We need to get to the bottom of this pasta issue LOL!

BTW going to make carrot apple chicken "nuggets" today and see how DS likes them at lunch. Happy to post recipe if they go well!

Nathan still eats pasta. He likes small ones like wagon wheels and penne, because they are a perfect size for him

Yesterday, he ate:
B: zuchinni, onion, cheese and mushroom omlette, fresh peach chunks, and a bit of toast
S: goldfish crackers, rest of omlette
L: bits from my flatbread veggie sub and DH's roast beef sub
D: grilled snapper (refused after one bite), buttered baby shell pasta, and green beans

Maybe I need to overcook the pasta more? Since he does like it in soup (super mushy) and lasagna as well? Will keep trying - which shapes do you guys find work best for their little fingers?

We have done baby shells, which are a little too small I think, macaroni, rigatoni, penne (which I slice in half), and wagon wheels. I find that the spagetti, linguini, etc is too slim for Nathan to pick up, even when chopped to a good length. His fave is wagon wheels, but he gets them rarely as I can't find them in whole wheat or even enriched with anything healthy.

OK forget what I said about lasagna - DS just refused that now (lunch) too. Figuring teething and typical age stuff but seems like top front tooth really close.

Oh my god! Have our kids been chatting - just gave DS lasagne for dinner, barely touched it!!

Sorry - but PMSL! There's some sort of pasta conspiracy going on  ;) Will see if DD refuses pasta the next time we have it!

Today:
B: rice crispies & milk, few dry CN cornflakes, innocent smoothie
At CM:
S: raisins, scone, juice
L: chicken noodles, bread, yoghurt, melon, water
S: ice pop, juice
S: sausage roll, water
At home:
D: 2 slices of pizza (one pepperoni, one margherita), bit of mayo for dipping, bit of coleslaw, cherries, fromage frais, milk, biscuit

Khalam's Mama - my DH said the savoury flapjack reminded him of 'cheese straws' - the recipe that every kid made in Home Economics at school  ;) I've posted it before so will just find go find it and pop back.

Here's the savoury flapjack recipe. In the notes I made at the bottom it mentions the use of veg - I've since made it with grated courgette and it was lovely. DD loves it - she calls it 'cheese snack' - but then she is a cheese-aholic

150g rolled oats (I used porridge oats - I *think* they're the same)
150g grated cheddar cheese*
50g butter (I melted this)
2 eggs

Mix all the ingredients together and press down into a baking tin. Bake in oven 180 for 30-40 mins until golden brown. Leave to cool and cut into slices.

When I took it out of the oven I didn't think it had worked as it looked quite 'wet' on the surface, but it set just fine.

*You can use less cheese - and the recipe suggested adding grated veg (carrots, courgette, onion, etc) but our cupboard was bare so I just went for the basic recipe. Will definitely try variations as well as the basic recipe again.

LOL on the pasta conspiracy... Today so far has been:

B: maybe 1/2 Wheatabix in milk, small amount cantaloupe
L: (refused veggie lasagna) yogurt with added veg puree, few bites chicken/apple sausage
S: small piece chewy granola bar (recipe posted in recipe swap)
D: remains to be seen - made him a broccoli potato pancake and will offer the salmon and potato wedges I made for rest of us

Savory flapjacks sound good. Will try them too. I need some carbs in this boy lately.

It is funny amy that you search out wholewheat pasta when in Uk it is not reccommended for toddlers. I love wholwheat but have been getting white for DS. We do the spirals which DS likes but he is also hit and miss but bit like that with complex carbs in general lately.

Today:
B: porridge, fruit salad (strawberries, grapes, 1/2 banana)
L: 1/2 cheese pesto wrap, satsuma, raisins, 1 organix carrot stick
S: more fruit salad
D: 1 large broccoli/oat chicken nugget, few pieces gnocchi in pesto, cherry tomato, yoghurt

Why would whole wheat pasta not be recommended? How do you make the broccoli/oat chicken nuggets?

OK so dinner not good. DS got upset when put in high chair, then let me give him a few bites of the salmon I made (quite lovely) before spitting it out after 4-5 bites. Totally refused the broccoli potato pancake (which he has always loved before). Ate almost a whole small piece of whole wheat raisin toast with cream cheese and now eating strawberries. Sigh.

Wholewheat/brown anything (pasta/rice/bread etc...) is not recommended because it is too filling and can stop LO's eating enough food to get all their calories and more importantly nutrients in with small tummies and also it contains enzymes that stop them absorbing calcium and iron and some other minerals and as they eat such small amounts they need to absorb as much as possible to get their RDA. It is not recomended to move to all white until 5YO.

The chicken nuggets are 3 cut up chicken breasts dipped in 1/2 pureed broccoli tree mixed with one egg and then rolled in 1 slice bread crumbs mixed with equal amount of porridge oats and cooked in oven for 30mins. MMMm. This makes lots - enough for DH, Me, Nana and DS. You can use other veg puree instead if you prefer but I hate broccoli so this is the only way I can eat it.

Interesting with the wholewheat/brown issue. I would have thought the opposite - since they always say that white flour, etc have no real nutritional value? It's all so confusing!

Those nuggets sound quite lovely, thanks - might have to give it a try.

Given that DS has been refusing much lately other than soup, yogurt, applesauce, raisin toast and fruit (and goldfish crackers and the like LOL) - thoughts on what to make that he might eat and be healthy? He did have that piece of granola bar today - would that make a good breakfast? Have rolled oats, flour (half reg, half whole wheat), flaxmeal, brown sugar, raisins, applesauce, honey, egg, canola oil, vanilla and cinnamon in them...

Really hope this is just teething (his gums are a mess) and those teeth break soon...

Huh! That is so interesting about the whole wheat stuff. It is not the case in Canada; the food guide here recommends that at least half of the daily intake of grains be whole grain. Here is the section I found in the Canada food guide notes:

Make at least half of your grain products whole grain each day.

•Eat a variety of whole grains such as barley, brown rice, oats, quinoa and wild rice.
•Enjoy whole grain breads, oatmeal or whole wheat pasta.

It starts at 2 years, though, and I can't seem to find any info on LO's 12-24 months. Nathan does have white pasta about half the time, since wagon wheels are his absolute fave type of pasta. I could mix it with cat food, and he would eat it.

Anyway, today he ate...
B: toast (whole wheat!) with butter, peanut butter, and jam, as well as 1/4 of a plum and 1/4 of a satsuma (and no rash all day!!)
S: refused green beans and cheese, but ate some crumbled granola bar ( ::)) and the same green beans
L: raisins, cheese, cucumber, peas, and corn
S: 1/4 of a gingersnap cookie, 1/4 of a raisin oatmeal cookie, and 1/8 of a chocolate chip cookie
D: huge serving of penne with fresh homemade pesto (had basil and kale and parsley in it), chicken, mushrooms, onions, and red bell peppers

For his cookie 'snack', we were out grocery shopping and the store was PACKED so it was taking forever... stupid Mommy forgot that it is very nearly Canada Day (July 1st). We were taking so long that we weren't home in time for N's snack and he was getting upset, so DH hit the free samples table and got three 1/4 cookies. I objected to the chocolate chip one, so he only got a little bite of that one!

So, meals are a real hit & miss this day, depending pretty much of how's feeding ds :(

So, yesterday was good on solids, bad on bf :(..bf-ing is becoming a real struggle, and if I forget and feed ds, with the lights on or curtains open, well, that's the end of it..!

Here's what he had:

B: a few pieces of omelette & a few bites of croissant with honey
S : a few pieces of apple & a banana
L : Cathy's tuna bake, which was delish :)
S : Grapes, a piece of laughing cow cheese & slice of toast with butter
D : 1 Yogrurt (ate 3/4 of it), a piece of cheese & mangoes

I tried making the flapjakes before, but they turned out too hard, maybe it was the kinf of cheddar cheese?
