new mum- she's never had breakfast before 7am, even with the 4am EWs.  Not sure if she could hold out til 7:30am, as even when she wakes at a decent time, she's still an early riser (~ 6:10-6:20am).

I'm not sure if I screwed up today or not ???

This morning, it only took 15 mins of WI/PD/WO and she was asleep by about 9:20am, but she was very restless, one arm moving around for the next 5 mins or so.  Then she only slept til 9:50am.

This afternoon, she started rubbing her eyes around 12:25pm, and she was lying down in her crib every now and then.  Put her in crib at 1pm, and she remained lying down but didn't fall asleep til 1:20pm.  She slept til 2:27pm, and I didn't do WI/PD/WO to extend- is that screwing up?  I forgot to ask how long a nap is considered a short nap (I assumed less than 1 hour)?  Or do I just keep trying to extend the pm nap, regardless of length?

And at bedtime, she didn't even stand up.  She laid down, and I waited until she was asleep to leave the room.  Should I have left earlier?

Asleep by 6pm last night, she was crying at 8:27pm, and replugged paci- right B2S.  And she woke this morning at...

(drum roll)

6:21am!  She woke crying though, so we're still in OT mode.

When do I start leaving the room prior to her sleeping, or at least move away from her crib?

Leslie, you didn't screw up at all  ;D thats really not a bad days sleep at all.  I probably wouldn't try to extend past an hour nap because ultimately she has gone past 1 sleep cycle and into the next one which is what we want, so thats HUGE!!!!!

What a fantastic night too, I'm so pleased you are getting somewhere  :D

When you start to withdraw from the room is down to you and M really.  I would maybe give it another day to really get her going to sleep unaided set in stone, then start to withdraw.  How quickly or slowly you choose to take this is again down to you.  It totally depends on how M takes it.

new mum- HELP!  We've been at WI/PD/WO for over an hour now, and she's resisting the morning nap!  It's now 10:13am, and she's usually asleep by 9:30am.  Even if she sleeps 30 mins, she'll be up by 11am.  Do I still try for a 1pm nap?

AAAARRRGGGGH...

Thats a tricky one.  Try to get her down asap for a catnap but limit it to 20mins then have her back down 2-2.5hrs later.  Either that or you will have to do 1 nap today and a very early night.

This is why she's never been on a schedule!!!  She resists...just when I think things are improving, she throws me a monkey wrench.

Finally asleep about 10:30am.  I think I'm going to limit the morning nap, as even if she takes a good nap this morning, it's likely she'll be up by 11:30am-11:45am, and I think even a 4:30pm bedtime is going to be too much A time and result in NWs and an EW.

I guess either choice I'm going to regret.

What the heck do I do tomorrow?  Does it depend on her night and wake up time?  And how long do I do WI/PD/WO if she's resisting a nap?

((((SCREAMING))))

Not sure how long she slept this morning, as I had my back to her when she fell asleep, but I suspect about 10:30am, and I woke her about 10:53am.  Then she gave me the same song and dance for the afternoon nap, although WI/PD/WO only took 50 minutes, as opposed to the 1.5 hours this morning.

But she only slept about 52 mins, and I couldn't take any more WI/PD/WO, so I just got her up.

What gives?  She catches up on a bit of sleep, and then doesn't want to nap.  I can't wait until she's in school and there's no more naps!!!!!

Tonight, had her in bed after 3 hours A time post 2nd nap, and she laid down quietly for about 20 mins, then started playing with the rails.  That's when I left- and haven't heard a peep from her.

Hi Leslie, at least you aren't being a slave to her bedtime anymore, she knows you aren't going to entertain her anymore so just put her to bed and leave, do the same for naps unless she cries and then do WIWO. You have had a spectacular improvement already but it will take a bit more time to get everything consistant, I hope she has another post 6am wake up  ;)

Sorry I haven't been on much, L has been really rough with her jabs and teething but I am glad to say all is improving here too  :)

Katt- glad things are improving over there.  Teething is sooooo tough, on all of us!

She slept all night, around 6:10pm (I think) to 6:18am.  Based on yesterday's performance, I was thinking about a nap at 10:30am.  If I do that, should I let her sleep as long as she wants, or limit it to 20 mins or so and then try for an afternoon nap 2.5/3 hours later?

If I let her sleep as long as she wants, do I offer a catnap later?  And if so, how much later?

Sheeeshh this is confusing.

How fantastic!! Two mornings with wake ups after 6am!! And 12+ hours of solid sleep!!
Maybe I should go away more often  ;)

I think you're right that now she is sleeping longer and better at night, she will not need to nap so early in the day. However, I think you still need to be a little cautious when making changes to her routine as too big a change could lead you back down the OT trail.

I would go for offering am nap at 10am (she was on 9:10am before wasn't she?) and limiting to 30 mins (as this is around how long she sleeps for anyway), then offering pm nap after 3 hours A time. I'd give that a go for three days and then tweak.

What do the rest of you think?

P.S. Weekend away was... interesting! 20 of my husband's family in one house and the four of us sharing a room for two nights!!! As I am sure you can imagine, having a sleep sensitive toddler and a 5 month old baby sharing a room was problematic - we are all verrrry tired today!

20 of hubby's friends???  And all 4 of you in the same room???  Sounds like a nightmare!  I never realized you had a 5 month old (I'm so self-absorbed in M's sleep)... how do you do it???

I don't know that 10am would work- today she slept from about 10:30am to 11:38am (YAY, decent nap).  But I mistakenly took the afternoon off (my brother's looking for an apt. and I went to take a look and give my thoughts) and had hubby put M in for a late catnap at 3:30pm.  Explicit instructions were given, and she fell asleep, but only for 10 mins as the wood floors creak and he made some noise leaving her room.  I got home a few mins later, and I didn't think she'd go b2s so I just fed her, and went into bedtime routine.

Think she fell asleep about 5:30pm, but am expecting the worst.

I don't know which is better- short morning nap and long later nap (e.g., yesterday 20ish min am nap around 10:30am, but then only slept 52 mins 3.5 hours later) or a long morning nap and short afternoon catnap (like today, if it wasn't screwed up).

Long morning nap and pm catnap worked for us - as she's done a couple of days of naps at 10:30am it's probably worth continuing with that strategy for a few more days to see how it settles down.

20 of hubby's FAMILY i.e. all my in-laws ;D It was lovely to get to spend time with them but for the second night we had to turf my nephew and his girlfriend out of their room at about midnight so that Amy & I could 'sleep' in there while Ollie & DH 'slept' in our room cos Ollie and Amy kept waking each other up :P

How do you do it with a toddler and a 5 month old? You just do. Simple as that really!! Fortunately Amy is a total angel baby, which makes things MUCH easier  :)

Well last night wasn't bad- asleep at 5:30pm, but awake at 5:48am.  I was going to aim for the nap at 10am, as that's about the A time she's done first thing in the morning.  Should I try to stretch her til 10:30am?  I'm afraid she'll be OT, and only sleep 30 mins then.  If I put her down earlier, then the late catnap will be earlier, maybe by 3pm.  Regardless, how long should I let her sleep for the catnap?

You're brave Momma Holmes- no way would I spend 2 nights with the in-laws (I wouldn't even spend 2 nights with my parents!).  My motto is love them from a distance.  What kind of baby was Ollie?  Does that mean if I had another baby, she/he would be an angel?

Glad you're back!

Hi Leslie
If you need to do a late catnap following a long am nap then I would say 30mins, which is probably all she would do. the time she goes to sleep for pm nap (if long am nap) will depend on what the time of day is.  She will probably only take 30mins any way so I would then work out 3hrs after 30min nap to decide on bedtime.  If this leaves too long a time in pm then you will just have to hope she does more than 30mins for catnap.
