Cindy, the level of activity can definately effect the length of nap.

Sorayasmom - thats the way, when dealing with this transition, do anything you can to get them to sleep, worry about AP when things settle down.  It may be that she was too OT to last the extra 2hrs on that 20min nap, if there is a next time, try putting her back sooner.  There is so much experimentation during this transistion, trying to get it right  ;)

Thanks Deb, I was hoping that was the case!  We're going to the local fair today and he'll be in the stroller, so we may be able to last longer than I think!

Sorayasmom, if it's any comfort I clearly remember being TOTALLY overwhelmed by all of the 2 for 1 transition stuff.  It kept me awake at night!  It got much better though.  All of a sudden I realized that I wasn't stressing everything so much and wondered when/how that happened.  You'll get through it.  Then...after this, the next transition is NO NAP!! Wooppeeee!!!!!!

this nap bussinees still keeps me awake at night and we have long completed the transition. It now seems as though we ae only getting 11hr straight nights on 1.5-1.75 naps. yesterday was a 2hr 10min nap----and I had a lovely 5:40 am, instead of 6:30 waking ! aaargh!

Thanks again ladies for the encouragement and advice!  It is really helping me get through this...this is the toughest thing I've come across yet as a new parent  :)

I think we are getting back on track.  She fell asleep by herself last night around 7 and slept through!  I heard a few peeps but never had to go in.  She woke at 6:20 crying, I went in laid her down and gave her the paci and she went back to sleep until 6:40, was up at 6:50.  So I ended up putting her down at 10:00 for am nap and she was asleep by 10:05!!  However, she only slept 40 minutes.  I tried patting her back to sleep and slinging her but neither worked.  So I was wondering is it because she is still a bit OT and after a few days will start sleeping longer or does she need even more A time?  Before this mess I was putting her down at 9:45, so I pushed her back to 10.  Should I push it back to 10:15?  And I had been putting her down 2.75 hours after a good nap.  Does she need more A time in afternoon too?  Since she was fighting the nap so long?  What time should I put her down for pm nap after a 40 minute am nap?

Sorry for all of the questions at once!!  Thanks again for all of your help!!

After a 40min am nap, I would try about 3hrs or so. We were never able to get decent pm naps on a 40min am nap---didn't matter how much A time my sone had, the pm nap was always 40min. this is when we cut to 30min and a 1.5-2hr pm nap about 3hrs later.

Sorayasmom - As she had a good nights sleep she may well of wanted more A time first thing, did she wake in good spirits and seem rested from 40min nap or was she grumpy? thats the only way I could tell with DD.

I think before DD started transition she was doing 3hrs in am, then 3.5hrs then whatever was left before bedtime, so its possible she does need longer.  Really the only way to find out is to try and see what happens.

She woke up rested after her 40 minute am nap, so I will try 3.25 hours A time tomorrow.  I gave her 3.5 A time before pm nap and it took her 45 minutes to fall asleep but she finally did on her own!  And so far she has been asleep 50 minutes! So at least we got through the 40 minute overtired mark!  It feels so good to be back on track!  I wonder how long it will last...

Hello. :D

Haven't had a chance to read all the post that have previously been posted but I thought I'd join, if you don't mind, as my now 17 month old is moving to 1 nap.  Yesterday and today we had one nap days and they went fairly well....a few glitches along the way, but much better than when she tried switching a month or two ago.   5 hours is a lot of A time though so I need a new plan of action on how to handle the day, especially since I watch another baby full time during the day as well who is also switching to one nap....ahhhh  ;) ;D

Previous Routine
6am wake up
9:30/10ish nap for 20/30 minutes
1:30-3 nap
7pm bedtime (ish)

Yesterday
6am wake up
11-12:45 Nap
6pm Bed

Today
HUGE POOP  :-\ ::)  sometime before 6am...not sure as she never makes any noise...doesn't mind being wet or dirty.  :P
11-12 Nap...not good as we had 6 hours of A time and she can barely handle 5 hours....very draining for both of us
6pm past out cold
It's 10pm and I've heard her cry out twice but didn't need me to go in, Praise God.

Hope things continue to go smoothly and her naps lengthen.

Thanks again for letting me join in.

Melissa

Hi Melissa & welcome!

I received excellent advice on this board when go to 5 hour A time.  About 3 hours into it, we have some down time.  Things like going for a walk in the stroller, ride in the car, or just sitting still and reading books.  That helps alot.  Not sure how that will work when watching 2 little ones, but just thought I'd throw that out there, just in case.

When I do this with ds, it makes a big difference and afterwards he's ready to go again!

Cindy

Hey all,

I'm a bit puzzled as to whether or not my ds has been too tired or not tired enough for his nap.

Yesterday:
Woke up at 7:00
spent the morning at the fair and he got to bed late for his nap (1:30! :o) and slept for 1 hour and 45 mins.

slept 11.5 hours last night

today:
woke at 7:10
spent about 1 hour of his A time in the car or a shopping cart while I ran errands.
slept from 12:20 until 1:20

We had a great schedule going until he got a cold and then it went down the tubes as he began to have short naps.

I should also mention he's still getting over the cold and is teething pretty hard.  He's constantly drooling and sticking everything in his mouth.

Any thoughts?
Cindy

Cindy, your ds sounds like my girl. Only, when she doesn't run around like a fool in the morning, she will sleep for 45 minutes before waking. Ugh. An hour and 15 minute nap is actually a good one around here. We've had days when the nap was longer, about an hour and 45 minutes, but those followed nights where she didn't sleep as long, and I usually extended the nap when she woke.

She is also teething and has a cold, maybe that is affecting the naps. She doesn't sleep through the night yet though. She sleeps for about 10 1/2 hours, then nurses and we sleep together for about an hour.

We've been dealing with this transition for a while now, and things are kind of settling down I guess. I hope she starts sleeping through the entire night soon and that the nap lengthens. She's been a short napper from the get go, so I am not overly optimistic.

Does anyone here have an issues with the napping environment and the brightness level? She naps a LOT better when the room is almost pitch black. However, she will be going to day care soon, and the napping area is not very dark. Will she get used to this?

So things still aren't going too well.  She at least isn't over tired and nw/ew.  However, no matter where I place her naps all I can get out of her is 40 minute naps!  She has taken one long nap in 3 days and it was the first day after being OT for 3 days.  I will post the past 3 days of what I have tried and if you have any advice I would really appreciate it!

Tuesday:
7- wake
10- sleep
10:40- wake (tried to get her back to sleep with no success)
2- put her down
2:45 - finally asleep!
4:15- wake
7- put her down
7:30 - asleep

Wednesday-
7- wake
10:15- sleep
10:55- wake
2- put her down
2:10- sleep
2:50- wake, couldn't get her back to sleep in crib but did get her to sleep in sling
3:30- wake
7- put in bed
7:15- sleep

Thursday
7- wake
10- sleep
10:30- I woke her to try something new, but she was very unhappy about this!
1:30 - put in bed
2:10- finally asleep
2:50- wake, could not get her back to sleep in sling or crib
6:15- put in bed
7:40- finally asleep after 10 min of patting, definitely OT!!!

(each morning she woke about 6:20 am, after giving her the paci she would go back to sleep until 6:40, then will play in her crib until 7)

So should I keep trying to extend the pm nap?  Should I just let her take 40 minute naps with a early bedtime and finally one day she will take a long one?  None of the combinations I've tried has worked well, so I don't think I will wake her up anymore ( I am really not a fan of doing that, I would if it worked, but since it didn't help any I don't think I will again).  Just not sure where to go from here!!!

Thanks again!  You ladies are lifesavers!
