeping so much at night, but I do not/can not wake a sleeping baby.  I know he will be cranky, and it goes against my nature.  So I just try to tweak things a bit to get things timed right.

I personally find it easier to keep him up than to wake him up after a 20 min am cat nap.

Good luck everyone!

I wrote a long message earlier and my little stinker turned the computer off so I had to wait until he was in bed  ::)

Maggie - if you want to do a 20 minute catnap in the morning the thing to do is put your LO down early enough that they don't need longer so although they may be difficult to wake (if they've transitioned into a deep sleep) they're not still tired once they're awake.  If you wait until your LO is really tired they're going to need a longer sleep and won't be happy to be woken after 20 minutes!  If your LO is used to napping at 9am then I would try a 20 minute catnap at 9.30am and a nap after lunch at 12.30pm.  Worked for us for a long time - the 12.30pm nap was always around 2 hours.

Zander did go back to sleep and woke at 3.15pm as I was about to wake him.  I'm not sure how long he took to go back to sleep because I turned the monitor off - I was feeling so uptight listening to him trying to re-settle and if he needs me he makes enough noise for me to hear it without the monitor  ;)

My lo does this most morning at the exact same time frame.  I think they are just transitioning between sleep cycles and there is a specific sleep cycle that occurs right around then (i read it someplace  :-\ :-\)

I agree with you that it is much easier for me to keep my lo awake than to put him down for a 20 minute cat nap, then have to wake him up.

Sometimes, I give my ds a little snack (that has a little sugar such as yogurt with fruit or even graham crackers) mid morning to give him a little energy boost till nap time.

HTH and GOOD LUCK.  We are going through the same transition and it is SOOOO hard!
