i have a question...............
generally, how much activity time do lo have between am nap and pm when shortening the am nap?  for example, how much A time does a 20 minute am nap equal?  i know every kid is different and you have to play with A times and naps times, but what is the general rule of thumb?  what has worked for you?
20 minute nap = ? A time
30 minute nap = ? A time
40 minute nap = ? A time
etc..............
does am naps ever eventually get shorter than 20 minutes?
thanks for your input ladies!!!!

I think most do:

20 min = 2h A
30 min = 2.5-3h A
not sure about the 40 min

I know a few moms have had to do 15 min, and even 10 sometimes  ::)  Silly LOs...who would think a 10 min nap would make much difference!

Happy Birthday Kathleen!

We are officially here!  Adalyn is a bit different than all of yours though.  She just stopped taking the first nap altogether.  So it's like every other day here with one nap, and long night's sleep, and then the next day it's 2.

However, the 2 nap days go horribly wrong.  Today she was yawning and cranky after only a few hrs A time, I waited until she was up for 3 hrs and then to bed for 30min.  Then cranky still until the second nap.  She woke after 55 min!!!  SO tired , she was ready for bed at 4:30.  But, bedtime at 6.

Part of the problem is DH.  He's been taking care of her for the past month.  He lets her sleep as long as she wants for both naps.  So she ended up with 2 naps of an hr + then only like 10-11 hrs at night.  The first day he was finally going to start listening to me by shortening #1, she just played for over an hr in the crib.  But he didn't put her down for a nap to try again until 1:15.  She was up at 6:30 in the morning.  So then she slept for almost 2 hrs, and went to bed later than she should because the nap was so late in the day.

I'm home now, but this 2 crappy nap thing has me wondering if I should just push the one nap at around noon, and an early bed.  What do you all think?

Oh, I guess I should mention her molars are coming in.  You can see the 3 or 4 peaks of white pushing up on the gums.  We can always blame bad sleep on that! ;)

Hi Andrea, your back!

I think by the sounds of it, pushing for one nap might make her overtired...however doing 1 nap every other day indicates that she may be close.

Zara (on top of the teething) has come down with a cold.  She is now on nap #2 and it is not even 12pm, the first nap was over an hour.  Depending on the length of this nap, looks like it may even be a 3 nap day :o.

Ooohhh, this could make daycare on Monday pretty difficult :-\

hmm tough one - we actually never wake zara from naps, so I know I would let lo sleep, but not sure what is your best option.

We ended up with 2 1.5 hr naps today (when I said she was down for #2, she tricked me just by being quiet, she wasn't asleep).

Hoping for a good night and a sleep in (well back to normal time would be enough).

How come I never saw this thread??
Well we are mostly on 1 nap, I am finding it makes bedtime harder when we are on 2 naps.

waking from nap, well I almost never had to do it as he was never great sleeper and is in really bad mood after that. And when  he is been sleeping too long, especially on second nap and I woke him in fear of crappy bedtime we have it anyway

Happy Birthday Kat!! I hope you had a great night.

Well we had a 5.30 am wake up  :( She got out of bed at 6.00 and was in a really good mood. Put her down at 9.15 and intended to wake her at 10.00, but I fel asleep too (I am sooooo tired), I got to her about 10.08, so I reckon she probably had about 45 mins. She was then cranky quite a bit of the next A time (happy when snacking, but easily upset!). She went to sleep again at 1.15 and is there now. Whatever time she wakes, I am going to have her in bed by 6pm!

Glad the storms didn't cause too many problems.

I hope all the LOs teething and with colds feel better soon. We have 3 half molars and 1 bulging in the gum at the moment. They are soooo slow!

Andrea - Sounds like you are close!

we'll offer the first nap and see how it goes.  if we continue with 2 crappy naps, we'll see how we do with one, and an early bed.

then we have a vacation in less than 2 weeks, so I'm sure it'll all get thrown out the window anyway  ;) ::)

Bethany also had awesome naps yesterday - after her seriously OT day on Friday I let her nap as much as she wanted, she took two 2 hr naps!!   :o  And the storm hit us at dinner time, so no biggie as far as sleep goes but having the power go off and on made making dinner for her interesting, LOL!  Anyway, those naps came back to bite me in the tush...she didn't go to sleep until 9:30pm and woke at 7am!  I suppose I can just roll with that, two naps and a short night.  It's just I'm ready for bed at 9:30pm, LOL!  When do I get the Mommy and Daddy time then?  ;) One more option to add to the list of experiments, LOL!  :)

I also don't like to wake her from naps as it makes her CRANKY, but if I don't wake her she'll nap 1.5-2hrs each time, and I'm not sure if she's 100% ready for one nap a day.  She was doing great for a couple of weeks there on just one nap so I was getting spoiled.  :D  Should be interesting to see what today brings!

today was another not bad day.  it went like this
6.20am wake
9.50 nap
10.25 i woke her in the end even tho her sleep was not so good due to coughing and put her down for nap#2 2.5hrs later took her 10Min's to settle to sleep, so...
1.10pm nap
2.25 wake
6.15 bed, passed out like a light, again, I sit here now hoping for no 45min wake up.

I have a question, she only slept 1hr15 for nap#2. I've heard a lot about 1hr15 nap being OT nap, is this just when it falls on 1 nap days or does it now apply to 2 nap days as well?  Not knowing made it tricky to decide on suitable bedtime  ???

Newmum,  I would think that a 1hr15min pm nap would not necessarily be OT on a 35min am nap. Did she wake happy? that may be a better indicator. I would think the A time after a 35min am nap was appropriate, so I wouldn't stress too much.

Stacy, good to hear Kaleb broke the law  ;)

Kathleen, hope you had a nice night out!

after our 1.5hr nap yesterday, that ended st 2pm, he was alseep for 7pm, but woke at 5:55am, WTH?, I was hopeing for 6:30 at the earliest.
dad was in charge today and said he just was not tired all morning, put him down for 12 (a bit late I think, but he doesn't listen to me anyhow), Noah played until 12:30 and then slept til 2:30, was quite happy
in crib for 7pm and I think asleep about 7:20 or so. we'll see what the night and morning brings.

Deb that sounds great!

We tried the 20min nap and then a nap at noon and she was NOT happy all day, waking her just really throws her off, so I'm thinking right now our best bet is to keep two naps and go for a shorter night sleep.  I'll let you know if it works tomorrow, LOL!
