Thanks, I'll try it tomorrow.  I'm nervous but I get nervous whenever I'm fiddling with her day.  ;)

Thanks Deborah.  She fell asleep just before 8 pm.  Later than I expected, but I put her in bed a bit earlier than what I though she needed so she could wind down early in case I was wrong.  Lets see what the night/morning brings.  I'll be happy if she sleeps until 6:30 just to get a better wake up and start with a more appropriate schedule.

Did I mention all of this is rather poinless?  We're going ona trip on Thursday and our plane leaves at 6:30 am, so we'll be at the airport WAY early  ::)

Karin, I think going to 20 is the most sensible step.  Just see how it goes.  It makes sense if she can't do one, and 30 min is too much.

We all get nervous.  I dont know how anyone who doesn't like change can handle motherhood.  I'm sure they'd have to change pretty quickly.

Let us know how it goes tomorrow!

(you're still breastfeeding!!!!  Great job!)

thanks stacy,
I don't know what was up with today,

he has been sleeping quite well, usually about 11-11.25 at night and 2hr+ nap, (for the last few days)

last night slept 11.75hrs or so., woke at 7 and nap at 12:15, but then short nap. I sort of almost think he wasn't tired enough, since he had slept more at night. once agian, I think I'm just overanalyzing.  ::) maybe it was just an off day.

Hi Everyone,

I have a question for everyone.  When you started out, and cut the first nap to 45 minutes, did the pm nap lengthen eventually?  I'm not sure if I'm not expecting too much.

Cindy, ours did not.  I'd say it depends on your schedule though.  If your second nap is good and 1.5 hrs or so, it'll probably stay the same since you just can't fit all the A time they need in the day with 2 long naps.

Perhaps after it's been shortened for a bit, it will lengthen slightly,  But I wouldn't expect it to get more than 1.5 until you shorten it down to 30 or 20 min.

SURPRISE!!!!  Bed just before 8, and woke just after 7!!!  I didn't screw up after all.  She had 2, 1 hr naps yeterday and an 11+ hr night.  Of course I still woke at 5:40 ::).

I guess she was sleep deprived and we didn't have NW yet, but would've.  So yea!!!  Hopefully a normal day today.

Thanks for the response.  A good, long nap for Matthew right now is 1.25 hours.  So I just wonder what it will be like in a few months.  What if it never lengthens?  Every time he changes schedule I get all nervous. ::)

Thanks again!

It will lengthen eventually.  some do it relatively soon, others later.  i'll bet if a long nap is 1.25, it may take a while for yours to lengthen.  It sounds like my dd.  But she did get to 2 hr naps when we shortened it to 20 min for the first one.

You'll get there eventually

babyre, congrats on the later w/u!  how is the rest of your day going?

sami: what do oyu mean changing the A times around for your 1 nap days?  is the morning A time getting longer now that you are consistently on 1 nap?  what did you start at?  are you getting any 2 nap days at all?

so, i am getting into the frustrating zone here!  we had a 1 nap day on friday and 2 nap days sat and today.  each getting very difficult to get down for the pm nap!  ds usually settles within at least 7-10min but today it was 40min!  ok, so i am now thinking i might have to suck it up and offer only 20min in the am for 2 nap days!  my only thing is finding the A time b/w first and second nap!  cause i know 2 hrs is definitely NOT enough.  Now I am wondering how often to offer 1 nap days?!  anyone else at this stage?

Oliver Rowland - I just read your post.  I think we are in a very similiar situation.  :-\

Babyre:  Thanks for the BF kudos.  Today is the 1st day I've actually been really thinking about weaning...  :'(  I think I'm just tired and frustrated though.

Well, I did the 20 min nap this morning.  I tried to put her down at about 1:30 and she completely refused.  :-\  I tried for about 20 mins but when Mimi refuses a nap, there's really nothing I can do about it.  She just won't go to sleep.  So, she doesn't *seem* tired.  She's just playing in the living room....  It's 2pm now.  I'll probably try to get her to go to sleep again at 2:30pm.  If she goes to sleep, how long should I let her sleep for with a 7:30pm bedtime?  I can, of course, fiddle with bedtime too.  I really don't think her nights will get better though until I can get some kind of consistency going. (She's never been one that's good with 'flexibility' IYKWIM...)  If she goes to sleep at 2:30, I think I'll get her up by 4 at the latest.  If I need a later bedtime, we can always just read more books after her bath...

I'm almost thinking about letting her do 1 nap from about 11am-whenever and moving bedtime up.  She doesn't do evenings well though, so that would probably be even worse.  :-\

What about 2 shorter naps of about an hour?  Or is that moving away from our goal?  Then again, if she napped from 11-12, the earliest I'd be able to get her to sleep would probably be 3-4.  So, then that pushes the 2nd nap too late.

This is so frustrating.  >:(  OK, enough rambling from me.  Thanks for all your help everybody!

hi,

we haven't had any two nap days in awhile.  her A times are actually big enough on both sides to still get pushed to one nap.

i am having a hard time pinpointing what her A time level is....we have a kid who is playing herself into too late of a bedtime and then waking early.

after our brilliant wakeup yesterday (and 12hrs sleep) this is what happened:

705 wake
1215-2 nap
in bed at 7
asleep at 815pm!!!  WAY TOO LATE

nw at 450...played for 5/10 min, back to sleep till 6am
6-7 am played in crib, at which point she fell back to sleep
705-750 45min sleep

750am start of day

I am running into this as my problem...if she sleeps 12hrs at night, then nap throws her all off for bedtime as she is just too rested.  So eventhough yesterdays nap was shorter, she still was wide awake.  She was in bed with plenty of time to winddown and she just kept going.  If she was ot, this time in bed trying to sleep would have resulted in crying or just plain ed off....but she is happy and just plays until she is tired.  But we are running into 6/6.25hrs after nap....

Then, when she does sleep...its past her point in the night which results in an early day for us.  I know she'll nap fine today as she had a shorter night.  Probably bedtime will also go ok as she'll actually be tired.

I think i might cut her off at 11.5hr sleep tonight/tomorrow, to see if that results in more normalcy.

This transition is aggravating me because she can handle the one nap....its just finding which way results in a good night every night.  This wishy washy wakeup is driving me mental.

I would love to escape this thread forever....but i won't till we have it down!  LOL, whenever that is?

Think we may have had too much sleep today! She went to bed last night at 6.45 and didn't wake until 7am, yay!! So:

Wake 7am
Nap 1 - 10.00 - 10.40 - not at all happy to be woken, really grumpy until 1pm and was then fine
Nap 2 - 2.00 - 3.45 - I left her as she had seemed so tired earlier.
Bed - 7pm - she was completely ready for bed then too.

I never know when she has actually gone to sleep, the times I have given are when I put her down, but I didn't hear a peep on the monitor after I put her down for either nap, or tonight. I could be ok. if she didn't go straight to sleep.

Whats the average hours sleep at this age? Isabella was doing 16hrs (13 night, 3 day) until all this started a few months ago!!

Also, it's hard to be consistant when her sleeps needs seem to keep going up and down. She seems to want just 1.5-2 hrs day sleep and an 11hr night a lot of the time, and then she'll do a longer night and want more day sleep too. Is that just her catching up a bit as she isn't really ready for only 13hrs?

stacy

i think tomorrow i will wake avery at the earliest 630...if that is 11.5hrs.  it will suck, but i am determined to get her on track.

then i can move on...

i will be happy with 11hrs night and 1.5/2hrs nap if she'll sleep good at night.

i would however, like to aim for 11.5 night and 2 hr nap.  if she'll have it.

it's nap time now and she went down perfectly.  will only have 1.5hrs but, im praying to god she'll be tired and just go the heck to sleep tonight!

argh

lila~ i think avery did the same as your lo...she kinda got big A times and had two shorter naps.  usually 30min and 1.25/1.5.  she slept a solid 12hrs too.  oh, i miss those days.

OliverRowlan, I'll let you know.  I woke her after 30 min for her first nap.  Here's a shocker, I went to changer her diaper after her first nap, lights on, talking, moving her, etc. and SHE FELL ASLEEP on the changing table!  Couldnt' believe this.  I woke her again, and withing half a minute she conked off again!

It's the second nap now, was awake for 3 hrs. I told her it was nap time and she walked to her room and upped her arms to be let in.  First time for that.  So we'll see how long it is and how successful the day was as  a whole.

Sami, on 12 hr nights, can you just give her a lot of stimulation before the first nap.  Spend time out side running, swimming, playing, etc.  Then maybe she'll take the nap a bit more easily.  It makes a big difference in my dd, the activity level she gets.

Lila, I would've been SOOO happt with 16 hrs of sleep.  I dont think I've ever had that except when she was a newborn.  15 hr days were lucky and far between eachother.
